Dear Jason,
It's the most important election you've never heard of, and local GetUp members need your help over the final
two weeks.
A super-strategic effort in a local Tasmanian election is the path to passing a deal to protect Tassie's ancient forests -- and we can make the difference in the final days.
Here's the deal:- After years of negotiation and campaigning (including by GetUp members) there's finally a deal on the table to protect large tracts of Tasmania's ancient forests. It's supported by unions, environmentalists and industry.
- The Tasmanian upper house is the final hurdle - but they're one vote short of passing the deal.
- One local election will decide whether progressive, pro-deal candidates replace the incumbent, who voted against the agreement (and education reform, and Australia's first same-sex marriage laws)!
- But many voters don't know about his stances, and last election 26% didn't turn up to vote.
- We can change both. We've put together a scorecard showing where the candidates stand, and have a direct mail, social media and doorknocking campaign ready to go.
Can you chip in now to help local GetUp members put this into action? It's the most strategic donation you can make for Tasmania's forests.
Help make this happen:

Here's what's at stake. This is about far more than the Apple Isle. Imagine if Australia's forestry industry only sold timber products from sustainable sources – and customers didn't have to worry about whether important native forests were clearfelled to produce it. Tasmania's forests agreement would be a great start.
The electorate of Nelson, in Hobart's south, is the key. The sitting member Jim Wilkinson has been in power for 18 years. He voted against a deal to save Tassie forests. He voted against marriage equality.
There are three good, progressive candidates running in this election who have a real chance of winning. We thoroughly investigated their background and asked them the tough questions about what they'd do if elected. If successful, they could pass the forests peace deal, make marriage equality law overnight and support a deal with the Federal Government to fix funding for Tassie schools.

How it will work:
View the scorecard we developed below, it shows where each candidate stands on key issues. Our strategy is to get it in the hands of every voter in Nelson, reminding them to not only show up and vote, but to vote for an end to marriage discrimination and for a forestry deal to save Tassie's old growth forests. We will buy up as much advertising and knock at as many doors as we can.
This could be the battle that helps win the war.
