Does it bother anyone else that there seems to be a large amount of
stereo mp3's being shared on the HUB? I find it very annoying when I
do a search for something and the returns are all STEREO files. I
only keep true surround files (NO UPMIXES) in my share; I would hope
others would do the same.

Thoughts on this?

Stereo and upmix materials are always welcomed be me provided they are
unambiguously marked. Nevertheless, I prefer listening to hi-res
surround stuff sourced from multi-tracks.

In my experience, most members clearly mark their files as to format, so it's not an issue for me. FWIW, when I first joined the hub (in the pleistocene epoch), I asked the members if it was acceptable for me to share my stereo collection, and was met with a resounding "yes". Also FWIW, at least 50% of what hubbers upload from me are stereo files (albeit, many of it is hi-res).

Or, as Lokks put it so succinctly, "No."

Of course, no mp3s. One must have some standards...

The availalbilty of rare and OOP stereo Wav, Flac, MP3 or otherwise I
think is a blessing to all us collectors who wish to obtain some of
these awesome stereo works of art but do not have hundreds of dollars
to give to people who think because it is out of print it should be
sold at Sothouby's auction pricing. I for one was quite excited to
find some things on the hub I have been searching for for years. I
have "The Monster Club" Audio soundtrack which is only available on
the PAL DVD overseas and I am sure some of the members who enjoy the
group The Pretty Things, Night and UB40 are exstatic to find those for
their listening pleasure on the Hub. Just a thought....

I'm cool with any shared material even if it's mono :-) But as long as the material has an audiophile quiality (rare, high res, lossless,...)

I'm not fussed what people share as long as it's reasonably well
organised.... although I'd preffer no lossy (stereo) formats, and
imagine others would as well.

Re: stereo vs surround, I'd be glad if people kept sharing stereo
stuff (especially hires) but I'd also understand if a "surround sound
hub" declared stereo was unwelcome.

Generally I would say NO to mp3, BUT there are exceptions to even this
rule.
In my share I have 3 mp3 albums by an obscure group, because I am
searching for better than CD versions of these albums and the mp3s are
there as examples for Hubbers to understand/experience what I'm
searching for.

However I must agree with you that, generally, it can be very annoying
when searching the Hub to have mp3s listed in the results.

Other Stero files like excellent Vinyl rips and the stereo rips of
SACDs are very welcome IMHO as they qualify as Hi-Res.
Personally I prefer a good (Stereo) vinyl rip of any album over the
same album as a surround DTS-CD! The latter might be surround the the
sound quality of DTS-CD generally sucks. They are surround mp3 in my
book!

I've never had a search return anything, so I kind of wish I had that
problem.

I have My Hi Res In one section and the multichannel in another I also
have a rather large stereo collection that i have been accumulating
over a number of years. There are some mp3's included in that. I am
not going to go through all of them and seperate them because thats
the way I like to have them. As far as the purist thing goes sorry to
dissapoint but just scroll through and dont download the mp3 files you
can tell which ones they are after all.

I think most of us are also welcoming to high-res stereo lossless
being lumped in with hi-res multichannel.

CD quality (lossless but especially lossy) is debatable, but I don't
mind it and I've filled some holes in my collection on the hub.

And there lies the rub. I am on record as saying software encoded DTS is
like mp3. AC3 is even worse. But where do we stop? Mostly you find that
everyone is very serious about our aims on the hub and that is first and
foremost to archive. Secondly make available the archive.

It's almost like a library concept but in a library you will also find
tabloid newspapers - in my estimation fairly valueless but to some folks
there is value and it that is democracy in action. Therefore hence my
succinctness.

I have some rarities in stereo and a few upmixes, but if we wish it to be pure I will go along with that.

I would simply recommend that folks properly label their offerings. I
realize people have their shares setup as they like, but perhaps they
could be persuaded to place a NOT_SURROUND.TXT file in with their non-
surround offerings. This would not require anyone to change their
drive/share structures and would alert others to the content within...

I second RW's post - alternate mixes, special stuff/versions are
always welcome, but I too find it would be best if people put stereo
and multichannel into separate folders. I know this it is
timeconsuming to do so and tedious work, but it would be much
appreciated.

All the best to all of us! ;-)

I agree absolutely. Provided the material is clearly labelled, why
should I worry if someone wants to share their super lo-fi Rolf Harris
mp3 collection, and someone else wants to download it? I sure don't,
but live and let live...
