So this is interesting; a 32 bit, 384 kHz capable portable audio player that also will play DSD files. Any takers?...

Beautiful design and impressive statistics. Maybe AFTER I win the lottery!

Actually the price is not bad at all, it is cheaper than the Pono Player and it promises much more (SQ, DSD, phones impedance, etc etc)
There's a 48 special price for the 64gb model, and it supports external memory... I'm in.
Just hope they will actually deliver...

Yes, the Geek Wave looks to be a Pono killer par excellence!  And it has a much more practical form factor.  I, too, hope they can bring it to market - soon.  And I'm somewhat certain they will; these are, after all, the same guys who brought us the DaVinci DAC.  One thing I noticed is that only the top-level model provides a digital output, the rest provide an analog 3.5 mm jack.  However, since they do have the DaVinci experience, I'm also somewhat certain that their DAC implementation will be more than adequate for all but the fussiest audiophools.

The only thing I'm wondering about is why their battery life appears to be only 10 hours with a 5000 mAH battery.  My Sandisk Sansa e280 provides 15-20 hours using a 1300 mAH battery.  The Geek Wave should be capable of 20-30 hours.  Curious.....

I don't think it will fly.  The public doesn't want to carry a separate Android/iPhone and a music player.  And this device needs more features to make it to the audiophile group.  It would be truly versatile if you could output digital to a separate DAC at home.  Only the $1,300 unit has this feature, but it's only s/pdif, which limits you to 2-channel.  So this keeps away the multi-channel fans.  Have it decode ISO files and give it a micro HDMI output and price it below $500 and I'll consider it. :-)

Rw - the answer for your question lies in the ridiculously low output impedance - this is what sets it apart from the pono: whilst for some phones you might need a phones amplifier, the geek can push any type.
And to the one above me who said it won't fly- oh, they said the same about pono and it flew allright- the kickstarter project got about ten times the funding they were hoping for...
People are sick of lousy mp3 files, they want to be able to listen to good quality flacs, and with their audiophile earphones, and what once used to cost 1000$ (ak player for example) now costs considerably less.

I checked the website, but it wasn't totally clear to me. So, does the Geek Wave connect to your Cell Phone, or is it a standalone unit?
It it very interesting though to have this technology at a decent price point.

The website states that it is a standalone player.

Highlander, I'll state it one more time - this is a standalone player with its own amp, DACs, and user interface.  Hopefully that is totally clear now...

Ok, glad to hear that its now a stand alone player. I ordered Geek's "Pulse" desktop DAC months ago and look forward to hearing native stereo DSD throuth it. I believe when Geek originally started their crowd funded "Wave" campaign, it was supposed to connect to your smart phone. Thanks for clarifying that up. So now, pairing my AKG 701 with a $219 Wave seems pretty tempting.

Highlander,

Ah, so you get a discount because of your previous purchase; nice. I would be quite interested in a review of the Geek Pulse (and Wave for that matter) when you get it and if you get a chance. I recently purchased an Aune T1 tube DAC through Massdrop and really love it, but it is only capable up to 24/96, which is fine for most things, but I am keen to hear if native stereo DSD really makes a significant difference.

Thanks in advance, hope the Pulse lives up to your expectations!

Dave

I'm really into portable hi-resolution music. I've ripped over 200 SACD's and DVD-A's. And I've been doing most of my purchasing lately on the high resolution sites. I also rip LP's using a pro high resolution recorder.
I have an Astel&Kern AK120 that converts DSD to PCM. I really don't bother with DSD for that device because 88.2k flacs sound fine and are half the size.
I got to compare DSD to PCM on a Chord Hugo and the advantages were still pretty slight.
I think it's really easy to get caught up in specs, but sound quality is a lot more complex than numbers can express. I would probably rather listen to redbook CD's through the Hugo than 192khz 24 bit on most other devices.
Head-fi.org is full of great info about portable audio. If you can make it to one of their meet-ups you will learn a lot and have a great time.

They are now offering a 32gb player for the price if 148$- according to them they lose money on it, so it is limited to 80.
According to the specs, this is really worth it...

Does anyone know if these players will output in 5.1 or are they 2 channel only?

Assuming 2 with the rca output.  U can do 5.1 on android with MHL but think you may be limited to dts or dulby.  And the right connector.  Not sure you'd consider that audiophile given the DAC and HDMI are yr choices.  Not aware of many mch DACs.  And i think MHL was envisioned as a video application.  Youd have to try it out.  My tab dropped.

Well, I took the plunge for the portable Geek Wave 32, even though my desktop Geek Pulse has yet to arrive. What sold me on the Wave was the strong possibility of them making it also function as stand alone DAC. That is, if they reach their next money goal. But, at this point, it looks like they will! I got the Wave for $167 too, which will be nice for portable audio, and to hook up to my laptop as a DAC. :-)

Gentlemen,

After receiving referral rewards from LH Labs (Geek Wave Portable Audiophile Player - Indiegogo) that I certainly would not have received if not for this community, I feel obligated to share the wealth.

I assume the four members in our group who bought Geek Waves put me down as a referrer, which I did not request, but certainly greatly appreciate. Thank you!

From the original thread, I know that Highlander, August Bleed, and Stephen Disney ordered one, but am not sure of the fourth, so please speak up if you did order one. (flytomars?)

As a token of my appreciation I will either:

1. Send you half of the referral fee ($10) via PayPal
2. Donate the $10 to our surround group

Please let me know which you prefer, along with PayPal info if you pick option 1.

Thanks again to those gave a referral, and all who make this community possible.

Actually, I knew about the Wave on my own since I already purchased their Pulse desktop DAC. Sorry, I didn't use your name as a referral. Geek was sending me weekly emails about the Wave during their online campaign, so I was keeping myself up to date. But, that is mighty noble of you to offer this. :-) By the way, my Pulse still hasn't arrived. At this rate, I suppose the Geek Wave will appear next summer....
Cheers, Highlander

That makes sense. Well sleuthed, Sherlock, er, Stephen.

So essentially none of us did a damn thing but were rewarded for it nonetheless. You gotta like it.

OK, so did I have the correct four in my original post? Speak up...doing nothing in this case will cost you. :)

I thought about that option,
But then I checked the initial link and it looks like a regular link. Usually referal links have in the end something to identify the referee (ie ref=hgrsgt54rdruelckgfddd) and the link at the begining of this thread is totally regular... comprisrd fully of sensible words and no hint where the ref id can be hidden in it...

Ah wait, it is probably the second link that might have referral id, so anyone who ordered the 32gig version via this link was counted :)
So alas, I still did not contribute to this ad I bought via yhe first link, but at least you got something for the second link :)

True.  I ordered from the second link.  I eventually upgraded to the standard GW128 with WIFI and standalone DAC.
