Hi,

I wonder, does anyone know how I can get onto the hub and start contributing? I can successfully log into ShakesPeer and see many users, but I cannot browse their files, so I think that my firewall etc. settings are not correct (I am new to Port Forwarding and so on)

I am using a Mac.

Kind regards all,
Ben

Hey Ben

I remember trying to use Shakespeer but not having any luck with it. You’ll notice that the last version was released in 2013 and a lot has changed with MacOS since then, I’m surprised it even launches at all!

i recommend you visit https://sourceforge.net/projects/shakespeer/ and see if you can find a different DC++ App to use.

I wasn’t too concerned about not having Shakespeer work on my Mac because I also have a PC and there’s no problem with that.

You could try and PC emulator on your Mac to get a Windows client to work. Check this out https://www.iphonetopics.com/windows-emulator-for-mac/

HTH

Sorry I’ve been busy of late and haven’t responded. It is likely a port issue, though I’m not entirely sure how to help, as the way to deal with that is a bit different on every router/firewall. If you have the option to turn on UPnP or NAT-PNP or something similar that may let you use Shakespeer. Otherwise you may need to figure out how to forward ports (you’ll need to figure out how to forward the port that Shakespeer is using, which you can find or set in the Network section of the preferences), to your computer (you may need to give your computer a fixed IP address too). You can probably find instructions on how to do it for your router if you do some googleing.

Shakespeer is very old but I haven’t found a single other Mac Hub client that works, so it’s what I use. I expect next year when Mac OS stops supporting 32-bit applications I’m going to just be out of luck unless I want to run an entire Virtual machine just to keep my hub software running (or I just don’t upgrade but eventually I’ll want/need to).

I will also point out that the “test” option in the preferences is pretty much useless. Mine always that TCP and UDP are unreachable for me, even when in fact everything is working just fine.

Hi

I’ve got the latest MacOS 10.14.3 and Shakespeer 0.9.11 (which I believe is the last released version) but I can’t get to anything but the preferences. On launch Shakespeer stalls on “Please wait while Shakespeer is starting up. Connecting to backend server” which it never does.

Luckily I have a PC next to me.

Cheers
Gary

Thanks Gary, Stephen and others. I have found a program called EiskaltDC++ with which I am going to try and persevere!

I am also going to look more closely than I have in the past into Windows emulation. I'll let the group know how I get on...

Interesting! I may give that a look too. A client that’s in active development is something I’ve been looking for for a while.

Hey Ben

Did you have any luck with EiskaltDC++?

I installed it last night and managed to login to the Hub and saw all the users but wasn’t able to;

- download/browse anybody’s shares
- search not getting any results

This morning I went to the App’s preferences and changed “Connection” type from “Active” to “Firewall with UPnP and managed to download a users share list, search works, and start downloading a file! So all is good for me.

Thanks for pointing this App out. Maybe I can shut my PC down again!

Cheers
Gary

Hi Gary,

So far, I got the same as you! It’s the same situation as Shakespeer - I can see users but unable to browse their files or do anything else. That’s why I taught it must be my firewall settings or something.

I will keep on trying, and if I get anywhere I will let you (and the group) know.

Regards,
Ben

Did you read this bit in my last email?

" This morning I went to the App’s preferences and changed “Connection” type from “Active” to “Firewall with UPnP" and managed to download a users share list, search works, and start downloading a file! So all is good for me"

So this is working okay for me now ... without having to forward ports or anything ...

Thanks. Unfortunately, this only partially works for me, however. After changing the connection type in Eiskalt, all I get while trying to connect to the hub (that Lokks told me the address of when I first started) is Connecting to Hub > Connected to Hub > Fail: connection closed.

It has to be the application as I am not seeing any alerts in  Ptokax which is the hub administration and I did check 5 minutes ago.

You likely need to turn on UPnP on your router for that setting to work. (It is sometimes called NAT-PNP or something like that).

Mac users, I have successfully been exploring/browsing users folders, using EiskaltDC++. Whereas before I thought that something was wrong with my firewall settings so that users folders appeared to be unavailable, I I think I was not actually waiting long enough for the actual contents to show up. I also made sure that I had Preferences>Connection>Firewall with port forwarding selected, which I am not sure was the case before.

Now all I have to do is to identify where I locate files so that others can browse me (not that I have loads and loads as yet) but I hope that is relatively trivial, what with the instructions I received from Lokks.

All the best,
Ben

Hello,

Although I have logged on to the hub and can download others files, I cannot work out how I put my share (such as it is) somewhere so that others can browse me. I don't want to be a leech on others generosity, so if anyone knows how one can do this using EiskaltDC++ I'd be grateful :-)

Regards,
Ben

In Apex it is shared folders/drives, I've never used Eiskalt but assume it is similar

In Eiskalt, you just have to tell it what folders you want to share. Make sure the stuff you're sharing is in those folders and you're good to go. I can't recall off the top of my head where that option was when I set it up recently but it's no doubt somewhere in preferences or whatever. I'll try to remember to check when I get home.

Just to make this all clear, you don't have to put them in a special folder that Eiskalt specifies, you just tell Eiskalt what folder you're already keeping them in.

Yeah, just confirmed. All you have to do is go to Preferences, then to “Sharing.” From there you may have to right click in the box to the right and choose “add” then just go point it to the folder where you keep the stuff you want to share.
