I've been debating between the WD player or the Popcorn Hour player
for a few weeks. I'd like to have the network ability. My current
receiver doesn't have HDMI, so it would mean upgrading that as well.
Perhaps I'll just wait until next fall to do the receiver and see if
there's any new players out by then. It is a great way to go vs. a
HTPC.

I have one these devices (WD TV) and really enjoy it. I do wish it
had network connectivity, but that's a minor nit. The sound quality
is terrific and the user interface is quite intuitive and easy to
navigate. If you'd like to be able to hear or see some of the
terrific downloads to be had from the Surround Hubs, this device
warrants your attention...

Best Wishes,

Hey RW, I know this player probably doesn't do mlp, but will it allow
playback of the 5.1 wav's or flac's? I figured one of these players
would be great for playback of mlp's extracted from dvd-audio, but
would probably have to be converted to another format first.

In your experience, does it support dts-encoded flac files? I haven't been able to get mine to recognize any multichannel files.

I *seriously* doubt it will play MLP. I know it can play FLAC and I
*think* it will do DTS FLAC OK, but I would absolutely *not* recommend
it as a music player. I've had one for months and think it's great
for video, but the little bit I fooled around with it for audio made
it clear that it's incredibly clumsy for anything other than playing
one file at a time. If you really need to be able to play DTS or AC-3
from a FLAC, you're much better off with a Squeezebox. It will only
do audio, but it will do it very, very well.
