I want to buy a surround player for my car,
I have seen one that caught my eye but then when I read its spec again
I noticed that it doesnt play DVDA-
It has: Dolby, DTS, and DTS Audio CD
On the other hand, I think I read somewhere that DTS DVD and DVDA are
actually the same format,
only DTS DVDs dont use the DVDA logo hence dont pay to the format
originators.
Is this true? and does this mean all players that have DTS encoders
can read DVDA?

No, this is not true, DVD-A is not the same thing as dts. However,
just about all commercial dvd-a discs do contain a dvd-v portion which
contains the album in dolby digital, so a surround player for the car
that can play dolby digital from a dvd will play that off the dvd-a,
and probably be good enough for the car. Many dvd-a discs do contain
dts on the dvd-v portion of the disc, but not all. However, if you
have a dvd-a discs that has no dvd-v portion, like some of my earlier
conversions, you won't be able to play those in the car on this
player.

Hi folks. I too have always been interested in getting 5.1 in the car. Does anyone know of a good car stereo make/model that supports DTS 5.1 (up to 96 kHz) and SACD multi-channel? Is there such a model out there?

OK, I got it sorted out-
It is not completely untrue,
There is a format that is called "DTS 96/24" and has an "advanced
resolution" logo where applicable,
and is more or less the same as DVDA (with the ability to add video)
It is a lossless format, and some DVDAs I have are actually DTS 96/24
(talking heads for example)
So, DVDA wont play on this machine, but DTS96/24 will probably play -
I need to check it out...

I have a Sony MEX DV-2000 that plays SACD/mp3/DVD/DTS 5.1. The documentation doesn't make it clear if it supports DTS up to 96kHz. If you can identify a recording that uses this format, I'll see if I have it and test the unit.

It does NOT support DVD-Audio. Meh.

Hi Bob. Off the top of my head, all the Bjork 5.1's, all the Depeche Mode 5.1's, Yazoo Upstairs at Eric's, Nirvana Unplugged and all the Genesis 5.1 DVD's offer DTS at 96 kHz.

OK - I was just listening to The Lamb from the mojave site yesterday, so if that is a measure then the MEX-DV2000 supports DTS at 96. Let me know if you want me to email you the manual.

Some pros and cons of this unit:
Pros:
  • Plays CD/DVD-V/DTS/mp3/compressed wma.
  • I think the sound is very respectable - but unless your car offers good cabin soundproofing, you'll always have to put up with a certain degree of road noise. I divide my listening pretty equally among rock, jazz, classical, and "everything else", and it is only in some of the quieter passages in classical recordings and some ECM titles that the road-static becomes truly distracting.
  • Decent options as far as setting up speakers.
  • Has an input for portable players, so I can play flac and ape through my Cowon S9 and/or Zen stone.

Cons:
  • The one-line display is lacking compared to the two-line display in my old Kenwood.
  • There is no video screen, so you have to be able to navigate through DVD menus by memory or intuition. Depending on your budget, it may be worth the cost to look at units with a proper video screen.

Thanks Bob. It's Sony but doesn't support SACD?

Let me know, I might have missed that in the attached.

DTS96/24 is arguably less lossy than vanilla DTS, but it is
absolutely, positively *not* a lossless format.

Thanks Ben and all the other replys!
Unfortunately I cannot get this model here,
So in the end I bought a cheap clarion that reads DTS and DTS-CD,
Gave up on DVDA / SACD, on the other hand I wasnt too keen to take my
official SACDs in my car so DTS was enough for me...
