ANNOUNCEMENT

Leave the couch and chips behind, and come join us. On Tuesday, January 17th at 6:30 PM, in Grace Center at Trinity Lutheran Church, 119 Texas St, the Sunnyland Neighborhood Association will hold our first neighborhood meeting of the New Year.

Bellingham City Council Member Cathy Lehman will address the meeting and answer questions from neighbors. Come out and meet Bellingham’s newest council member from the third ward.

Also, at this meeting the Sunnyland Board will introduce a proposal to make major changes to Alabama St as it passes through our neighborhood between James St and Cornwall Ave. The proposal includes lowering the speed limit to 25mph, creating a center turn lane, two travel lanes, and two bicycle lanes.

The SNA Board would like residents to come out and discuss this proposal, in order to determine whether or not there is neighborhood support to move forward with this proposal. Alabama St is an important city arterial. Any changes to this arterial would have to be well studied by the Public Works Dept. Demonstrated, strong neighborhood support for this proposal would help get the ball rolling.

Mark your new calendar. Pass along this info to a neighbor. Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the invite and info, Patrick! I teach on Tuesday evenings
and can't be at the meeting, so here's my brief feedback on the
traffic idea:

Without seeing the full proposal, I love the goals of slowing traffic
and making Alabama safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. Great idea!
If the city agrees to study this, I would want to know how the changes
could potentially impact non-arterial automobile traffic. For example:
If it took longer for drivers to get from Cornwall to James on Alabama
(and vice versa), would it increase cut-through traffic between
Alabama and:
- Grant south to State (shortcut to James/State)
- Ellis or Dean South to Kentucky (shortcut to Cornwall and downtown)
- Ellis, Dean or Franklin north to Sunset (shortcut to interstate,
Sunset, and hospital)
- Or could it increase east-west cut-throughs between James and
Cornwall on East North, Texas, Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, etc.?

Thanks to the Sunnyland board for starting this conversation! Tim and
I have appreciated all of the traffic calming and pedestrian/bicycle
safety measures SNA and neighbors have helped accomplish in the six
years since we've been in the neighborhood: Speed and traffic
reductions on Grant and King; crosswalks across James and Alabama;
bike lanes on Cornwall; and more. Keep up the remarkably good work!

Best,
Liz

Thanks Elizabeth. That's why we are involved - to preserve and
augment this great Sunnyland neighborhood, and I might add - to ensure
that the city council and mayor are kept aware of our desires and
goals for the neighborhood.

Good points regarding possible cut thru streets. Definetely don't want to
have that.
thanks for your input.

Hi,

I wonder about these same issues. I live on Ellis Street and have been adversely effected by all the cut through traffic. Also, I am smelling an odd smell this afternoon. Is anyone else noticing this? I wonder if it is from the wood plant. Who would I report this too?

Hi Lucia...
I have smelled a smell recently myself and called the NWCleanAir and there was a follow-up on it but they did not detect anything when they showed up but it smelled to me like pain fumes or something of that nature.  I have recently smelled it again but cannot decide where it comes from...I live on Virginia between ellis and franklin.  My suggestion if anyone smells this odor please call NWC ASAP.  Thanks!

Have a great Day!  Theresa
