Subject: Attention Students: Helping Sunlight During Google Summer of Code

I'm glad to announce that Sunlight has been accepted as a mentoring
organization in Google's Summer of Code this year (
http://socghop.appspot.com/org/show/google/gsoc2009/sunlight).

For those of you that are not familiar with Summer of Code, it is an
opportunity for students to work on open source projects during the summer
while receiving a stipend from google.  When you apply you select a project
from a provided ideas list at
http://wiki.sunlightlabs.com/index.php/GSOC_2009 and if accepted google will
pay you a stipend while Sunlight Labs members will mentor you and make sure
that your proposed project gets done.

The only strict requirement for participation is that you are enrolled in a
college or university program as of April 20, 2009.  For more details see
http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/program/google/gsoc2009/faqs

The application period opens next week Monday, March 23, 2009 and ends
Friday, April 3rd but it is a good idea to start preparing now by talking to
us on this list, and in our #transparency IRC channel on IRC.

This is a great opportunity, we really hope that all of you that are
currently students and interested in working on open source projects in this
area should apply.

For more details and to apply visit

About 5 of us in the office tend to idle in there while we're in the office
(around 10am-6pm EST) along with around 10 others.  It is quiet most of the
time but we keep an eye on it and we do have a bit of active discussion in
there, especially lately regarding the fifty state project.
