***If your mentoring organization has already returned its tax form to
Google, you can stop reading now.***

Hello everyone,

I've had a few people ask me for this information on the support alias,
so I'm reposting it here in case it is helpful to anyone else.

In all cases, please consult with a tax professional if you have any
questions about the appropriate form to submit or to determine how
these payments may impact you from a taxation perspective.

Links to the various forms referenced in this message appear at the end
of this post.

Organizations Based in the United States:

Please return IRS form W9 to Google. Assuming you are not subject to
backup withholding, we will pay your Google Summer of Code program
payments to you without withholding any taxes. If you are subject to
backup withholding, Google will withhold 28% of the payment per US tax
law. Google will issue a 1099 to you in early 2007.

Organizations Based outside the United States:

If none of your mentors or students for the Google Summer of Code
program are in the United States, you can execute our Foreign
Certification form and no taxes will be withheld. You will be
responsible for paying any applicable taxes to the appropriate
governing bodies.

If you have either students or mentors in the United States, regardless
of where your organization is based, you will need to return form
W8-BEN to Google. The default withholding amount for those residing
outside the United States who are subject to US taxes is 30%, but you
may claim a lower withholding rate by returning the W8-BEN to us. If
you do not have a taxpayer identification number, you will need to
apply for one in order to claim a lower withholding rate using form
W8-BEN.

Organizations Wishing to Donate Their GSoC Monies to Other
Organizations:

We would require a W9 or W8-BEN as applicable, for this organization.

How to Return These Forms to Google:

You can either fax the forms to me at +1.650.649.1732 or send a scanned
copy via email to soc2006...@google.com.

If your organization would like to email the form, the following note
must be included in the body of the email message:

"As a representative of <Org Name>, I understand and assume any risks
associated with the fact that email is not a secure medium for the
transmission of <Org Name>'s financial data."

Please make the subject of your email "Tax Form for <Org Name>."
