Dear Graduate Student,

sorry for mis-posting this. we are trying to post this where grad
students can see this...
We apologize for any inconveniences.

In light of Monday's Daily editorial that recommended against the
passage of Fair funding amendment, we feel it's necessary to inform
you of the potential impact of the amendemnts on the graduate students.

... Pass this email to your graduate friends! Election rules prohibit us
from Mass Mailing it to everyone, but the best way to get the word out
is through word-of-mouth...

There are two separate bills on the ballot of significant importance
to graduate students.

**********************************************
***** VOTE YES on splitting special fees *****
**********************************************

*** Monday's (4/11/94) Stanford Daily editorial has recommended "NO"
on this amendment. For a CON argument, please read the Daily. We
think their argument is not substantial enough to overshadow the
merits of this Bill...
****

This will affect the ASSU fees you receive every quarter.

This amendment will to separately tally graduate and undergraduate
votes during election, and the grads/undergrads will only fund what
they each approve.

Currently
---------
Presently, a student group is funded when the majority of students
vote for that group. However, most student groups are
undergrad-oriented.

Couple years ago, the "Graduate Student Association" did not receive
the majority of votes, and therefore did not receive funding. Part of
the problem is that even if all graduates voted 'yes', because # of
voting undergrads traditionally outweighed voting grads, GSA would
still not receive funding.

What will it do?
----------------
What this new amendment will do is separate the student body into two
populations, grad and undergrad. If both grad + undergrad approves
the fee, then both groups will pay for that groups request.

If the undergrad approve the fee, (by majority of undergrad votes)
and grads don't, then ** only undergrads pay the fee **.

Conversely, if graduates approve the fee and undergrads don't , only
grads pay the fee.

What will happen if it passes?
------------------------------
We encourage you to vote "YES" on this amendement since it would
provide a more fair funding scheme to graduate students.

What will most likely happen :

1. The graduate students will see their fees drop.

2. The graduate students would not have to resort to getting their
refunds back as a way to vent their frustration, and hurting the
student group in the process.

3. We can now FUND what we (as a group) choose, and NOT FUND as a group,
instead of being overshadowed by the larger undergraduate group.

4. You still can REFUND your money as usual. (This bill does NOT
change the way refunds are done). However, this bill allows
graduate-specific groups (such as GSA) to get funded.

************************************************
***** VOTE NO on senate reform/districting *****
************************************************

*** Monday's (4/11/94) Stanford Daily editorial has recommended "YES"
on this amendment. For a PRO argument, please read the Daily.
***

This bill is more particular to the assu senate organizatin itself...
This amendment is a write-in amendment by an undergrad senator
(Lucas). This bill does 3 things: (a). districting of undergrads
geographically (kind of like congressional districts) (b). move
election to fall (instead of spring) (c). make non-voting senators
voting senators
(currently there are
20 grad
10 voting, 10 non-voting
20 ugrad
10 voting, 10 non-voting
)

we recommend "NO" on this bill because traditionally, the graduate
senate seats are hard to fill. It's definitely hard to get all 20
grads show up at a meeging. (c) effectively makes grad represenation
MUCH weaker in the senate.
