Sick to death of lenders claiming their pound of flesh? Student loans killing you? If you need to take action for student loan justice, here's how to start. Wonder where those law suits and class actions are? They're here. And our Congressmen and women are listening. Is 2009 our year? Alan Collinge is going to meet with Jesse Jackson this month, April 2009. The national group has 6000 members and a Facebook group got 130,000 members in a few months, signing an on line petition to reduce student debt to stimulate the economy.
Student Loan Justice supports the student protestors at UC Berkeley and other UC campuses in the demand for negotiations about budget cuts. The fee hike compounds the student loan problem. Student loans will ruin your life. Berkeley tuition protest videos and pictures shot by Cindy Warner on file below.
Congress reps working on bankruptcy and student legislation for 2009 are Pete Stark and Lynn Woolsey along with Danny Davis. Eighteen members of Congress signed a letter in December 2008 asking for our consumer rights back. (below, articles section) Past efforts in recent years have been voted down but that was before the new administration. As of mid February 2009, Jeff Hild of Stark's office advises me Danny Davis joined Stark's Ways and Means committee and so many not serve on any other. Who did Danny Davis pass the ball to then?
Even if you feel hopeless and alone or tired and sick, you still have your voice and so do thousands and millions just like you. Read the candid stories of other Californians below. Alan Collinge the founder of Student Loan Justice says there are 5-10 million defaulted borrowers in this country. The national or parent organization has four thousand members. Alan estimates one in five student borrowers end up in default and the student loan debt is at $550 billion, while total credit card debt is at $850 billion. Alan's book is out, via Amazon, The Student Loan Scam. www.StudentLoanJustice.org. Excerpts below. Also the movie trailer is out for The Default Movie at http://vimeo.com/2618035?pg=embed&sec=2618035.
This site and SLJ is about human and Constitutional rights, dignity, restoring creative and productive lives. To this end here is information supplied as a peer, a pedestrian activist. If you wish to voice your story and wishes to your legislators, stress the desperate need for Congress to restore standard consumer protections to student loans. Essentially stress the desperate need to include the same standard consumer protections that ARM mortgage borrowers, pay day borrowers, IRS debtors, and credit card borrowers enjoy.
1. Full bankruptcy protections 2. Refinancing rights 3. Statutes of limitations and caps on amounts
All for one and one for all. Don't give up. As our Ms. Reynolds says in her successful court case, you have done nothing wrong. Don't kill yourself.
