---------------------------------------
We are having same really uncomfortable days here in Budapest. Today is
the fourth day that the slight majority of the unions of BKV employees
are on strike. This means that metro and trolley bus lines are working
normally, the HV lines are working almost normally, but there are
hardly any buses out there and trams are more or less confined to only a
few lines (1, 2, 6, sometimes 47A or/and 41A, 14, 28). Since in recent
decades tram and bus lines were shaped in a way that they are feeders to
metro lines, this leads to a really ugly chaos, where external bus line
operators (quite a few buses, sometimes whole lines are being operated
by contractors since years) and BKV drivers who are against the stike
are trying to keep up a minimal service through the city (hungarian laws
don't require a minimal agreeded level of service to be kept if the
unions and the employers can't agree - and the lack of empathy on the
unions's side usually results in such a mess).

This means some main bus lines are kept up with a colorful variety of
Voln suburban and interurban buses helping out non-striking BKV drivers
with their vehicles, and tram 2 and 6 are the only tram lines running
their whole route, although with headways varying between 12 and 20
minutes (even instead of the 1.5-2 minutes in the rush hours on route
4/6 - you can now imagine the crowd!). The other trams operating are
truncated shuttle services mainly between larger housing areas and the
nearest metro station, or stopa of tram 6 or the bus line 173.

Budapest_1439_short47_strike_MoriczZsigmondkorter.jpg shows one of the
only two trams in service yesterday coming out of a depot on the Buda
side. It's doing a "47A" service between Budafok, Vroshz tr and
Mricz Zsigmond krtr.

On Budapest_1545_short14_strike_UjpestVaroskozpont.jpg we can see
something more interesting: a TW6000 on a short version of route 14
running between the Angyalfld remise and Kposztsmegyer, Megyeri t (a
really large housing area). This type of tram was never used in this
part of the city. In fact it was brought over from across the city, from
Kispest, because the drivers willing to work on this line have a
contract with that unit of the BKV (BKV Tram Operations South-Pest or
something like that), so they are only allowed to drive their trams, but
not the ones in the Angyalfld remise.

Schne Grsse,
kos
