Subject: Question about side flow weir...
Hello SWMMers,
I would like to confirm how SWMM5 models side flow weir. Does it use Q=f(H^5/3) to model side flow weir and it does not account for the effect of approach velocity? I have read it in some SWMM documentation/discussion but I'm not sure how official those documentation/discussions are. Thanks for your information and confirmation.
Regards,
Joseph

Hi Joseph,
SWMM 5.0.018 uses the equation
Q = Cd * *Length * h^5/3 for flow in the positive direction if you use a side flow weir
Q = Cd * *Length * h^3/2 for reverse flow.
It does account for the loss through a weir flap gate using the Armco head loss from a flap gate but does not use the approach velocity. There was a comment in the SWMM 4 code about the approach velocity but the approach velocity was always assumed to be zero.
