TV Times: Is E15 Ethanol a NASCAR Time Bomb?
by Lou Modestino

The Daly Planet, with its accompanying Blog, suggests that NASCAR’s involvement with Ethanol 15 could be a time bomb!

John Daly pointed out that even the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers recently filed a petition with the U.S. Appellate Court challenging the EPA’s approval for gas containing 15 percent Ethanol. Similar concerns have also been expressed by Fox Cable News contributors John Stossel and Glen Beck.

Are Fans Going to Show Up This Year to the Track?

The holidays have concluded and life is beginning to settle back into reality. It is January and it amazes me to think that preliminary testing for the Daytona 500 is less than three weeks away already. It seems like I was watching the banquet ceremony just last night and already the hype is starting to form for the 2011 Daytona 500. The problem however is just how much hype will there actually be this year. In a country that’s going to see an increase in gas prices this year and a struggling economy, NASCAR has to stop and consider the following question: Are fans going to show up this year to the track? Racetracks are offering out

Robby Gordon Eighth In First Dakar Stage

NASCAR driver Robby Gordon finished eighth in the first stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday as he finished 11 minutes, 4 seconds behind leader Carlos Sainz in the route from Victoria to Cordoba in Argentina. The 138-mile stage was the first of 13 timed stages of the event, which opened Saturday with a ceremonial parade stage. Gordon, driving a Robby Gordon Motorsports Hummer, finished the route in 2 hours, 29 minutes and 36 seconds. The second stage will be Monday with a 201-mile route from Cordoba to San Miguel de Tucuman. “Tomorrow’s stage is supposed to go through the mountains, which are not good for us for two reasons: First, the Hummers are not turbo-charged then the course is a little narrow," Gordon said. "They did say that we should encounter some bumps, which could be good for us.”(scenedaily.com)

Rusty Wallace Racing Hires Doug Randolph To Crew Chief No. 66

Officials of Rusty Wallace Racing (RWR) announced today that NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series veteran, Doug Randolph, has been named crew chief for driver Steve Wallace and RWR's No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota, in their charge for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship. Randolph joins RWR following stints as crew chief at such organizations as Richard Childress Racing, Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing and Petty Enterprises. In his most recent Nationwide Series crew chief role, Randolph led Childress's No. 29 team and driver Clint Bowyer to wins at Daytona and Dover in 2009. Noted RWR General Manager Larry Carter, "We're very excited to add Doug Randolph to our organization. I've known Doug for a while and he's a really talented guy. He brings a lot of valuable experience to our team, including a lot of experience with the Car of Tomorrow. We're all looking forward to working with him."

Penske Racing Names Todd Gordon Nationwide Crew Chief

Penske Racing has announced that experienced crew chief Todd Gordon has been named as the crew chief for the defending NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) championship-winning No. 22 Discount Tire/Ruby Tuesday Dodge team for 2011. Gordon, who most recently served as race engineer for Diamond-Waltrip Racing in the Nationwide Series, will take over the team that earned Penske Racing’s first NASCAR championship last season with driver Brad Keselowski claiming six wins, five poles and a series single-season record 26 top-five finishes. Gordon will be paired with Keselowski as the No. 22 team will once again pursue the Nationwide Series title in 2011.

Gordon, who graduated from Clemson University with a mechanical engineering degree, has served as a crew chief several times throughout his 12-year career in racing. Prior to working with Diamond-Waltrip Racing, he was crew chief at Baker Curb Racing in the Nationwide Series and he also helped build the CJM Racing Nationwide Series program from the ground up, serving as both team manager and crew chief. This will also mark Gordon’s second stint as crew chief of the No. 22 NNS car as he actually led the “double deuce” team when it was part of PPC Racing in 2006. Paul Wolfe, who helped lead the No. 22 team to the NNS championship this season, was named recently as crew chief of Penske Racing’s No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge in the NASCAR Cup Series beginning in 2011, which created the opportunity for Gordon.

Billy Ballew Motorsports Merges With Vision Aviation Racing

Billy Ballew Motorsports (BBM) announced today that the team has merged with Vision Aviation Racing (VAR) to continue to field the No. 15 and No. 51 entries in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The announcement was made today by Ballew and Vision Aviation Racing General Manager Tom Davis. The team will compete under the Vision Aviation Racing banner and race with the same winning equipment and resources Billy Ballew Motorsports is known for. Ballew will keep an ownership stake in the team. Up-and-coming drivers Justin Johnson and Dusty Davis, who both competed in the Super Late Model and K&N Pro Series West divisions in 2010 for VAR, will make their Truck Series debut in 2011. The team will remain supported by Toyota. Vision Aviation Racing, already a winning team on the West Coast, will carry on the tradition of Billy Ballew Motorsports, which just completed a history-best season with two wins and a second-place finish in the drivers' championship by Aric Almirola. The team is also known for teaming with Kyle Busch to collect 16 wins before Busch started his own operation. The team merger is still in process with key personnel yet to be finalized. The team will compete out of VAR's Mooresville facility, located directly across from the former Billy Ballew Motorsports location.

  • Day 1: Robby Gordon and the 2011 Dakar Rally: Today [Jan 2nd] marked the official start of the 2011 Dakar Rally. Stage 1, the first of 13 timed stages in this year's rally race, included a 566-km road section and a 222-km special that began in Victoria and ended in Cordoba. Heavy rain created an unforeseen obstacle for Team Hummer. According to the TV choppers flying over the route, the participants in the car category suffered from skidding and sliding. Robby Gordon, driver of the #303 SPEED Energy / Toyo Tires Hummer, started today's special in fourth place. He was scored 9th as he crossed the CP1 marker located at km 137 together while last year's winner, Carlos Sainz, led the field. Eliseo Salazar, driver of the #327 SPEED Energy / Cristal CERO Hummer finished today's stage 28th, 34 minutes, 25 seconds behind.
For fans tracking the Dakar Rally at home, please visit

The team will also be doing a preview daily leading up to the Rally that details their Dakar program and what it takes to get the team ready to participate in the 14-stage event. The Versus Channel will provide coverage throughout the United States. A 30-minute daily program featuring highlights from that day's racing will be aired on Versus daily at 3:30pm with a replay airing later in the day. • Another Aussie looking to make a future in NASCAR: Andrew Hagen is helping dig tunnels under the tropical city of Brisbane, not far from where he grew up in Australia. A few weeks ago, he was living in White Lake, pursuing a dream of making it as a NASCAR driver. Hagen, 24, isn't giving up. He returned Down Under in November to see his family and make some seed money. He will be back in Michigan in the New Year to resume his racing career, competing in the Must See Racing Extreme Sprint Series, one of the fastest short-track oval series in the country. In the past Hagen drove in the Super Late Model Series at tracks like Toledo Speedway and Auto City Speedway in a car owned by Penske Racing's Brad Keselowski. Hagen said he would like to run the series again, doubling it up with his dirt and pavement sprint-car program. "It's going to get busy on the track," said Hagen, a regular in the Michigan International Speedway media room since arriving in the U.S. a couple years ago. "Every time you get behind the wheel of a racecar is valuable. You learn something different." Right now, Hagen is working 20-hour shifts under Brisbane. He drives a truck hauling dirt out of the tunnels. "It's not glamorous but the pay is great," Hagen said. "Driving a truck underground at night is a little crazy but it all helps." Hagen drove a couple of sprint-car races late in the 2010 season, one at Berlin Raceway near Grand Rapids and the other at Anderson Speedway in Indiana. He will drive next year for Don and Suellen Wilshe, owners of Wilshe Motorsports Bio-Based USA team.(Detroit Free Press)(1-1-2011)

Starr has a deal with Zachry to continue to be his primary sponsor, but he is still looking for a place for both to land in 2011. "This time of year is very critical and important, trying to get everything situated so the team can hire and update some equipment," Starr said. After starting last season with Randy Moss Motorsports, Starr made a jump midyear to SS Green Light Racing and didn't miss a beat. All Eyes on Daytona Test January 11, 12, 13

(TOLEDO, Ohio - January 3, 2011) - With the holidays in the rearview mirror, all eyes now turn to Daytona International Speedway, where the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards will kick off its 59th consecutive season of competition on Saturday, February 12. While Danica Mania garnered the lion's share of the media attention last year, in the end, the cameras had no choice but to point toward series veteran Bobby Gerhart, who picked up a record sixth victory at the "World Center of Racing."
