Allmendinger, Busch Top Sprint Cup Qualifying Sessions
There may not be any points on the line in tonight’s Sprint Showdown and All-Star Race, but that doesn’t mean the teams want to win any less. Not only is there a million-dollar paycheck on the line, but there’s a year’s worth of bragging rights and a guaranteed spot in the next ten All-Star races on the line. The 22 drivers in the Sprint Showdown are racing for the right to race with the All-Stars in the main event, and A.J. Allmendinger will have a front row seat for the start. Allmendinger blasted to the pole with a 28.057-second lap (192.465 MPH), besting second-place Martin Truex, Jr. by two tenths of a second for the top spot. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Burton, and Aric Almirola rounded out the top-5 qualifiers.
“For me, it was a perfect lap,” said Allmendinger of his effort. “I felt in practice we struggled a little bit just trying to figure out what the car needed. Todd Gordon and the guys out together a good setup, and I felt like that was as perfect as I could run the lap. Obviously with a short race, track position is going to be everything. The car felt good. Being an impound race, that’s a good sign for tomorrow.”
Teams in the Showdown will not be able to make adjustments to their race cars prior to the race without a penalty.
For the teams already assured a spot in the Sprint All-Star Race, qualifying takes on a new level of competition, as drivers must make three laps, including a four-tire pit stop. The No. 18 team of Kyle Busch reeled off a 12.2-second stop when their turn came, and their driver handled the rest, taking the pole with an aggregate time of 119.112 seconds, at an average speed of 132.006 miles per hour. Ryan Newman held the top spot for most of the night, only to lose the top spot to Busch by .709 seconds on the last attempt. Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle, and Kevin Harvick completed the top 5.
Penalties were the story of several teams’ night as five teams were assessed an additional five seconds for infractions that included lugnuts not tightened (Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Mark Martin and Matt Kenseth) and men over the wall too early (Marcos Ambrose). Jimmie Johnson, Paul Menard, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Regan Smith round out the top 10 while defending race winner Carl Edwards will start 13th.
“It was just a whole team effort - that’s what it boils down to,” said Busch after his run. “The guys unloaded with a really good M&M’s Camry and we just kept playing with some things on what we wanted to do for the race stuff and then what we wanted to do for the qualifying stuff. We knew we’d be pretty quick here; we felt like we had a good shot for the pole. Going out last, that always helps. I think we have a little bit of a system going on here for this place - that’s two in a row for us.”
This is Kyle Busch’s third All-Star Race pole and second in a row.
Feels Like the First Time: Wild and Woolly Truck Race Ends with Lofton and Sharp in Victory Lane
Nobody could accuse the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series of a boring show as the series returned in Charlotte from a month-long hiatus. Drivers traded paint with each other and Charlotte’s retaining walls for every one of the 134 laps in the race, and when the dust settled on the North Carolina Education Lottery 200, it was Justin Lofton standing in Victory :ane for the first time in his CWTS career. It was also the first CWTS win for owner Eddie Sharp, who purchased the team from Kevin Harvick, Inc. when that team shut down at the end of 2011.
Lofton started the night on the outside of row one with polesitter Ty Dillon, but it was hardly a Sunday drive for the 26-year-old Westmoreland, California native, who ran as low as 20th before capturing the victory. Brad Keselowski, Todd Bodine, Jason Leffler, and Ron Hornaday, Jr. rounded out the top-5 finishers in a race that was a roller coaster from the start.
When the green flag dropped, Dillon was able to jump out to the lead, where he stayed for the first 25 laps of the race. Dillon was forced to try to hold his lead through three early restarts. Rookie Brennan Newberry spun his No. 14 on lap three after contact with Jennifer Jo Cobb, bringing out the first yellow flag of the evening. Nobody else was collected, and the lap six restart was solid for Dillon, who jumped out to a quick lead over Joey Coulter, who fell back to fifth.
The green flag was out for just six laps before the caution flew again on lap 12 as Ross Chastain’s engine detonated, causing a five-lap yellow flag for cleanup. Chastain was relegated to a 35th-place finish. Dillon held the led again when the race restarted. Coulter’s rough night continued as he bounced off the wall on lap 20, though the race stayed under green. Meanwhile, the battle for second heated up between James Buescher and Brad Keselowski, and there was jockeying for position throughout the pack.
This time, it lasted just five laps until the caution flew again on lap 24 as rookie John King slapped the wall in the No. 7 truck, bringing the leaders to pit road for the first time. Dillon’s team gambled on a fuel-only stop and won the race off pit road, but the gamble proved to be a losing one as Dillon was quickly shuffled back on the lap 26 restart. Ryan Sieg held the point until lap 30, when James Buescher took over for the next ten laps. That segment of the race included a second spin by Newberry, but this time the rookie was able to get to pit road and no caution flew.
The green flag had its longest appearance of the night from lap 30 to lap 75. Both Dillon and Johnny Sauter had to make unscheduled pit stops during that stretch, Dillon for a flat right front tire and Sauter for a fuel pickup problem that would plague his team until a cable could be replaced, costing Sauter seven laps. By the time the yellow came back out for Newberry’s third spin of the night, the leaders were ready for fresh tires and fuel. Timothy Peters was the leader coming onto pit road, and held it on the way out of the pits. Peters led until lap 84, when Lofton took the point for the first time… just in time for another caution.
Paulie Harraka got loose on lap 85 and bounced off of David Reutimann’s truck before spinning in traffic and collecting Buescher. Lofton elected to stay out, making a huge gamble on fuel mileage. Caution number six helped his cause just five laps later as Nelson Piquet, Jr. slammed the wall on his own and, shedding debris, couldn’t get to pit road.
When the race returned to green, Lofton was able to hold the lead for 19 laps, enduring Newberry’s fourth spin of the night (the race stayed green this time) before Brad Keselowski took it away for six laps, until caution No. 7 which also came courtesy of Piquet finding the wall. Kesleowski was trying to get Dodge its first CWTS win since Dennis Setzer took the checkers at Martinsville in 2008, but Lofton got a tremendous push on the lap 124 restart from Jason White, and was able to take over for the final time, despite having to endure fuel mileage questions and one final restart then Buescher lost his rear bumper bar after contact from Cobb.
Ron Hornaday ran into the back of Keselowski’s truck on the final restart with five laps to go, getting Keselowski loose and taking the battle for second three wide. Keselowski recovered and retook second, but didn’t have enough for Lofton, who cruised to the win as well as the points lead on the strength of five top-10 finishes in five races. Lofton now leads the CWTS standings by one over Timothy Peters. Ty Dillon, James Buescher, and Parker Kligerman round out the top 5 in the points.
“This is amazing. I really don’t even know what to do. This day’s been a long time coming,” said Lofton from Victory Lane. “This entire week, it was one of those weeks where I was just real calm, real excited about the race. It’s just amazing to be able to do it for these guys. I’ve seen all the hard work that Dan (Bormann) puts in, day in and day out. Dan believed in me, taking a chance, quitting a job, coming over to take over as crew chief. He has done an amazing job.”

Lofton Wins His First Camping World Truck Series Race

Justin Lofton Celebrates CMS Win
With Brad Keselowski dogging him to the finish line, and
with just enough fuel to make it to the end of the race, Justin Lofton held off
Brad Keselowski to win Friday night's North Carolina Education Lottery 200
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The victory
was the first in the series for Lofton, who arrived at the finish line .261
seconds ahead of owner/driver Keselowski, who was trying to score his first
NCWTS win. Lofton took over the series lead by one point over Timothy Peters.
Todd Bodine ran third, followed by Jason Leffler and Ron Hornaday Jr. After the
race Keselowski had a heated exchange with Hornaday, stemming from contact
between their trucks on the next-to-last restart with nine laps left.
After a lackluster start to the race, when he quickly
dropped from second to seventh in the space of three laps, Lofton began
learning. "I had had terrible restarts all night," Lofton said after
the race. "The truck was not bad on the very first start of the race -- I
just had that bad a (start) and fell back that far. But the stars aligned, I
figured out what I needed to do, and the best thing is, I outsmarted him
(Keselowski). I think I had some help from Ron Hornaday, when he and Keselowski
got in a little battle. Once I got out front (with four laps left), I knew I
was OK. There was a short amount of laps left that I knew I could stay out
front. I surprised myself, definitely."
Keselowski had just cleared Lofton for the lead entering
Turn 1 on Lap 119 when Nelson Piquet Jr. caused caution for the second straight
time when he pancaked his No. 30 Chevrolet against the Turn 1 wall. But
Keselowski lost the lead on the restart on Lap 125 of 134 when Hornaday, who
lined up behind him, ran into the back of his No. 19 Ram. To Keselowski, the
contact was unjustified. "I came on the radio and asked him, 'Hey, man,
I'll play it cool; just be nice and smooth, and we'll both have great
days," Keselowski said of his communication with Hornaday before the
restart. "Instead he decided to be a jackass and just run me over. And it
cost him what would have been an easy second place, and then it obviously cost
me the win, so we both lost out on the deal."
For Hornaday, who scored his first top-five finish with Joe
Denette Motorsports, time was running short with just nine laps left.
"They stopped and played jackrabbit," Hornaday said of Lofton and
Keselowski, "and somebody got into the back of me, and I just had to go, too.
Sorry about that to him, but we're all looking for spots -- and it's pretty
cool for Joe Denette Motorsports to get a top five." --/-- Lofton held the
lead when caution flew for the eighth time with four laps left for debris in
the form of a bumper bar in the racing groove. Keselowski fell back on the
restart and didn't have time to catch Lofton before the finish. (NASCAR Wire

mandatory green-flag stop at Charlotte Motor Speedway. With a total time of one
minute, 59.112 seconds (136.006 mph) over three laps and the pit stop, Busch
edged Ryan Newman in Friday's time trials for the top starting spot in the race
with a $1 miilion first prize. Newman (135.202 mph) went out second and was the
only driver other than Busch to post a sub-two-minute qualifying effort
(1:59.821). Fastest in Friday's practice, Busch was the last driver to make a
qualifying attempt under the format unique to the All-Star Race. Denny Hamlin
(134.811 mph) claimed the third starting position, followed by Cup points
leader Greg Biffle (134.529 mph) and Kevin Harvick (134.304 mph).
Busch won his third All-Star pole but has never won the
race. Neither has his team, Joe Gibbs Racing. Busch started from the top spot
last year, but Carl Edwards took home the $1 million. Saturday's race will be
contested in five segments, four of 20 laps each followed by a 10-lap dash to
the finish. The winners of the first four segments enter the pits in the top
four spots for a mandatory stop before the final segment. "We unloaded
with a really fast racecar today," Busch said. "The guys made some
minor changes to it to kind of feel it out and make it better where we could.
The guys did a great job there with the pit stop, coming down pit road and
changing four (tires) and then getting back out there and coming back to the
line pretty quick. The rules change every year, so I guess this year you've got
to make sure you win a segment, so you can at least have a shot at starting up
front for the final segment."
Coming to the checkered flag, Kasey Kahne lost control of his
No. 5 Chevrolet and slammed into the Turn 4 wall. Kahne did not post a
qualifying time and will start from the rear of the field in a backup car.
Kahne was on sticker tires after the mandatory pit stop. "I was just
trying to get all I could and went a little too far," Kahne said. Dale
Earnhardt Jr. (191.002 mph) will start third. In addition to the top two
finishers in the Showdown, the winner of the Sprint Fan Vote will transfer to
the All-Star Race.
AJ Allmendinger won the pole for Saturday's Sprint Showdown,
which will send its top two finishers to the main event. Allmendinger covered
the 1.5-mile distance in 28.057 seconds (192.465 mph) to beat Martin Truex Jr.
(191.049 mph) for the top starting spot in the qualifying race. "For me,
it was the perfect lap," said Allmendinger, who ran within inches of the
Turn 4 wall on the money lap. "More than anything, the car stuck to the
racetrack. We struggled a little bit in practice. The (car) had speed in it,
but it wasn't really comfortable. "So (crew chief) Todd Gordon and the
guys went to work, and I felt like that was as perfect as I could run a

AS SOMEBODY THAT REPRESENTS A MILITARY BRAND, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THOSE IN CONGRESS THEY SHOULD BE LOOKING AT OR THINKING ABOUT AS OPPOSED TO BOTTOM-LINE ISSUES?
Earnhardt Jr.: "I think the Republican from Georgia that is heading the bill hasn't even been to a NASCAR race. At least it states that in the article today. I would encourage them to do more homework, get more facts, understand the situation a little more. I know just talking to the (National) Guard, and we went through this before, and talking to them, they can't express to me enough about how much this program helps their recruiting. They are committed to the belief it has a profound effect on their recruiting and their ability to recruit. It's important for them to be visible and to push their brand, and work on their brand giving people an opportunity to learn more about how to get involved in the military. I think their NASCAR sponsorship is a great way to reach a lot of people. We are one of the biggest sports. We've got more people attending races and attending our sport than a lot of other avenues they could be going. I think it's good and healthy for them to be here. I think it works for them or they wouldn't be a part of it."
Q) WOULD YOU INVITE THAT REPUBLICAN FROM GEORGIA TO A RACE?
Earnhardt Jr.: "Yeah, just because he's a Republican from Georgia he should have seen a NASCAR race by now (laughter)."
Q) WHAT WOULD YOU WANT HIM TO SEE?
Earnhardt Jr.: "He could come along and visit with the Guard and talk with the Guard. Talk to the people that are at the particular races and see what the experience is like for them. See how the guard utilizes their program and they're marketing within the sport. If he hasn't been to a race, he's not seen it firsthand. Q) YOU AND (RYAN) NEWMAN DIDN'T HAVE AN ISSUE ON TRACK (LAST WEEKEND IN DARLINGTON) SO WHY DID YOU BUMP HIM AFTER THE RACE?
Busch: "That is where everybody checked-up coming in the garage. I was taking my helmet off so I didn't have a problem with (Ryan) Newman. I didn't have a problem with his crew guys. Then things just really got out of control in a hurry."
Q) WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU LEFT PIT ROAD?
Busch: "I was just trying to beat the pace car out. I didn't think anything of it other than we have put up a good fight this whole year. Trying to just work as hard as we've worked, trying to complete the day and get those top-10 finishes. These guys work harder than anybody else in this garage. This No. 51 Phoenix Racing team, I love them to death. They have my back, I've got theirs and we just wanted to finish on the lead lap. I was trying to get off pit road as quick as I could. Newman, he left his pit, I don't know, a good 10 seconds before us. I didn't think there was any reason to think that any crew guys were in danger. One guy has a problem with it and it just escalated from there."
Q) DID YOU FEEL LIKE THE FINE WAS JUSTIFIED?
Busch: "The fine is what it is. There was the problem of me not lining-up properly when NASCAR told me to get to be the last car on the track. You have to do that when you pit too soon. That is just a normal penalty that you have to adhere to. I was, but everybody kept waving me by. When everybody is waving you by and NASCAR is yelling in your ear to go to the back. It's like I'm confused on where I'm supposed to line-up. Whether it was pit road, whether it was not lining up where I was supposed to be, whether it was the incident on pit road when everybody checked-up and I was taking my helmet off. Which (Ryan) Newman said that he thought that was a lie, that is the honest truth. Newman and I were friends. We were great teammates. He needs to check his trophy case on the Daytona 500 trophy that I helped him get years ago. We have always been great friends. There was no need for his comments afterwards. He knew that his Southern 500 didn't go the way that he wanted it to. At the end of the nigh everybody is hot, pissed off. The Daytona 500 is a big race; Darlington is just as big of an event. A lot of people get excited for it. I wanted to finish in the top-10 and we didn't get that top-10 finish. It was a tough night that all went bad in a hurry. For that I apologize to NASCAR for them to have to make a decision on penalizing me. It is what it is, I will move on. Is my strike zone bigger than others? Yeah, it might be a little bigger than others but I don't have a problem with it. I've got a great group of guys here that I'm working with on this Phoenix team to go there and put together the results that we can. We need to get those good solid finishes like we know we are capable of."
Q) HOW DO YOU TAKE RYAN'S (NEWMAN) COMMENTS AFTERWARDS WHERE HE MADE THE COMMENT ABOUT CHEMICAL IMBALANCE?
Busch: "Yeah, we're friends. He was agitated just like I was after a good day gone bad. He was just in the emotion of it. With him making the comments that he did, he was a little out of line as well for the heat of the moment. "
Q) NO LONGER FRIENDS NOW OR DO YOU NEED TO TALK WITH HIM?
Busch: "Well I think that we are both looking at the same scenario coming up here in these next few summer months."
Q) SINCE YOU AND RYAN (NEWMAN) ARE BOTH UNSETTLED RIGHT NOW FOR 2013, DO YOU THINK WITH HIS COMMENTS HE CAN DISCREDIT YOU IN THE PUBLIC MARKET?
Busch: "This is good for our sport. This is WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) type action."
Q) ARE THERE THINGS YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?
Busch: "I would have done my best to keep the car off the wall and not get that flat tire and to bring out car home 10th. That was a tough race for us to race in the top-five like we did for a little while we were a seventh to eighth place car genuinely all night. Pit stops put us back to 15th a few times, but I wasn't upset about that when that happened."
Q) WHAT ABOUT POST RACE?
Busch: "Those things happen because of what happen during the race. I'm passionate about what I do and I want to complete those days when we are running well. Just like when we were at Talladega. To get spun out with just a few laps to go, it's like man what else can happen to us in the last few laps of a race."
Q) DO YOU PERSONALLY PAY THE $50,000 OUT OF YOUR POCKET?
Busch: "Absolutely, I have all through my career. I've been fined probably the most out of any driver and I've probably paid it out of my pocket more than any driver."
Q) WERE YOU SURPRISED AT WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE CREW GUY BECAUSE RYAN (NEWMAN) HAS ALREADY COME OVER TO THE CAR AND WALKED AWAY?
Busch: "Yeah, it was surprising that guy was just as excited as anybody else. That is the passion that all of us have in this sport. Did I mean to drive through their pit box? Heck there could have been 42 other guys pitted next to us, but it just happened to be the guy that spun around in our same incident. It wasn't anything that I tried to do and he was just excited about things. I was trying to be the man and get my car back to the garage. Instead I could have walked away like (Ryan) Newman walked away."
Q) DID YOU FEEL LIKE YOU DROVE THROUGH THEIR PIT BOX RECKLESSLY? THAT IS WHAT NASCAR FINED YOU FOR.

sources have told FOXSports.com that one of the latest candidates for
Dodge Motorsports could be Michael Andretti, owner of Andretti Autosport.
With Roger Penske's departure from Dodge at the end of the 2012 season,
the door is open for new organizations to enter the fold. In addition to
Andretti, Richard Petty Motorsports and Furniture Row Racing are the top
contenders to field Dodges in 2013. An announcement regarding Dodge's
lineup, as well as its engine building plans, could come as early as the
weekend of the NASCAR races at Michigan, June 15-17. Andretti currently
fields three full-time teams in the IndyCar Series with drivers Marco
Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe. It is unlikely that
Andretti would use open-wheel talent for a NASCAR venture. Two names
mentioned as possibilities to drive for the team are Ryan Newman and Kurt
Busch, both of whom have established relationships with Dodge.(FoxSports)(5-18-2012)
UPDATE: No one with Andretti nor Dodge would confirm the talks but neither would deny the possibility when contacted in the past several weeks as rumors spread through the NASCAR community of Andretti's interest. A Dodge spokesman said the manufacturer was still in the process of evaluating opportunities for next season and could not comment.(Sporting News)(5-18-2012) - Military sponsorships could go away..if: The sponsorships of #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. [National Guard] and #39-Ryan Newman [U.S. Army] (as well as the Air Force deal with #43-Aric Almirola) could be in jeopardy as military sponsorships of motorsports have come into question in the U.S. House of Representatives. The House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment Thursday to the 2013 defense appropriations bill that would prohibit funding of sponsorships of professional sports or sporting events. The amendment, passed by a voice vote and sponsored by Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), states that: "None of the funds made available in this act may be used to sponsor professional or semiprofessional motorsports, fishing, wrestling or other sports." The bill still needs to be passed by the House and then the provision would have to make it through any negotiations with leaders from the Senate and its defense appropriations bill. Last year, McCollum introduced an amendment banning motorsports sponsorships on the House floor and it was voted down 281-148.(Sporting News and USA Today)(5-18-2012)

- Matt Carter to practice #87 at Iowa: While NASCAR driver Matt Carter continues to pursue sponsorship in order to return to the NASCAR Nationwide Series scene, he has been hustling in the garage area over the past month working in a variety of roles with Go Green Racing (GGR). This weekend, the Denver, North Carolina native will practice and qualify the #87 AM / FM Energy Wood Pellet Stoves Toyota Camry for NEMCO Motorsports at Iowa Speedway. The 31-year old will temporally pinch-hit for car owner Joe Nemechek who will be partaking in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series activities at Charlotte Speedway. While the avid racecar driver won't be behind the wheel for race day, he will spot for the former NASCAR Nationwide Series champion.(Carter PR)(5-17-2012)
- Villeneuve returns to the #22 for 2 races: One of the most accomplished racers in recent history will join Penske Racing for two upcoming road course races on the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule. Former world champion driver Jacques Villeneuve will compete behind the wheel of the #22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger in the NNS races at Road America (June 23) and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (August 18). He will return to the Dodge at these venues for the second-consecutive season. Villeneuve has made 10 NASCAR starts over the past five seasons, including seven in the Nationwide Series. He owns his top NASCAR finish at both courses when he finished third at Montreal in 2010 and Road America in 2011. In addition, he led the field to the green flag in last year's event at Montreal. Competing at both Road America and Montreal, Villeneuve will return to two tracks where he's enjoyed some impressive history. He has already been to Victory Lane at Road America as he won the CART Series races there in both 1994 and 1995. He will then race in his hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the circuit named after his famous father, former Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve. (Penseke Racing)(5-17-2012)

- Lofton wins at Charlotte: With less than ten laps remaining, Justin Lofton, driving the #6-College Complete.com Chevrolet for Eddie Sharp Racing, retook the lead from #19-Brad Keselowski; surviving two restarts, to win the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This is Lofton's first victory in 55 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts. Keselowski finished second. Rounding out the top ten were; #11-Todd Bodine, #18-Jason Leffler, #9-Ron Hornaday Jr., #23-Jason White, #22-Joey Coulter, #27-Jeb Burton, #17-Timothy Peters, #3-Ty Dillon.
