GM Announcement of Holden Commodore Exportation Imminent

Australia's Drive is reporting that Holden, General Motors' Australian subsidiary, is expected to announce as soon as today that exportation of the rear-wheel drive Holden Commodore to the U.S. will begin early next year.  The Commodore is expected to be the basis of a new model in the Chevrolet lineup, likely to be called the SS Performance or just SS.

This new model will be the new entry that Chevrolet fields in the Sprint Cup Series for 2013 when the second generation COT's debut next February.  Previously, Chevrolet had already announced that they would not be continuing with the Impala beyond the end of this season in Sprint Cup, and that their 2013 challenger would be a new model to their lineup.  In addition, a brand-new Impala for the 2014 model year was unveiled last month at the New York Auto Show.

Such a move is important for Holden due to the fact that demand for the Commodore in Australia is waning.  Last year, the Mazda3 eclipsed the Commodore to become the highest selling car in Australia, ending a 15 year reign for Holden's full-size offering.

Drive also reports that the announcement has been moved up by quite a few weeks due to a number of leaks.  For example, the OnStar website briefly displayed a list of future models that would be equipped with OnStar through the 2014 model year.  This included the SS Performance and a new ELR model from Cadillac.

This will not be the first time that Holden has exported the Commodore to the U.S.  The Commodore was recently exported to the U.S. as the Pontiac G8, a Grand Prix replacement.  However, the bankruptcy of General Motors and the shutdown of Pontiac ended that program after only two years in 2009.

The Commodore is built on GM's full size Zeta platform.  A stretched version of it is currently utilized for the Holden Caprice.  That car is currently being sold in the U.S. as the Caprice PPV, a vehicle officially available only to Police Departments (although a couple of dealerships have stocked civilian versions).  The Commodore also has "Ute" (think the El Camino) and wagon variants that could also come to the U.S. at a future date.  The ute was supposed to come to the U.S. as the Pontiac G8 ST, but the brand was shutdown before that could happen.

Rumors have placed the SS Performance as a V8-only vehicle with a limited production run.  However, that could be subject to change due to the realities of the U.S. market.

SPEED Energy Joins Eddie Sharp Racing

On Wednesday, Eddie Sharp Racing announced a new partnership with SPEED Energy, the energy drink brand created by Robby Gordon.  According to a picture on the SPEED Energy website, the SPEED Energy logo will appear on the deck lid of the No. 6 CollegeComplete.com Chevrolet driven by Justin Lofton in Friday night's North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Lofton is very pleased to have Gordon's energy drink onboard this weekend.

"I am really excited about having SPEED Energy Drink onboard," Lofton said.  "The new partnership with Robby Gordon and SPEED is more than just a decal on the truck.  I have known Robby for a long time, racing against him in the desert."

Gordon, who has focused much of his 2012 on racing in the desert, is very happy to work with a kindred spirit in Lofton.

"With regards to Justin joining up with SPEED Energy, we're really excited about it," Gordon said.  "Justin has done an awesome job in the Camping World Truck Series and I've known him and his family in off-road [racing] for years.  His dad was always fast in the desert and Justin's ability is awesome.  I'm looking forward to him having a good run this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway and then racing again in the Best of the Desert Series.  We've been having a lot of fun racing together and [I'm] excited for us and his production company to start working on future projects together."

In addition to the sponsorship on the No. 6 Chevrolet, Lofton and Gordon will team up on future projects via Weekend Warriors Productions, a production company that Lofton is a co-owner of.  That production company actually sponsored Lofton in a 2010 Nationwide Series race at Texas Motor Speedway (the car was owned by a combination of Lofton and his Camping World Truck Series team at the time, Red Horse Racing).

Entering Charlotte, Lofton is third in Camping World Truck Series points with two top-5 finishes and top-10's in all four races.

Angela Cope to Make Season Debut for SR2 Motorsports at Charlotte

SR2 Motorsports announced on Tuesday that Angela Cope will drive for the team in the History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 26.  The team's press release indicates that Cope will be driving a No. 00 Chevrolet.  This will be a second entry in addition to the team's No. 24 that has been shared this season by Benny Gordon, Casey Roderick, Tanner Berryhill, and (via partnership with RAB Racing with Brack Maggard) John Wes Townley.  As a result, Cope will have to qualify on speed.

Sponsorship will be provided by Highland Wealth Advisors and Luichiny Shoes.  Cope has an existing relationship with Luichiny since Angela, along with her twin sister Amber, sell Luichiny shoes (along with other products) at their own online store, Pink Candy Boutique.
Bad News for NASCAR From Washington

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series already has teams that are in search of funding and two more could join the search for 2013. According to The Hill, a global affairs blog, the House Appropriations Committee approved a defense bill that would remove sports funding from the budget. The two teams that could be most affected by the bill would be the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 39 driven by Ryan Newman, which has Army as a primary sponsor, and the Hendrick Racing No. 88 of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., where the National Guard serves as primary sponsor.

The bill was passed on a voice vote Thursday by the committee and included an amendment that would eliminate the military’s sponsorship of NASCAR and other sporting events. The amendment was originally proposed by Rep. Betty McCoilum (D-Minn.) last year but did not pass. Thursday, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) took up the proposal, which prohibits military funding for semi-professional and professional sporting events.

Kingston said on Thursday that eliminating the sports funding, which is used by recruiting for the military, was “a great place to send a signal” as the military cuts its budgets along with 100,000 troops. Defense subcommittee chairman Bill Young (R-Fla.) said he did not support the amendment because the military needs to be visible to the community, but the amendment passed on a voice vote.

Additionally, the House defense budget--which was approved at $608 billion--sits $3 billion more than the proposed defense budget by President Obama. That means as the bill goes to the Senate Appropriations committee, it is unlikely that more money could become available, leaving both Newman and Earnhardt, Jr. with sponsorship holes to fill.

McCollum wrote on Twitter earlier this month that the National Guard’s sponsorship for NASCAR in the past three years has been $103 million. The bill will next go to a full vote in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and then to the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The bill could also be bad news for IndyCar’s Panther Racing’s J.R. Hildebrand, who is sponsored by the National Guard and NHRA seven-time top fuel champion Tony Schumacher, who is sponsored by the Army.

NASCAR, Twitter to Make Announcement

NASCAR and Twitter are scheduled to make a special joint announcement today at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Those scheduled to be on hand include NASCAR Chief Marketing Officer Steve Phelps and Twitter Head of Sports and Entertainment Omid Ashtari.

Twitter came into the NASCAR spotlight during the season-opening Daytona 500, which was run on a Monday night due to weather delays. During an extended red flag for Juan Pablo Montoya's infamous jet dryer crash, Brad Keselowski spent his time with nothing to do but sit and wait sending tweets from his car; he picked up 135,000 followers in about an hour. He later said the reason he had a phone with him was to let his mother know he was OK if he was in an accident.

Keselowski, who has two Sprint Cup victories this year, is also scheduled to be at the press conference along with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Nelson Piquet, Jr. Keselowski was up to 263,205 followers late Thursday afternoon.

McDowell, Presbyterian Healthcare team up for Coca-Cola 600

Michael McDowell wants people stay healthy and so does Presbyterian Healthcare, so the two have combined to bring attention to healthcare issues for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series May 27 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Presbyterian Heatlhcare, based in Huntersville, N.C., will have its logo on the Phil Parsons-owned No. 98 for the night race, the longest on the Sprint Cup circuit.

"Michael, who lives in Huntersville, believes in what Presbyterian Healthcare is doing to help make our communities healthier," said Mark Billings, president and CEO of Presbyterian Healthcare. "He has used Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville for care several times so this partnership is more personal for him."

The goal of the partnership is to bring attention to the need for people to schedule regular health screenings to help save lives. The car will display the Presbyterian Health website, www.healthpitstop.com, which will help people understand why screenings are important and how they should be based on a person’s age and health history.

The partnership will be formally announced at a 1 PM press conference at Presbyterian Hospital in Huntersville where the show car will be unveiled. McDowell is currently 38th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings and has started 10 of the season’s 11 races.

Johnson's No. 48 Team Dethrones Hamlin's No. 11
The No. 48 team of Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson saved the best for last Thursday night. Posting its fastest time in the final round of the Sprint Pit Crew Challenge, the No. 48 NASCAR Sprint Cup team dethroned the two-time defending champion No. 11 crew of Joe Gibbs racing driver Denny Hamlin. In a competition that includes simultaneously changing front and rear tires, fueling and jacking four different common cars and then pushing a team car across the finish line, Johnson's crew accomplished the task in 22.239 seconds to edge Hamlin's over-the-wall gang (22.533 seconds) in the finals. Gas man Brandon Harder, front tire changer Dave Collins, front tire carrier RJ Barnette, rear tire changer Calvin Teague, rear tire carrier Matt Tyrell, and jackman TJ Ford were the winning team for the 48, which finished second last year. "In this discipline, the athleticism and training really pays off," Johnson said after the event. "We made a big effort to get full-fledged athletes who did nothing but work on their pit stops and disciplines. And then they focused on this -- the distance to run, the car push and all that -- and I think it just shows how strong they are, how physically able they are to get the job done."
The victory was the first for the No. 48 team in the eight-year history of the event held at Time Warner Cable Arena. The team won $80,675, a $10,000 increase over last year's prize money. In addition, the Jimmie Johnson foundation received a donation of $9,169 from the NASCAR Foundation. The team also won the right to select pit stall No. 1 for Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race, which pays $1 million to win. "I think it's going to be a big advantage, especially if you can get out there and win one of those first couple of segments," said crew chief Chad Knaus, who sprayed his team with champagne after the victory. The winners of the first four 20-lap segments of the All-Star Race enter pit road 1-2-3-4 for a mandatory stop before the final 10-lap dash to the finish.

Conserving their strength for the finals, the No. 48 crewmen employed a strategy of stopping the push and letting the car roll to the finish whenever they had an insurmountable margin. That approach worked impeccably en route to the finals, setting up the confrontation with the champions of the previous two years. With a clean run in 22.453 seconds, the No. 48 team cruised into the finals by winning a head-to-head matchup against Matt Kenseth's No. 17Â crew (23.228 seconds). The No. 11 team earned its spot in the title match with a semifinal run in 22.869 seconds, beating the No. 88 crew of Dale Earnhardt Jr. (23.567 seconds). Whenever the 48 team had a clear win, Teague would signal his mates to stop pushing. "I saw that, too," Johnson said. "I wasn't involved in the training that went into it, but I think they were trying to conserve energy, and once they felt like they had a heat won, they just kind of backed off."

The event also crowned individual winners in each of the skill categories. Jeff Kerr of Kasey Kahne's No. 5 team won the jack man competition for the third time. Tom Lampe of Kyle Busch's No. 18 crew won the individual competition for gas men with an event-record time of 8.610 seconds. Kerr said the secret to winning the competition was "to learn to deal with pressure without making a mistake. It the same thing when you go across pit road. The pit stop when you're running first and the pit stop when you're running 43rd are two totally different pit stops. "The people that can do it under pressure are the people who can do it when it counts, and those are the people you want on your team."

Representing Jeff Burton's No. 31 team, the front tire changer/tire carrier combination of Tim Sheets and JD Holcomb were fastest in their category with a record time of 13.615 seconds. Changer Jake Seminara and carrier Kenny Barber took home individual honors on the rear tires in a record 13.073 seconds. Each individual winner received $10,000 for his efforts. This year more than ever, the Pit Crew Challenge was a perfect lead-in to All-Star weekend, given the emphasis on pit crew performance both in Friday's unique Cup qualifying session and Saturday's Sprint All-Star Race. A pit stop is an integral part of time trials, and the mandatory pit stop precedes the final 10-lap segment of the All-Star dash for $1 million. "We love that," Seminara said. "I think it was two years ago we came in the pits fifth on the last pit stop and came out second, I believe, and put him in position to win the race (though a late crash cost Busch a chance for the victory). (NASCAR Wire Service)

Richard Childress Inducted Into NMPA Hall of Fame
Legendary NASCAR team owner Richard Childress was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame last night at a gala event in Concord, N.C. The 14-time championship-winning team owner was inducted along with former NASCAR driver Ricky Rudd. Rudd took RCR to its first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory, in 1983 at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway. It was the second hall of fame ceremony in the past two weeks for Childress, who was inducted May 3 into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on the grounds of Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. "It's is a great honor for me to carry the banner for all of the talented people who have made RCR what it's become over the past 40-plus years," said Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. "To go into the National Motorsports Press Association with Ricky Rudd is very special for me personally because of his important contributions to both RCR and the sport of NASCAR racing as a whole. I had a dream as a kid of winning races and championships but I never thought it would take me to the places it has in my life."
The National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame is located on the grounds of Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The inaugural class was inducted in 1965 which has become a Who's Who in the world of NASCAR. Childress and Rudd were the 79th and 80th inductees. RCR has earned more than 200 victories in NASCAR competition, including 100 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. It has earned six championships in the NASCAR Cup Series with the legendary Dale Earnhardt, five in the Nationwide Series and two in the Camping World Truck Series. Its 2012 lineup includes three teams each in the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. In 2011, RCR earned championships in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, with drivers Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon, respectively. The Dillons are the grandsons of Richard and Judy Childress.

  • Andretti to NASCAR...with Dodge?: Multiple sources have told FOXSports.com that one of the latest candidates for Dodge Motorsports could be Michael Andretti, owner of Andretti Autosport. With Roger Penske's departure from Dodge at the end of the 2012 season, the door is open for new organizations to enter the fold. In addition to Andretti, Richard Petty Motorsports and Furniture Row Racing are the top contenders to field Dodges in 2013. An announcement regarding Dodge's lineup, as well as its engine building plans, could come as early as the weekend of the NASCAR races at Michigan, June 15-17. Andretti currently fields three full-time teams in the IndyCar Series with drivers Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe. It is unlikely that Andretti would use open-wheel talent for a NASCAR venture. Two names mentioned as possibilities to drive for the team are Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch, both of whom have established relationships with Dodge.(FoxSports)(5-18-2012)
  • Military sponsorships could go away..if: The sponsorships of #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. [National Guard] and #39-Ryan Newman [U.S. Army] (as well as the Air Force deal with #43-Aric Almirola) could be in jeopardy as military sponsorships of motorsports have come into question in the U.S. House of Representatives. The House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment Thursday to the 2013 defense appropriations bill that would prohibit funding of sponsorships of professional sports or sporting events. The amendment, passed by a voice vote and sponsored by Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), states that: "None of the funds made available in this act may be used to sponsor professional or semiprofessional motorsports, fishing, wrestling or other sports." The bill still needs to be passed by the House and then the provision would have to make it through any negotiations with leaders from the Senate and its defense appropriations bill. Last year, McCollum introduced an amendment banning motorsports sponsorships on the House floor and it was voted down 281-148.(Sporting News)(5-18-2012)

Matt Carter to practice #87 at Iowa: While NASCAR driver Matt Carter continues to pursue sponsorship in order to return to the NASCAR Nationwide Series scene, he has been hustling in the garage area over the past month working in a variety of roles with Go Green Racing (GGR). This weekend, the Denver, North Carolina native will practice and qualify the #87 AM / FM Energy Wood Pellet Stoves Toyota Camry for NEMCO Motorsports at Iowa Speedway. The 31-year old will temporally pinch-hit for car owner Joe Nemechek who will be partaking in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series activities at Charlotte Speedway. While the avid racecar driver won't be behind the wheel for race day, he will spot for the former NASCAR Nationwide Series champion.(Carter PR)(5-17-2012)

Villeneuve returns to the #22 for 2 races: One of the most accomplished racers in recent history will join Penske Racing for two upcoming road course races on the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule. Former world champion driver Jacques Villeneuve will compete behind the wheel of the #22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger in the NNS races at Road America (June 23) and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (August 18). He will return to the Dodge at these venues for the second-consecutive season. Villeneuve has made 10 NASCAR starts over the past five seasons, including seven in the Nationwide Series. He owns his top NASCAR finish at both courses when he finished third at Montreal in 2010 and Road America in 2011. In addition, he led the field to the green flag in last year's event at Montreal. Competing at both Road America and Montreal, Villeneuve will return to two tracks where he's enjoyed some impressive history. He has already been to Victory Lane at Road America as he won the CART Series races there in both 1994 and 1995. He will then race in his hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the circuit named after his famous father, former Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve. (Penseke Racing)(5-17-2012)

Sweet returns to the #38: Brad Sweet will return to the seat of the #38 Great Clips machine this weekend for the Nationwide Series' first of two stops at Iowa Speedway. This event will mark the Grass Valley, Calif.-native's third NNS start of the season after proving impressive in his first race at Auto Club Speedway where he brought home a sixth-place finish. In his second start at Talladega, Sweet ran solidly inside the top-10 before being collected in a late-race accident. While Sweet has not competed at Iowa Speedway in NASCAR competition, he knows the place well having wheeled Silver Crown cars and midgets around the 7/8-mile track throughout his open-wheel career.(Turner Motorsports)(5-17-2012)

Newberry to promote Jeremy Staat Fdn at Charlotte: The NTS Motorsports Nascar Camping World Truck Team with Driver Brennan Newberry at the wheel will not have the typical sponsor that you would expect to see in the series upcoming race in Charlotte, NC . To support awareness for our war veterans, the #14 truck will be adorned with the Jeremy Staat Foundation. Jeremy Staat, a former NFL player and veteran, along with Wesley Barrientos, a purple heart recipient and paraplegic (having lost both of his legs while in the line of duty), set out on a 100 day - 4,163 mile bicycle ride starting February 19th 2012 . Wesley and Jeremy will be joining the #14 NTS Motorsports team this Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the race and then quickly resume to their bikes in order to a make an on time arrival at Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 28th. Back To Business At Charlotte
05-18-2012 | Tom Jensen, SPEED.com
After a four-week layoff, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rolls into Charlotte Motor Speedway with a wide-open battle expected in tonight’s North Carolina Education Lottery 200.
Taking The Point
05-17-2012 | Mike Hembree, SPEED.com
For Timothy Peters, it's time to push "go." But, in a Camping World Truck Series season that's shorter by three races than last year, it's almost always "go" time. Peters carries the series point lead into Friday night's North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
