New Year… New Nose… New Questions… New Champion?
by Mike Irwin

Everyone is already anticipating the start of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. And why not?

It’s a brand new year, with a brand new race car nose (no braces). The question on everyone’s mind is… will the Jimmie Johnson/Chad Knaus combination continue to dominate the championship scene?

LOUDON, N.H. (Jan. 7, 2011) - New Hampshire Motor Speedway will make its movie debut Saturday in the made-for-television family drama "Changing Plans," which airs at 8 p.m. (EST) on FOX. Jeff Burton, a veteran NASCAR driver and four-time winner at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, worked with the cast and crew in filming "The Magic Mile's" scene during the SYLVANIA 300 weekend in September. The movie, presented by Procter & Gamble and Wal-Mart, demonstrates how lives can change with a single phone call. After finding out her best friend from college was killed in an accident, Sally Danville (Brooke White, "American Idol") learns she has been named the legal guardian of her friend's

NASCAR Isn’t The Only Thing Down on ESPN

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 11:09 PM PST

The way the media, TV executives and even NASCAR executives spoke at the end of the season, you would have thought the world was crashing in on us. Every week there were stories of 20% and 25% ratings declines on ESPN. Everyone with a platform to do so was asking why people we’re tuning out in droves. It didn’t make sense. And ESPN stood firm that the move from ABC to the cable network shouldn’t make a difference. That surely couldn’t have contributed. Or could it?

Consider this:

The Rose Bowl’s move to cable drew ESPN’s highest preliminary rating for a non-NFL game.

TCU’s 21-19 win over Wisconsin on Saturday earned an 11.7 overnight rating, down 15 percent from the 13.8 for Ohio State-Oregon on ABC last year.

That’s strange. The highest preliminary rating for a non-NFL game, but still down 15 percent from the network (it’s the lowest overnight rating for the Rose Bowl since 2003)? I wonder what happened? Perhaps it’s that the audience for ESPN is smaller than ABC? And wouldn’t you know it:

ESPN is available in about 13 percent fewer homes than ABC.

Those numbers (15% and 13%) sure match up well. As a side note, it’s worth noting ESPN/ABCs only NASCAR ratings increase this season was a race that was moved from ESPN to ABC – Bristol.

There are many out there who have worked to debunk the effect of moving sports from the networks to cable (I apologize for not being able to find one of the articles right now). And there may be some good arguments, but for whatever reason the evidence continues not to support it – or maybe people don’t like watching sports on cable as much as on the networks.

Now obviously ratings were probably still down this season for NASCAR on ESPN. But it makes a little more sense that the ESPN declines were more in line with the other broadcast networks. 10-12% is a lot better, and a lot easier to understand, than a sudden 20-27% decline.

While there certainly is a story to be told about ratings declines, I continue to believe the anomalous numbers we saw with ESPN had to do more with the move than with the product. If the audience information is excluded, the year-over-year numbers absolutely look worse than they are.

I know this is going to continue to be a popular storyline in 2011 – and let’s be honest, it will be a storyline until they bottom out – it’s my hope though that this storyline and others can be reported with more clarity and candor in 2011. While NASCAR does have its issues, let’s keep in perspective this is still the second most watched sport in America.

         Gordon Disqualified From Dakar Rally

Robby Gordon had right front wheel bearing issues before the start of the timed special, costing him about 5 hours. He completed the stage, but because he was late to the special, he is disqualified from the rally. "This is not fair" said Gordon after the stage, "I can´t understand the descision of the Organizer ASO. During the stage the officials told me that we can still run, after the stage they told me I´m disqulified. I tried everything to start again." The technical problems happened during the liasion, Gordon was waiting for the second Hummer of Eliseo Salazar and his Service-crew. But Salazar was still in the timed stage, the service trucks had to wait after all participants were in the stage because to fasten the border-crossing between Argentina and Chile. "I don´t know if I will come back next year" said a disappointed Gordon. The second Hummer with Eliseo Salazar is still competing in 81st overall position. (marathonrally.com)

Robby Gordon Improves In Stage Three

Robby Gordon finished 15th in the third stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally as he improved four spots to 17th overall but dropped to 92 minutes behind the leaders Tuesday. Gordon, piloting a Robby Gordon Motorsports Hummer, lost another 25 minutes to leader Carlos Sainz in the 310-mile trek split into two timed sections from San Miguel de Tucuman to San Salvador de JuJuy in Argentina. Gordon clocked in at 4 hours, 7 minutes. The 2011 route consists of 13 timed stages over 14 days. The route Wednesday crosses the Argentina-Chile border to Calama with the timed portion covering 128 miles. (scenedaily.com)

Robby Gordon Has Mechanical Problems In Dakar Rally

Robby Gordon hit a rock and his car required nearly an hour in repairs late in the second stage of the Dakar Rally, and the NASCAR driver now finds himself 21st overall and nearly 67 minutes behind the leaders in the provisional overall standings. Gordon, driving a Hummer built by his Robby Gordon Motorsports shop that also houses his Sprint Cup operation, finished 47th in the second stage as he needed 4 hours, 7 minutes to complete the 201-mile route from Cordoba to San Miguel de Tucuman in Argentina. He is now 1 hour, 6 minutes and 55 seconds behind the leaders. The third stage will be Tuesday from San Miguel de Tucuman to San Salvador de Jujuy. The timed portion of the route, split into two sections, entails 310 miles.(scenedaily.com)

Robby Gordon Eighth In First Dakar Stage

NASCAR driver Robby Gordon finished eighth in the first stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday as he finished 11 minutes, 4 seconds behind leader Carlos Sainz in the route from Victoria to Cordoba in Argentina. The 138-mile stage was the first of 13 timed stages of the event, which opened Saturday with a ceremonial parade stage. Gordon, driving a Robby Gordon Motorsports Hummer, finished the route in 2 hours, 29 minutes and 36 seconds. The second stage will be Monday with a 201-mile route from Cordoba to San Miguel de Tucuman. “Tomorrow’s stage is supposed to go through the mountains, which are not good for us for two reasons: First, the Hummers are not turbo-charged then the course is a little narrow," Gordon said. "They did say that we should encounter some bumps, which could be good for us.”(scenedaily.com)

Catch-Can Man Is Gone In NASCAR

Pit stops in the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will take on a new – and probably slower – process this season because of the elimination of a position that has been a part of NASCAR for decades. Following up on a successful run in the Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR decided in the offseason to move to self-venting gas cans in the Cup and Nationwide series this season, eliminating the need for the catch-can man, whose main task was to stand at the rear of the car during pit stops and catch overflow gas through a vent as the gas man refueled the vehicle. The self-venting system eliminates that need, but, like most things in NASCAR, it’s not quite that simple. Most teams also used the catch-can crewman to make track-bar and wedge adjustments. Now, in most cases, the rear tire carrier will be taking on those duties. Only six crew people will be allowed over the wall. That change – and the fact that the new cans dump fuel a little more slowly – probably will make pit stops marginally slower, and the teams that adjust to the changes more quickly will be able to gain time on pit road...MORE AT...(speedtv.com)

Michael Waltrip’s Comedy Garage

Ready to Hit The Road In Kansas City, Canada and Las Vegas

Two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip knows what it is like to perform in front of huge crowds on the NASCAR circuit. But in the next few weeks Waltrip will trade in the steering wheel for a microphone and audience as he takes Michael Waltrip’s Comedy Garage on the road.

Top flight comedians Henry Cho and John Reep headline a night of standup comedy that includes a routine by Waltrip.

“This is something totally different from what I am used to,” said Waltrip. “In a race car I am in my element and I’m comfortable. When you give me a microphone and tell me I have to stand up in front of a lot of people and be funny on purpose, that makes me nervous. I’m funny accidentally. The definition of stand-up comedy is being funny on purpose.

“It’s a great challenge and something that is a lot of fun. The people that do it for a living sure have my respect. I hope everyone will come out and give us a chance to entertain them.”

Kansas City’s Ameristar Casino will host the first Comedy Garage of 2011 on Jan. 21. The show moves to the Colosseum at Caesars Windsor in Ontario, Canada on Jan. 22.  The Mirage will host shows on March 4 and 5 in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas                       March 4 & 5       http://www.mirage.com/entertainment/michael-waltrip-comedy-garage.aspx

The Comedy Garage is just one of many endeavors for Waltrip in the coming weeks. He plans to race in the Dubai 24 Hours sports car race with Michael Waltrip Racing co-owner Rob Kauffman Jan. 13-15.

Waltrip’s first book “In the Blink of an Eye” marking the tenth anniversary of his 2001 Daytona 500 victory hits the shelves on Feb. 1. “DALE, DAYTONA AND THE DAY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING,” is the book’s subtitle describing Waltrip’s minute-by-minute account of the day that saw him break a 0 for 462 losing streak and reach the pinnacle of stock car racing by winning the Daytona 500.

Unknown to Waltrip, seconds before he took his first checkered flag his friend and car owner Dale Earnhardt died in a turn four accident. Waltrip tells the story that only he can tell chronicling his struggle to come to grips with the aftermath and build a successful career and race team.

  •  Northeastern Supply sponsoring Leffler: One of NASCAR's longest standing sponsors, the Northeastern Supply Company, will return to Nationwide Series support for the 18th consecutive year in 2011 when it returns to Turner Motorsports, driver Jason Leffler and the #38 Great Clips Chevy. The highly successful regional distributor of plumbing, heating, HVAC, water systems and hardware products will again provide associate sponsorship to a NASCAR team that began way back in 1994 in the Busch Grand National Series. 2011 will mark the company's fourth straight season with Turner Motorsports, previously Braun Racing, and in support of Leffler and his Great Clips race team. • Carpenter Joins TriStar: TriStar Motorsports announces the appointment of Rick Carpenter as General Manager for their NASCAR Nationwide Series effort. Carpenter replaces Keith Barnwell in this position after his departure from the team last week. Carpenter is a veteran within NASCAR serving many capacities in the sport. Prior to joining TriStar Motorsports he served as General Manager for Rusty Wallace's Nationwide Series operation at RWI Racing. Rick has also held management positions at Penske Racing and Jasper Motorsports. TriStar Motorsports will field three entries this coming season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with McClure piloting the #14 Hefty Chevy as well as the team fielding the #19 and #44 Chevy. The team will be making future announcements on drivers and sponsors for the other two entries.(Integrity Sports Marketing)(1-6-2011)
  • Baker-Curb Racing still in business: UPDATE: A statement from Gary Baker: "Contrary to rumors circulating, Baker Curb Racing has not ceased operations. We did temporarily layoff some employees while we map our 2011 plans. As with any other offseason, we also continue selling excess and outdated race equipment. As of today we are still operating with the intent of racing at Daytona next month and continue discussions with several prospective sponsors. We remain optimistic that we will have our 2011 sponsorships finalized within the next 10 days."(Baker-Curb)(1-5-2011)
UPDATE: Baker Curb Racing co-owner Gary Baker is denying internet reports that his race team is closing its doors, telling Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody that he is confident the team will compete at Daytona with at least one - and possibly two - cars. Baker said he was not contacted by anyone to confirm the erroneous reports, adding, "I got a phone call the other night from someone who read on the internet that we were padlocked. At the time, I was in a meeting, talking about our ability to field two cars next year if both the sponsors we are talking to come through. As of today, we do not have a sponsor signed for even the first car. But we are very, very hot in conversation with two prospective sponsors. One of them says it's a done deal, but I've been there before. When the contract is signed and the money is in the bank, then it's a done deal. Not before." Based on conversations with those potential sponsors, Baker said it is "above 80% likely that we'll be at Daytona with one car, and more than 50% likely that we'll be there with two. But we've got to sign something within the next 10 days to make it happen."(
