Jimmie Johnson Named Driver of the Year

Jimmie Johnson, who earlier this year won his fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championship, was voted the 2010 Driver Of The Year by a panel of industry broadcasters and journalists. Johnson is now tied with Jeff Gordon as the only other four-time Driver Of The Year winner. Mario Andretti, who was the first annual winner in 1967, and Darrell Waltrip are tied with three awards apiece. The DOTY is America’s original race driver’s award. A native of Southern California, Johnson previously won DOTY honors in 2006, 2007, and 2009. In its’ 44th year, the Driver of the Year title is unique because it is the original award of its' type that encompasses all of the racing series and all of the drivers in the United States. A panel of 20 leading journalists and broadcasters from across the U.S. are eligible to vote. Two votes were not tabulated this year. Johnson will receive a trophy and a Tissot wristwatch which will be presented at a place and time to be announced later.(foxnews.com)

Historic Nashville Speedway Track Scheduled For Demolition

Nashville, TN – Racing fans are mobilizing to save a piece of NASCAR history, Nashville Speedway USA. Racing legends Sterling Marlin, Darrell Waltrip, and others, are joining forces to save the famed short track, now being considered for demolition in 2011. The 0.596-mile track is 106 years old, and has hosted 42 Cup races from 1958 to 1984, dozens of Nationwide and Truck Series events, and held a NASCAR sanction for its weekly races through 2008. The vote for demolition will require 3 separate votes of the Nashville Metro Council. The first vote is to be held December 21, 2010. A public hearing is tentatively set for January 10, 2011.

Sterling Marlin told NASCAR.com "I've got a mayor [Karl Dean], and he don't really care nothing about racing, never has." In a recent public hearing, racing supporters recalled then-mayoral candidate Dean pledging, “he was the candidate that would save the racetrack.” Dean narrowly won election in a razor-thin 5-way race for Mayor in 2007. Immediately after winning, the Boston-native initiated a study to begin redeveloping the track and the 117-acre Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Recently, Mayor Karl Dean “reiterated that he sees no future for racing at the fairgrounds racetrack and expects the track to be demolished,” the Tennessean reported December 2, 2010. Marlin counters, “the Mayor's got it in his head that he wants to spend the taxpayers' money and just tear it down. It's turned into a political deal.”

Darrell Waltrip agrees the track should be preserved. “The race track is a part of Nashville and its culture. Careers have started there and it would be shameful not to allow it to continue. The current vision regarding this historic icon is just wrong. If the same amount of energy was put into making it the facility and draw it could be was equal to the amount given to its destruction, it would be an asset the Mayor could boast about all across the state and country,” said Waltrip. Fortunately, the decision to demolish the racetrack is in the hands of the Metro Council. A bill has been submitted to demolish the racetrack and make way for a 40-acre park located in its place. The bill also ends the Tennessee State Fair and closes the Fairgrounds and Expo center. The bill will face 3 separate votes, as well as a public hearing as requested by the group, Save My Fairgrounds.

Waltrip, Marlin and others have hired the Calvert Street Group, a national land-use and political consulting firm with experience in dealing with Not-In-My-Back-Yard (NIMBY) issues. Darden Copeland of the Calvert Street Group stated, “Race tracks across the country are under attack. We need to draw a line in the sand and save the Nashville Speedway. We may not have a Cup series race next year, but this is a farm league where many in NASCAR got their start.” Copeland went on to say “not everyone can afford to attend a pro football game, or enjoys the ballet. Our Speedway still provides first class, affordable family-rooted entertainment for all walks of life.” Copeland helped form the group “Save My Fairgrounds”, and is getting supporters organized through petition gathering, social media, and grassroots lobbying.

Background

The Nashville Speedway is one of the oldest tracks in the US, dating back to 1904. Despite its age, drivers and fans from across the country still cite Nashville as one of the top short tracks in the US - a favorite among drivers. Marlin said “I think Nashville's the second-oldest race track in the United States. It's not a place you can easily replace. You talk to some of the drivers that's raced there, the older drivers, they love racing the short track. You don't tear nothing up. There's a lot of room to run side by side. It's laid out perfect."

A group dedicated to saving and renovating the Fairgrounds and Speedway has emerged. Save My Fairgrounds, LLC has formed with Fair and Expo interests, racing fans, and local citizens committed to saving the Speedway. They have collected nearly 45,000 signatures in support of the Fairgrounds and Speedway. They are collecting electronic petition signatures and accepting donations online at www.savemyfairgrounds.com.

Importantly, he has been part of the Roush Fenway family for many years, beginning as outside counsel and then as head of our business operations this year. Since his arrival, I've been extremely pleased with his business acumen, work ethic and his desire to engage in all aspects of our business. • Edwards to appear in HBO mini-series: #99-Carl Edwards has been cast in HBO's forthcoming Civil War mini-series, "To Appomattox", as General John B. Gordon, a Confederate General selected by Robert E. Lee to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia. The real Gordon became one of the two authors of "Honor Answering Honor" and, by this gesture, returned the private Southern soldier to the Union with respect and dignity. The series centers around the final battle of the Civil War and stars Michael C. Hall (Dexter) as General Ulysses S. Grant, William Petersen (CSI) as General William Tecumseh Sherman, Paul Giamatti (John Adams) as James "Pete" Longstreet and Bill Paxton (Big Love) as Stonewall Jackson (NASCAR Examiner), the series is in discussions with additional NASCAR affiliated drivers to play other featured roles.(12-20-2010)
  • 40 Fewer ServiceMaster Clean Cautions This Season: The 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season had a significant decrease in the number of cautions compared to 2009. There were 265 ServiceMaster Clean cautions during the regular-season, 36-race schedule just completed compared to 305 in 2009. The number was 56 less than the 321 cautions in 2008. ServiceMaster Clean, well known internationally for its cleaning and restoration services, is completing its second season as the official sponsor of caution periods at the 19 International Speedway Corp. and Speedway Motorsports Inc. tracks, as well as Dover International Speedway. ServiceMaster Clean participated in 33 of the 36 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races during the season (Pocono and Indianapolis are not part of the program). When there was a problem on the track and the yellow flag was displayed, the company's familiar yellow vehicles were dispatched to clean the track.
All 36 races went the scheduled distance, but two (spring races at Martinsville and Texas) were postponed until Monday due to rain. Only two other events (Michigan2 and Richmond2) were interrupted by a caution for rain. Five of the first nine races were extended beyond the scheduled distance for a green-white-checkered finish, but only two in the last 27 races. See the following charts:

  • Kvapil back to the Truck Series? NASCAR Insiders are hearing that Mike Skinner has been let go from Randy Moss Motorsports. This ends a two year relationship. Supposedly Travis Kvapil is the likely replacement for Skinner at RMM. Kvapil's last full season in the Truck Series was 2007 with Roush Fenway Racing. There were 176 ballots submitted from U.S. news organizations that make up the AP's membership. Brees received 48 votes, while the 2009 AP Male Athlete of the Year, NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, finished second with 31. Boxer Manny Pacquiao was third with 21 votes, followed by Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay with 17. • Tax-cut legislation includes benefits for NASCAR Tracks: A host of industries, from Caribbean distilleries to Hollywood producers, would gain billions in tax breaks and other subsidies under compromise tax-cut legislation now moving its way through Congress. The $858 billion package approved by the Senate is focused primarily on continuing the Bush administration tax cuts for two years, extending unemployment benefits and other large-scale expenditures. But buried inside the legislation are more than $55 billion in other giveaways and tax reductions for some of Washington's most influential industry groups. Owners of NASCAR tracks and other motor-sports facilities would benefit from two more years of a tax policy making it cheaper for them to fund capital projects. Estimated cost to taxpayers: $40 million. The motor-sports provision stems from an ongoing dispute between racetrack owners and the Internal Revenue Service, which concluded that racing facilities should be subject to longer depreciation schedules - thus decreasing tax benefits for owners. The motor-sports industry, including the popular NASCAR series, argues that a shorter, seven-year depreciation schedule used by amusement parks and similar facilities should apply instead. Congress has periodically approved the accelerated depreciation schedule since 2004; the tax-cuts bill would extend the provision again through 2011. The main beneficiaries of the provision would be large track owners such as International Speedway Corp. and Speedway Motorsports. But other racing organizations also support the change. "For us to be able to run our events at the track, you have to have quality facilities," said Ramsey Poston, managing director of corporate communications at NASCAR. "Being able to provide the track owners the opportunity to invest more in their tracks and make them better and safer is important for us and our fans."(in part from the Washingtom Post)(12-18-2010)
  • Winner of Custom Cobra Replica announced: Kenny Crites, of Charleston, S.C., is the lucky new owner of Tommy Pike's powerful custom Cobra replica after winning Speedway Children's Charities custom car raffle. The raffle began nearly four months ago during the August Food Lion AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway and more than 1,000 tickets were sold, raising nearly $24,000 for children in need. The custom Cobra replica was built in just five days during the August Food Lion AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The team from Tommy Pike Customs, from Greenville, S.C., turned a pile of parts into a high-performance roadster while AutoFair spectators watched. The crew worked 14 hours a day and put more than 500 total man hours into the car to build the custom Cobra replica from scratch. All proceeds from the raffle benefitted Speedway Children's Charities Charlotte Chapter and will help local children in need.(CMS)(12-18-2010

·         NASCAR to elimate catch can UPDATEs: At the start of the 2010 season, NASCAR introduced a new style fuel can for the Truck Series that eliminated the need for a catch can guy. Because of this new can, NASCAR limited the number of over-the-wall crew members in the Truck Series to six: two tire changers, two tire carriers, a jackman, and a fueler. Teams could still technically use a catch can guy, they would just have to eliminate one of the other positions. NASCAR Insiders are hearing now that NASCAR is seriously considering bringing this new style fuel can to both the Nationwide and Cup Series for the 2011 season. If this happens, it would mean the elimination of the catch can man for both of these two series as well.(NASCAR Insiders)(4-2-2010)
UPDATE: hearing that the Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series will be going to the same six man pit crew format that the Camping World Truck Series has been running this season, starting in Daytona 2011. They will be using a similar single-point, self-venting probe and dry brake system (9-23-2010)
UPDATEs: NASCAR is trying to make pit road safer in all three of its national tours in 2011 as the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series will now adopt the refueling system currently used in the Camping World Truck Series. NASCAR vice president for competition Robin Pemberton revealed during a media briefing in conjunction with a Goodyear tire test Thursday at Daytona that the change will debut in the two premier tours at Speedweeks 2011 at Daytona International Speedway, whereby "self-venting dump cans" will be used to refuel cars on pit stops. The system, which was made an option at the beginning of the 2010 season in the Truck Series, eliminates the seventh over-the-wall crewman who held a catch can to retrieve fuel that might spill from a vent on the back of the car. "Over our three national series, we'll run a fueling system that will eliminate the catch-can guy [because] it fuels and vents all in one process," Pemberton said. "It's what the trucks have used, successfully." In addition to eliminating the most exposed member of the over-the-wall crew, since the catch-can member would have their back to oncoming traffic, Pemberton said the advent of E-15 ethanol fuel also figured into the decision. "It better enables us to keep a control on the open container of fuel," Pemberton said. "Because with the E-15 you want to make sure you never get any moisture introduced into that and this better helps that."(NASCAR.com)(12-17-2010)

UPDATE: Former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Mike Skinner is saying little about published reports that he has been released by Randy Moss Motorsports with a year remaining on his contract. Skinner told Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody only that, "I still have a contract with Randy Moss Motorsports through 2011." He declined to comment further, citing ongoing negotiations between himself and the team. The 2010 season was disappointing one for Skinner, with an eighth-place finish in points and only two Top-5 finishes in 25 starts. His best finishes were a pair of fourth-place showings at Texas and Bristol Motor Speedways. While Skinner remains silent, sources within Randy Moss Motorsports say he is unlikely to drive for the team again in 2011. Multiple sources say the team is negotiating with former series champion Travis Kvapil about replacing Skinner, with an official announcement expected once the details of Skinner's exit are finalized. Kvapil drove for Front Row Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2010, finishing 35th in points.(

(TOLEDO, Ohio - December 20, 2010) - Patrick Sheltra will be the first to admit that he has never been a man to do things the customary way, and it's that attitude and drive that helped him win his first ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards championship in 2010.

Clay Rogers Headlines Honorees at Awards Night

Concord, N.C. (December 16, 2010) – Clay Rogers headlined a group of drivers honored last night at the 2010 USARacing Pro Cup Series Awards Banquet.

The event was held at the Vintage Motor Club in Concord, N.C. and 150 guests toasted the accomplishments of series champion Rogers, who collected his fourth Pro Cup Series championship, tying him with Bobby Gill for most series titles.  The Mooresville, N.C. native racked up seven wins, seven poles and 13 top-10 finishes in 14 starts.  He finished 49 points ahead of second-place Caleb Holman.

After accepting his trophy, Rogers thanked each member of his team for their dedication and hard work then complimented his fellow competitors and owners of the series.

“I’m proud of everyone in this room tonight for their dedication to this series,” Rogers said.  “I noticed on the slideshow how much our little girl has grown up this season and I want to thank the owners of this series for creating an environment when we can bring her to the racetrack.  You just don’t have that in other series."

“I consider Bobby Gill to be one of the greatest short track drivers maybe ever [smiles]. He’s got four championships and to be tied with him is pretty special.  It’s very special, especially coming in and doing it with a new team, our first year with a new team.  A lot of learning each other, and the whole year has been a building process really.  We’ve had a lot of fun this year.  We won half the races in the series which is a pretty impressive number I think.  I’m proud to be a part of this team.  I’m glad that they looked towards me when they were looking for someone to come drive it.  I was the fortunate one that got the call.”

Raybestos® Rookie of the Year Logan Ruffin was recognized for his outstanding debut season in the series.  Ruffin, a 16-year old native of Memphis, Tenn., placed fifth in the series championship standings and posted five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 14 starts.  While onstage Ruffin presented members of his team with plaques for their support.

“It’s an honor to be Raybestos Rookie of the Year,” Ruffin said.  “I want to thank Steve Turner and all the guys at Turner Motorsports for their support.  When we started this season we wanted get seat time, win rookie of the year and finish top-five in points and we were fortunate enough to do all of that.”

Ryan Heavner earned USARacing Pro Cup Series Humantarian of the Year for his charitable efforts to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.  The Lincolnton, N.C. native made history this season by becoming the youngest driver to compete in the Pro Cup Series and Heavner did a respectable job, scoring one top-five and six top-10 finishes in 14 starts.

Rogers’ crew chief Jamie Mosley earned Crew Chief of the Year honors.  Team owner David “Buggy” Pletcher, who finished eighth in the series owner standings, with driver Stephen Nasse, won the use of a Lonestar branded road tractor for the 2011 racing season.  Teams who competed in 80 percent of the races in 2010 will be eligible to win the use of the truck and a blind draw will determine the winning team.  International Truck and Engine Corporation/Navistar is the Official Truck of the Pro Cup Series.
