Sprint Cup Race Recap: Its Johnson's Night at the Sprint
All-Star Race
by Jeff Wolfe
Jimmie Johnson can’t seem to do anything wrong these days.
And after Saturday night’s Sprint Cup All-Star race at Charlotte Motor
Speedway, he had a million reasons to confirm it. Johnson won his third
Sprint All-Star Race and took home the million dollar prize. He had help
from his pit crew, which after winning the pit crew contest Thursday, allowed
him to have the first pit box.
Then after winning the final ten lap segment of the five-segment, 90-lap race,
he got it right again. This time, he picked up team owner Rick Hendrick
and took him for a ride down the frontstretch on the way to Victory Lane.
It was Hendrick’s owner-leading seventh All-Star victory.
“He said 'come pick me up',” Johnson said of the radio conversation with
Hendrick after taking the checkered flag. “Once I got to him he didn’t
want the ride. ‘I’m like no, no, I came to get you, get on the car.’ It
was great to take him around.”
What has to be considered a great week for Johnson included him winning the
first 20-lap segment. That victory allowed him to choose the first
starting position in the final 10-lap segment. That first pit box also
helped him as the drivers had to do a stop-and-go pit stop before the final
segment. Even though Johnson spun his tires exiting his pit box, he beat
second segment winner Matt Kenseth to the line at the end of pit road.
“The race car was so amazing,” said Johnson, who also won at Darlington last
week to give Hendrick his 200th career win as an owner. “I put it around
the top to go for the lead. I just let it ride around the top and
got the lead. Then we were smart from there to make sure we got it right
so we would be good in the end.”
Johnson was too good for third segment winner Brad Keselowski on the final
restart. He pulled away on the first lap and Keselowski could never mount
a challenge.
“It’s all about the restart,” Keselowski said. “I was hoping to get
another yellow to get another shot on Jimmie. You could see all night the
high line on the restart just wouldn’t go. I don’t know if I would have
been able to do anything with him, but I would have liked another shot. I
thought I could do something with him in the first lap. We might have been
a touch faster, but it wasn’t meant to be.”
Kenseth, who appeared to spin his tires a bit on the final restart, ended up
third and Kyle Busch was fourth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fifth in the
non-points race.
While Earnhardt Jr. didn’t challenge for the lead in the final ten laps, he
spent a lot of the night at the front of the field. First, he had to
finish in the top-2 in the Sprint Showdown to make the Sprint All-Star
Race. But, that wasn’t an issue as he led all 40 laps of the
Showdown. A.J. Allmendinger, who had to go to the pits on the first lap
because of a flat tire, rallied to edge Jamie McMurray to finish second and
reach the All-Star Race. Also, Bobby Labonte won the Sprint Fan Vote to
make the all-star race.
But Earnhardt Jr. wasn’t finished winning after the Showdown. He led 19
of the 20 laps in the fourth segment, meaning he led 59 of 130 laps he ran on
the night. He hopes that’s a good sign of things to come in Sunday
night’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte.
“The race car was good,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “We didn’t adjust on our car
because it was pretty quick all night and all day yesterday (Friday). You
just need to start on the front row at the end. I’m proud of the effort
tonight. We’ve good a good race car. We’ll probably bring this one
back next week.”
Johnson will also be back and certainly emerged as a favorite next week on a
track where he’s had nine victories, including the three All-Star wins.
Johnson tied Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon and the late Dale
Earnhardt for the most all-star wins.
There were no yellow flags for accidents and the only two cars in the 23-car
field that did not finish were Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and
Carl Edwards due to engine trouble. Rounding out the top-10 were Kevin
Harvick in sixth followed by Marcos Ambrose, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne and Ryan
Newman.
It was evident early in the night that Johnson’s engine and car was going to be
strong.
“He started sixth, I believe, and drove to the lead in 20 laps,” Keselowski
said. “I think that's probably a pretty good indicator of the strength of
his car. I don't believe he passed anyone that was not good. We'll
just leave it at that."
“He passed Kyle, I think Denny (Hamlin), maybe Harvick, Newman. Those
aren't slouches that he passed, and he passed them in 20 laps. I think
that's a pretty good indicator of the strength of his effort. Whether
that's the car or driver, I'll let you all figure that out. That's a
pretty good indicator he was the guy to beat all night.”
Next weekend, the Sprint Cup Series returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the
53rd running of the Coca-Cola 600. Pre-race coverage begins on FOX at
5:30pm EDT, with race coverage following at 6. The green flag is
scheduled to fall at approximately 6:16pm EDT.

Stenhouse Wins Iowa Nationwide Race
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s success at Iowa Speedway continues.
The defending NASCAR Nationwide Series points champion extended his winning
streak at Iowa Speedway. Stenhouse dominated the field for most of the race to
capture the checkered flag at the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 in front of 34,000 fans
Sunday. The win is the third straight at the 0.875-mile track for Stenhouse,
who swept the two Nationwide races held here last year. "Man, this one was
fun," Stenhouse said. "I love dominating those races." --/-- The
Roush Fenway Racing driver claimed his third win in 10 starts this season,
extending his series lead to 28 points over Elliott Sadler, who was second.
Stenhouse grabbed his first lead by overtaking Sam Hornish Jr. on Lap 31 en
route to leading 209 laps, tying an Iowa Speedway record set by Busch in 2010.
"It feels good to win three in a row," Stenhouse said. "It was a
lot of fun, leading that many laps."
Stenhouse became the first Nationwide driver to win three
straight at a track since Kyle Busch won three straight at Texas Motor Speedway
in 2009-2010. The streak was not a conversation topic, but no words were
needed. "That's what we set out to do," Stenhouse said. "We
didn't talk too much about it in the shop, but everybody knew we had one thing
in mind coming here." --/-- The rest of the field could not keep up with
Stenhouse, who blew away the field. It is different than Stenhouse's win last
August, when his engine failed on the final lap and he was pushed across the
finish line by teammate Carl Edwards, who couldn't avoid the accident.
"This is the way you want to run," Stenhouse said. "You want to
come out here and dominate."
Cautions were the only thing that proved capable of closing
the gap on Stenhouse's leads, which grew to nearly five seconds at times. He
held off the likes of Kurt Busch, Elliott Sadler and Justin Allgaier during
late restarts. The yellow flag caused Stenhouse to drop as low as fourth, after
Danica Patrick's blown right front tire slid her into the wall in the early
going. Cole Whitt restarted at the lead spot, but Stenhouse soon passed Sadler
for the lead near the midway point. Things became interesting with 65 laps
remaining as Busch completed his move from worst to first after a restart. Less
than a lap later, Stenhouse moved back into first and ran to Victory Lane.
"When you have a race car like we did you don't ever want a caution to
come out. It does and that's just the way it is," Stenhouse said. "I
just wanted to make sure I was cautious. The race was just super-fast to get
back to the front."
The progression continues for Stenhouse and his team as they
stay ahead of their pace set last year. Crew chief Mike Kelley prepared his
team for a tough test, stressing it needed to work harder than ever to avoid
losing steam. "When you get on streaks or have a good deal going that if
this was a race we didn't win, I didn't want it to kill our momentum,"
Kelley said. "We had finished better at every track to this race than we
did last year. We were 76 points ahead of where we were last year after nine
races." --/-- With no Sprint Cup race Sunday and most racing fans' eyes
focused on Newton, the win had added importance. "To come here to Iowa in
front of a packed house," Kelley said, "and to win the race the way
we did today was a bold statement about where our team is and who our driver
is."
Sadler, who started on the pole, earned his third straight
top-five finish at Iowa Speedway, leading two laps. He said the team made key
adjustments through the race and was running its best at the end. The fourth
and final caution, when former Motocross champion Travis Pastrana suffered
electrical problems and bowed out at 26th hampered any chances to catch
Stenhouse. "It's frustrating to finish second. I thought we had a car that
could win the race," Sadler said. "I'm proud of my guys to rebound
the way they did." --/-- Michael McDowell snuck in late to place third.
Austin Dillon was fourth, and increased his lead for Rookie of the Year honors.
McDowell said his car excelled on long runs. He climbed up to third after the
third caution, but was assessed a speeding penalty in the pits, dropping him to
the back of the pack. "I just made a mistake," McDowell said.
"There were a lot of lapped cars between first and second and I tried to
close the gap a little bit and just overdid it. It just showed how strong our
car was."
Busch had a strong run, finishing fifth after placing eighth
at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night at Charlotte Motor
Speedway. Drew Herring qualified the car 31st, but Busch started at the back.
"It's great to sniff the lead, get close to it," Busch said.
"It's just missing a couple little components." --/-- He was third
when he got caught up with McDowell on the final lap. Busch saved the car in a
lengthy sideways slide to preserve a fifth-place finish. "At the end, my
weak spot was Turn 1," Busch said. "We were loose getting in there
all day. McDowell got down in there, I was trying to hold him off and that's
what racing is all about. Two guys got together. Yeah, we got the short end of
the stick but I don't care." --/-- Darrell Wallace Jr., who made his
Nationwide Series debut with Joe Gibbs Racing, placed ninth. (NASCAR Wire

- NASCAR Signs Memorandum Of Understanding With The
EPA: NASCAR and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) entered
into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that provides a framework to
encourage greater environmental awareness and adoption of green products

voluntary partnership around education and awareness. The agreement
denotes some core areas NASCAR and the EPA will collaborate on moving
forward including the following programs: E3: Economy, Energy and
Environment; and Design for the Environment (DfE) labeled consumer and
commercial products. The MOU, which can be accessed at bit.ly/EPA-NASCAR-mou(pdf), will
pave the way for other opportunities and areas of focus for EPA and NASCAR
such as sourcing more sustainable concessions at NASCAR events, expanding
the use of DfE-labeled chemical products, conserving water, and continuing

Memorial Day Weekend Kicks Off At-track Festivities
For "NASCAR Unites – An American Salute"
NASCAR Industry, Fans Unite To Celebrate America And
Support U.S. Military Families
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 21, 2012) — Billed as the
world’s largest Memorial Day Weekend celebration, the Coca-Cola 600 at
Charlotte Motor Speedway kicks off the first at-track activation of “NASCAR
Unites – An American Salute,” a six-week patriotic initiative uniting the
NASCAR industry and fans this summer to celebrate America and support U.S.
military families. The weekend’s festivities include a patriotic pre-race
military salute, special USO race invitations and host Lieutenant Colonel Greg
Gadson as Honorary Commander.
To highlight its pride, NASCAR Nation will be covered from
head to toe – and from splitter to spoiler – in red, white and blue, starting
and ending at two traditionally patriotic summer NASCAR events held at
Charlotte Motor Speedway (Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day Weekend) and Daytona
International Speedway (Coke Zero 400 on Independence Day Weekend).
Teams in all NASCAR series, along with their partners and
sponsors, will showcase support for the program in their own individual ways,
from displaying the customized logo on their cars and trucks to developing red,
white and blue paint schemes. NASCAR has provided specially-designed,
patriotic-themed packages that will incorporate the spoiler as well as other
common areas of the car.
In honor of our country’s fallen heroes this Memorial Day
weekend, NASCAR and the Honor and Remember organization will host several Gold
Star families who have each lost loved ones in their service to the United
States. NASCAR and The NASCAR Foundation also will host a group of wounded
warriors and their families from Ft. Bragg as part of the NASCAR “Troops to the
Track” program in partnership with the Armed Forces Foundation. Each of these
military families will be welcomed and treated to a VIP NASCAR experience
during their visit to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“Our Troops to the Track and the Gold Star family programs
offer us all an opportunity to express our gratitude to the service men and
women who wear the uniform and the military families who have made the ultimate
sacrifice for our freedoms,” said Marcus Jadotte, NASCAR vice president of
public affairs and multicultural development. “Through these programs, NASCAR
is uniting to honor these military families and honor them for the sacrifices
they have made for our country.”
Both the NASCAR “Troops to the Track” and Gold Star family
programs build on a long, consistent and proud history of supporting men and
women in uniform and their families at NASCAR races. The “Troops to the Track”
program is a year-long initiative and is scheduled to include military families
at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Dover International Speedway, Pocono Raceway,
Michigan International Speedway, Infineon Raceway, Kentucky Speedway, and
Daytona International Speedway.
While at the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR fans are invited to
participate by filling out postcards with messages of encouragement and
appreciation to service men and women as well as signing banners and items that
will be shipped to troops actively engaged in combat through the USO’s USO2GO
program. The NASCAR Foundation will designate a space for fan participation at
the Sam Bass Gallery on Saturday, May 26th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday,
May 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fans may also fill out postcards at-track at the
Air Force display and Motorsports Authentic Haulers.
Other partners and sponsors participating include: Miss Sprint
Cup, who will unveil a never-seen-before patriotic-themed fire suit, Nationwide
will run a special red, white and blue windshield application for all
NASCAR Nationwide Series races from Charlotte to Daytona and Toyota will
incorporate red, white and blue logos on their pace cars and driver intro
trucks. Miss Coors Light will don a patriotic fire suit. Goodyear
will launch their Goodyear 'Gives Back Program Benefitting Support
Our Troops' program during the Coke Zero 400. As part of the USO2GO program,
partners such as Kraft and Gillette are donating
products that will be bundled and delivered to forward deployed troops. K’Nex
will donate toys to be packaged with postcards to military children.
Red, white and blue products will also be provided to NASCAR
officials, who will be outfitted in NASCAR pit caps by Motorsports Authentics,
specially-themed gloves by Mechanix Wear and lanyards by Wincraft. Fans also
can show their American pride by gearing up with NASCAR Unites – An American
Salute apparel, which can be purchased via Motorsports Authentics and
Americrown at trackside, Walmart and
NASCAR.COM Superstore. Other available
products include NASCAR Unites – An American Salute die-cast collectibles,
headwear, t-shirts, novelties, plush and toys.
To launch the initiative, the NASCAR Unites – An American
Salute paint scheme for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 National Guard Hendrick
Motorsports Chevrolet was revealed on April 9th in the nation’s capital for the
134th Annual Easter Egg Roll event at the White House.
