Hi there rubyists,

I wanted spread the word about a data transparency project called Open
Missouri that I'm working on as a fellow at the Reynolds Journalism
Institute in Columbia.

The centerpiece of project will be an online catalog that provides
details about the databases that Missouri state and local agencies
store offline. I’m hoping the project can serve as a model and
inspiration for other states. I have a team of master’s students from
the Missouri School of Journalism who are busy collecting data
inventories from state agencies. Community members will be able to
contribute their own catalog entries and
attach data file examples.

We've hired a Rails developer who's going to use Sunlight's
Foundation's National Data Catalog code to get a head start. We're
going to make our code open source for anyone who wants to use it.

If you’re interested in learning more, you can follow @OpenMissouri on
Twitter or from the RJI site: http://www.rjionline.org/fellows-program/herzog/index.php.

My latest blog post about the project is here:
http://rjiblog.org/2010/11/17/crunch-time-for-open-missouri/.

I'm interested in hearing any ideas you might have for the project.

Thanks.

Nice to hear from you David! I am actually in Columbia now and I'm
currently running a Rich web Development usergroup
(http://comorichweb.posterous.com/) although the topics can be
anything. Our next meeting is December 15th and I have someone doing a
presentation on hosting rails apps with Heroku.

You guys are more than welcome to join us and it'd be great if I could
get you to talk about the project sometime as I'm looking to have not
just tech talks but also include presentations about projects such as
this. :)

Thanks,
James

Hi James,

Thanks much for the intro and for for reaching out about the user
group. I'll see if I can make it to the December meeting. I'd love to
talk to the group about Open Missouri, too, after we get something up
and running in early 2011.

David
