We should really be getting out in the developer community in the
area. We should be holding Ruby/Rails workshops to recruit more
people. I originally came from the .NET world, so I know the joy of
coming at Ruby from that angle.

I would hope to do them for free or at a minimal cost so the barrier
for people to come is more time based than financial based.

Again, it's a space/venue issue, but if we can all work it out, I
think it would be a great thing.

I've found most workshops useless. I think a free hack day would be better.

Hi,

I wonder if we could make make an app for this (organizing a projects
from volunteers with goals needs timeline etc voting for which
projects gets off the ground etc)...
just an idea. since people here seem like they are planning stuff.
something like basecamp (although i have never seen an actual basecamp
project) only open to everyone who need to organize anything.
since we're planning to make a group made app anyway...
my 2 cents.

wallflower,
Angelo

You wouldn't be the target market though. You are already familiar
with Ruby and Rails.

For project collaboration, I'm a big fan of http://bettermeans.com and it's open source entity, http://bettermeans.org
I think it's perfect for something like this.
Also, it's a rails app.

As long as your project is open and public, you can have unlimited users and workstreams and host it on their servers. You can also deploy your own instance for free if you want.

There's a pretty good/short video on their homepage that explains why it's unique without being boring.

So how can we apply this to what were doing?
can we list the projects that are being pushed
and add the requirements of each into them and then vote for them?
or add yourself to volunteer for each of the task that is required etc..
would you mind starting one? and sending us the link?

I created a STL Ruby workstream, and then a substream for a specific project called "Awesome Project".

Here's the link to the dashboard of the parent page: https://secure.bettermeans.com/projects/3594/dashboard

When you create a new account (you can login via google, fb, etc. if you want) and try to use the dashboard, you will be prompted to watch a new video that explains how to actually use the program.
