I was lamenting on Twitter yesterday about the lack of a Ruby
conference in St. Louis. It seems like every other metropolitan area
has one.

Is there a reason we don't? I feel like there are a lot of Rubyists in
the area that are in hiding for one reason or another and perhaps
having a Ruby based conference in their area would flush them out.

Has it been tried before?

I'd be interested in seeing something like this start as well. Ruby Midwest in Kansas City has been an incredible conference that's only been going on for 2 years so far. Love to help organize as well.

Maybe we can all get together and work something out next meeting.

sounds good to me

I'm going to the STLJS meetup this thursday, and the alt.net meetup next wednesday. Other than that I'm available anytime.

I started talking about this last year and got very little interest. I would live to do this if people will help.

Cool :).

The place Startup Weekend was held was a nice place. The parking
situation was terrible though honestly.

Really, the venue is the hardest part I think. I'm sure we could get
the speakers if we started a call for proposals.

The hotel Strangeloop was held at was pretty nice. The first Ruby Midwest was also just held in a large room at a university their first year. Getting a hold of a decent place will take some time, but I'm sure we can swing a pretty decent one.

Washington University has some really nice space in the Engineering buildings. They also have a minor history of hosting tech stuff since they hosted an early YAPC::NA as well as a BarCamp.

I'm asking my wife for some help. She's booked venues for Operas in
the past, but some of the contacts might be useful anyway

A good friend of mine put on "OSCON" a couple of years ago, I ping'd him
and he may be interested in an OS side [if one exists]?

OSCON is the open source one right? Rubyists by nature are Open Source
friendly. I'm not sure how much we'd have to do to satisfy his
requirements.

How long do you think it should go? A day, 2 days? Single track, multi
track?

As a conference attendee, I like single track conferences because I
don't have to worry about missing something. Multi track is fine if
all sessions are recorded and put up for viewing later.

Anyone have opinions on that?

He doesn't have any requirments except come closer to breaking even.

My suggestion would be single track, maybe a Friday/Saturday?

The OS side could handle exhibition space for Vendors, .. but, then, it
soon starts looking like Strange Loop!

I don't think that's a problem. If we added workshops before/during
the conference, we'd look like Windy City Rails too :).

Trying not to look like something else shouldn't be a goal :)

I've written up a bunch of conference organization advice in the past
in case any of it is useful.

http://tech.puredanger.com/2011/10/26/conference-planning/
http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/27862/setting-up-developers-conference/87559#87559

My humble advice would be to pick a size target (considering local +
regional) and find a unique venue in an interesting area to serve as a
draw for people from out of town. If you do a one track conf then
there are a lot of interesting options. If you do a one day conf then
you can mostly ignore hotel issues and it frees you up in terms of
location a bit more.

For example, Strange Loop was at the Tivoli in the Loop in 2009 which
was great for that (except the A/V part). Non-traditional venues are
also a lot often cheaper. If the cost is the critical issue, then I'd
try to scope out space at Wash U or SLU. Of if you want into the T-Rex
building, I'm sure you could get it for almost nothing - I have some
contacts there.

Other things I've considered: City Museum, Sheldon, Old Rock House,
theaters in Grand area, etc...

You also need to consider creating a legal entity like an LLC to front
such a thing. Creating a Missouri LLC is about $100 and can be done
online. Creating a federal EIN can also be done online. You don't
have to do this of course, but then the organizers are personally
liable. IANAL.

Alex, would you mind asking your contacts at T-Rex how many people
they think it would reliably hold for a single track conference and
how much they would charge for it? I'd like a general quote.

Casinos have cheap venues. What about the hotel casino downtown?

Or one of the others with *free* parking? Remember that to attract a local
crowd, reasonable or free parking is highly desirable.

Both Harrah's & Ameristar have HUGE hotels attached, .. and at least
Harra's is free parking (have not been to Ameristar lately).

Attract out of town people and speakers with downtown. The arch, landing, a cards game.
