For some time, Numb Buns has been trying to promote the idea of celebrating the Metro St. Louis Area’s Hash Twenty-Fifth anniversary. She contends this will happen mid-October 2008. According to Numb Buns, the hash used to celebrate various anniversaries in its earlier days by 3 days of hashing, Fri-Sat-Sun, instead of camping, float trips, etc.
Numb Buns also thinks the Belleville area should be emphasized. I agree. Belleville is the cradle of St. Louis Hash civilization. We evolved from the Belleville H3 to the Belleville-St. Louis H3 then the St. Louis H3 and the Bell Scot H3 and finally, the present St. Louis H3, Bell Scot H3 and Big Hump H3 along with certain temporary or peripheral hashes like the Full Moon H3 and the Rolling Dice H3. The now-defunct Full Moon H3 also originated in Illinois along with the (very temporary) use of yellow yarn as trail sign.
A quarter century of hashing seems an important milestone to me. It is a guess but I expect the St. Louis H3 is among the oldest 10% of U.S. hashes. The oldest U.S. hash is the Fort Eustis H3 started on 11/08/71, about twelve years earlier. They claim to have run every week since, although I happen to know they skipped a hash on the day of the 9/11 terrorist attack because I was planning to visit them that day during a trip to Norfolk, VA. Fort Eustis is near Langley Air Force Base (Hampton, VA), which is also the oldest continuously active AFB and one duty is protecting Washington, DC. This accounts for 100 percent no-shows for their 9/11 hash. Fort Eustis H3 also strongly favors Milwaukee Beast (see http://www.gthhh.com/hash.asp) as does the nearby Tidewater H3, therefore having impeccable credentials. Dirt Cheap, once it became available, used to be popular here, although we seem to have lost our way. There was another hash, the DC Men’s Hash, that claimed to be older but was not continuous. I cannot find it now.
Anyway, Numb Buns thinks the celebration should be three consecutive days, (Fri-Sat-Sun) with two hashes in Illinois and one hash downtown (maybe Soulard). I think that a good idea. For at least two days, we can take advantage of the overwhelmingly superior Illinois bars instead of the bar disaster here on the west side. This also implies trail-setting duties by those most familiar with these areas. Perhaps, the start locations can be made close to Metro-Link stations. The only improvement I can think of is taking advantage of implied numerical accuracy and truncate some dates into mid-September instead of October. I have known October temperatures to freeze various beverage cans and bottles to picnic tables.
Therefore, the purpose of this message is to suggest we ought to come to some consensus (for a change) on this celebration. Then, all the hash groups should strongly support it. Numb Buns is willing to do a lot of work. This type of event does not need to have pre-registration (except maybe for a shirt) or run up a big tab. If worked right, we can drink Schlafly’s Pale Ale for $2 per pint.[1]

[1] CNN advises the price of beer ingredients (hops, barley, malt, etc.) is rising rapidly. That may make no difference for some beer served at hashes but it will for real beer.
I think it sounds great too and would love to help. Could be done in conjunction with the end of summer hash bash the Big Hump traditionally puts on. The Bell Scott thing could be that Sat, the Big Hump that Sat and the St. Louis that Sunday. The Big Hump thing may be earlier than Oct but I think its close enough.

Below are emails I received regarding a 25-year anniversary 3-days of hashing. Here are some thoughts I have.
1. Remember this was Numb Buns’ idea. I think she has a cheap tee shirt supplier.
2. We need to be prepared for less than strong attendance for any of the three days. Therefore, I think we should try to make this independent of any existing or traditional events. For example, the End of Summer event is highly successful so let’s not tamper with it. I did not go to the first Tumbling Dice hash. However, it seems to me that its success is highly dependent on whoever is chosen as hares (by the roll of the dice), who happens to be there, etc.
3. Numb Buns’ idea was that Illinois should be emphasized. The hashes, other than BellScot, do not have as many Illinois hashes as in the past and Illinois people have to drive 25-50 miles to a hash. I think there should be at least one hash near Scott AFB, which means Bellville, Shiloh, Mascoutah or O’Fallon, because that is where the hash originated. I think another hash should be elsewhere in IL such as Collinsville, Cahokia or Alton. In particular, Alton has been neglected for years while there is plenty of good territory. Also, is some territory along the River Road. (However, I do not want to set any of these hashes.)
4. Another idea I would propose is (other than for a tee shirt) that the ordinary $5 hash cash be charged each day with the promise that it would be used to pay for beer (not food) at the bar or bars until it runs out. This collected money should be segregated and used from day to day for the three days attempting to run it out each day. If it runs out, then attendees chip in. We do this routinely at the Sunday hash (but the Sunday hash is full of lightweight drinkers). In Illinois, this should be easily possible because beer, including microbrewery beer, is about half the price relative to the west side. Moreover, we can find some legitimate bars, rather than the corporate variety. (The west side is likely the most bar deprived area in the U.S.) Perhaps, we could do the same thing with a keg of beer purchased in Illinois. If one or more Illinois hashes can be located near the Metro-Link, so much the better. Food at Illinois bars is usually a bit cheaper too.
5. It was my suggestion to move the event from mid-Oct to mid-Sept for cold weather considerations. Now, it has occurred to me that it can (sometimes) rain heavily in Sept. Personally, I do not see why the weekend should be cast in stone even though the event needs to be publicized in advance. The advance notice could include the possibility of changing the dates. In other words, if we see a weekend with heavy rain forecast, we move it to the following weekend and the various hash groups’ ordinary harelines would require adjustment.
6. I believe only heavy use of Illinois allows this type flexibility on costs. I like the idea of flexibility on the selected weekend too. Both should improve the probability of more attendance for three successive days without making the situation a fully organized and registered, prepaid event. All that is needed is three volunteer hares.
7. These are just my personal ideas. It would shock my socks off if everyone agreed.

Hey Buttsucker -
For what it's worth, the Tumbling Dice Full Moon H3 runs on
September 19, 2008
October 17, 2008
So I like your idea and it would be great if we could take one of these weekends. We could do a Full Moon Hash on Friday, a Big Hump or Bell Scott Hash Saturday and St. Louis on Sunday. Let's talk about it with the powers that be...
