ST. LOUIS Heavy snow including gigantic buckets of thundersnow is
pounding the area, rendering its own version of March Madness.
The late winter storm has canceled about 100 scheduled flights at Lambert
Airport today and tonight, and caused delays for dozens of other flights
while airport runways are plowed and jet aircraft wings are de-iced. It
has also resulted in postponed concerts, closed public facilities and
myriad auto accidents.
Police, fire and EMS crews have responded to multiple reports of vehicles
sliding off the road, into median barriers and into each other. Motorists
are advised to stay at home.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the
region through tonight, with expected accumulations totaling between
eight to 10 inches overall and the possibility of even higher levels in
the northwest suburbs.
The St. Louis area dodged a first wave of snowfall, but the storm began to
hit hard this morning. Snow is expected to taper off this evening, but
light snow or flurries are likely to accompany Monday morning's commute,
bringing an additional one half inch by mid-afternoon.
"We've had lots of reports of thundersnow... all across the area," said
forecaster Jon Carney for the National Weather Service. He said that
reports of thundersnow when thunderclouds carry lightning and heavier
precipitation into the snowstorm have surfaced in St. Louis and St.
Charles counties as well as the Illinois counties of St. Clair and
Madison.
For areas south of Highway 44 in Missouri and Highway 64 in Illinois, a
late morning storm was forecast to have begun as rain or sleet. For the
areas to the north it started as snow. But by this afternoon and early
evening, the entire region should be hit with snow or thundersnow, leaving
accumulations of nearly 9 inches.
The St. Louis Art Museum announced it would close at noon Sunday. The
Science Center also was closed today, with plans to reopen Monday morning.
The Zoo closed its buildings at 11 a.m. today, and closed its grounds at 1
p.m. These public facilities plan to reopen Monday morning.
St. Louis Outlet Mall also closed all of its retail and outlet stores and
restaurants today.
The Evensong with an offering of the Durufle' Requiem scheduled for this
evening at Christ Church Cathedral has been postponed to 5 p.m. on Sunday,
April 28 due to the snowstorm, concert officials said.
And the artwork dedication scheduled for Monday morning at the Stadium
MetroLink Station has been postponed to be rescheduled at another time.
MetroLink officials, however, said they have continued to provide normal
Sunday service without delays. The Metro Call-A-Ride service is also
operating.
Rain began falling Saturday evening at Lambert St. Louis International
Airport, and at least one airline Southwest began cancelling flights.
The airline, Lamberts largest, cancelled several flights leaving between
8 and 10 a.m. from St. Louis to Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles and
New York, among other cities.
"The airport's operational. The runways are open," said Lambert Airport
spokesman Jeff Lee, adding that two shifts of 12-hour crews are keeping
ramps and runways clear. But, he added, the snow has resulted in
cancellations of 47 departing flights and 52 arriving flights through
tonight, which is about 20 percent of the airport's Sunday schedule.
Southwest's website notes that the airline is "monitoring" winter weather
moving into the Midwest, and that flights through Monday could be
"delayed, diverted, or cancelled."
Brad Hawkins, a spokesman for Southwest, said the plan was to begin to
slowly ramp-up its operations at Lambert this afternoon. He acknowledged,
however, that the weather may not cooperate.
As the snow moves, we move the plan, Hawkins said.
Early Sunday morning, United Airlines posted information indicating that
most of its operations would probably remain normal at Lambert. However,
United canceled three of its flights to Chicago, where heavy snow was
expected to curtail airport operations.
So far, no fatalities have been reported due to weather related accidents
today, but there are scores of fender bender accidents being reported in
St. Louis, St. Louis County and over the highways in Missouri and
Illinois.
Alicia Smith, with the Missouri Highway patrol, said there have been "tons
of multiple accidents all morning."
"It's all over in every single county," Smith said. "We are swamped."
Dispatchers with the Illinois State Police were so busy they couldn't
answer questions and asked to call back later for details but no
fatalities reported din either state.
St. Clair County Sheriff Sgt. Lee Graham said they are thankful that
drivers are taking it slow or staying off the roads.
"We have not had any accidents yet," Graham said at 11:20 a.m. today.
Graham hopes it stays the same.
The city of St. Louiss emergency management agency warned Saturday
afternoon that travel during the snowstorm will be extremely difficult
if not impossible.
It recommended travel only with a full tank of gas, snow shovel,
flashlight, cellphone, blankets and extra warm clothing.
The Missouri Department of Transportation put out a travel advisory
Saturday evening warning of heavy, wet snow with limited visibility.
Residents, the advisory said, should stay off roads in central and
northern Missouri Saturday night and early Sunday unless absolutely
necessary.
Give MoDOT crews a chance to clear roads, the advisory requested.
Crews, it said, would be working overnight and all day Sunday.
