Car burglary arrests / magazine sales Tuesday, November 17, 2009 11:51

We made a good arrest over the week-end inside Eagle Trace Condo’s
(1609 NW 29th Road). Juveniles were arrested after they entered four
unlocked vehicles.

Please feel free to post/pass on this “Lock it or lose it” flyer to
remind citizens to not only lock their vehicle doors, but to also
avoid leave valuables (purses, cell phones, change, and GPS systems)
in plain sight inside their vehicles.

Also, there is a group of subjects selling magazine subscriptions in
Gainesville. They claim to be working for Atlantic Circulations. I
contacted Atlantic Circulations’ headquarters and was told that they
are not currently selling magazines in our state. These subjects are
committing fraud. If you are solicited by these subjects, please
report them by calling 955-1818.

Remember: Lock it or Lose it!
The Gainesville Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit is asking
you to make the choice; Lock your vehicle doors or risk losing
valuable items.

Here are some tips for vehicle burglary prevention:

1. Be sure to roll up windows and lock all doors when exiting the
vehicle. Think “lock it or lose it”.
2. Never leave valuables, such as purses, wallets, cell phones,
change, or CDs in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. The
trunk is a more secure place to store items.
3. If your car stereo has a detachable faceplate, be sure to detach it
and store it in a secure place. Remember that a loud car stereo is
not only illegal; it advertises your sound system to criminals.
4. Park in well-lighted, well-traveled areas away from shrubbery that
would obscure the view to your vehicle.
5. Do not park your car in between two larger cars. For example,
don’t park a compact car in between two large vehicles.
6. If you use an interior windshield sunshade, be sure to park in a
manner that does not limit the view inside your vehicle. For example,
do not back into a parking space and then put up a windshield
sunshade. This prevents passersby from seeing inside your vehicle.
7. If you have a car alarm, use it.
8. If you have a garage, use it.

Update from Officer Mazzuca:


Update: I have clarified that the magazine sales group in our area are
working for Midwest Circulations, not Atlantic Circulations, which
looks to be a legitimate business although the salespersons are
somewhat questionable. Please be very cautions when dealing with them
and call 955-1818 if they violate your “no solicitation” signs.
