Title: Tissue Engineering with Carbon Nanomaterials and Stem Cells
Abstract: Recent advances in creating nanomaterials have led to several opportunities in biomedical research and clinical applications. Specifically, nanostructured carbons or carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene possess unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties which present novel opportunity for their applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. They can also provide a similar microenvironment like a biological extracellular matrix in terms of chemical composition and physical structure, making them a potential candidate for the development of artificial scaffolds. To evaluate such possibility, we have functionalized CNTs for enhancement of their biocompatibility. Simultaneously, we have explored and successfully utilized the PEGylated ultrapure multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-PEG) graft copolymers and graphene as suitable bio compatible scaffold for proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and their differentiation into osteoblastic lineage via osteoinduction and osteogenesis using suitable medium. The results suggest a promising role for functionalized CNTs and graphene as reinforcing agents due to their high mechanical strength as well as their use as biocompatible scaffolds for applications in tissue engineering and bone repair. Particularly, graphene with high elasticity, flexibility and adaptability to flat or irregular shaped surfaces, was found to support sustained proliferation and enhanced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. While these nanomaterials are relatively new and research on their potential applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is still at a nascent stage, further in vitro and in vivo investigations will ultimately lead to their use as implantable tissue engineering material in future.

Next talk: On Tuesday, April 16, our speaker will be Kran Suknuntha, Research Assistant, Cellular and Molecular Pathology (Slukvin lab), who will be speaking on “Generation of Leukemic stem cell-like cells from iPSCs derived from Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.” This talk will be in Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery (WID), H.F. Deluca Forum in the Town Center on the first floor, and will include sandwiches.
