Our last talk this semester will be on Tuesday, May 7, and will start at noon promptly. We look forward to another wonderful visiting speaker, Samuel Rabkin from Harvard Medical School.

We will continue to meet in The Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery (WID) for most of the talks. We will be meeting in the H.F. Deluca Forum in the Town Center on the first floor. Please ask at Information Desk if you are unsure where to go. We will continue to provide sandwiches and chips starting at 11:50am (water will be provided but if you want something else to drink please bring your own.)

Date: Tuesday, May 7

Speaker: Samuel Rabkin, Associate Professor, Surgery/Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Harvard Medical School

Title: Cancer Stem Cells in Glioblastoma

Abstract: Cancer stem cells are posited to be a subpopulation of transformed cells in tumors with stem-like properties; self-renewal and differentiation into multiple lineages. They are thought to be important in cancer progression, tumor heterogeneity, and response to therapy. Glioblastoma is the most common primary brain tumor in adults and the prognosis for patients is exceedingly poor. Glioblastoma is one of the solid tumors where cancer stem cells have been isolated. We have been characterizing glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs), isolated as sphere cultures from patient tumor specimens. The GSCs efficiently form tumor xenografts in the brains of immune-deficient mice that are morphologically heterogeneous and histologically recapitulate the phenotype of the corresponding patient's tumor. They have genetic and epigenetic features that distinguish them from the bulk serum-cultured tumor cells, which are only weakly tumorigenic. Thus, GSCs provide highly representative models for the development of cancer therapeutics.
