I've uploaded a new test version, the last one before an official
cupcake release. New in this version are text selection, search, and
tagging bookmarks to organize them. Just add words in the tag field
when adding a bookmark, and you'll see.

Should be on the website. I've definitely uploaded it there.

I've uploaded another bug fix version, sometimes your bookmarks could
get lost when they were converted to the new format. Hopefully, that's
fixed now. Also, I added code to keep the screen on while Steel is
running, should make it easier to read without having to tap the
screen constantly.

I'm getting a force-close every time I try to open it. I fully
uninstalled the Market version of Steel and deleted prefs.dat as the
website said, then installed the new .apk file. I've uninstalled that
a couple of times and tried reinstalling, all to no avail. Anyone else
having problems with the latest update?

Daniel,

apparently, I added a nice little bug to that version. I think I found
it and fixed it, download the new version from the website and try it
again.
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Michael

No worries. It's a test release, that's what happens!

I just downloaded the updated version and it works great. So much
faster than the builtin one, plus the select mechansm works great.

I couldn't get the search function to work, not sure if that was
supposed to be in this version or not.

Other than that, it looks great. Keep up the excellent work!

Michael,

The bookmark tags are very nice! And thanks for removing the
soft keyboard on focus.

As Daniel reported, I can't get the search to work.

The pie menu now has too many options (up to 8 options on an
image: zoomin zoomout open copy share select find save). It
becomes difficult to select one option. The most common action
(open a link in a new window) which used to be easy to select
(always next to the + option) now takes time to find. When the
pie menu is opened in the upper left of the screen the options
can't be seen by a right handed person. Even though I liked the
pie menu very much when it was introduced, I think it should now
be replaced with a more traditional rectangular menu with a
vertical list of choice. The Open option should be at the top of
this menu, closest to the finger to allow easy selection. I don't
know if the menu should be dismissed by finger up or by forcing a
click outside the menu; it needs experimenting to see which is
more convenient.

If you prefer keeping a pie menu, I suggest not showing the find
and select options on images, to reduce the choices from 8 to 6,
and to move the Open option always next to the + option as it was
to make it easy to find.

When multiple tags are selected there are 3 possible actions: (a)
show the intersection of tags, (b) their union, or (c) selecting
one tag automatically clears the others. You chose (a) which I
think is the least desirable of the 3. I would prefer (c).

When editing existing bookmarks, the Add button should be renamed
into an Edit button. It should then be possible to remove a label
from a bookmark. Currently the only way to remove a label is to
delete the bookmark and recreate it.

The "home" tag could behave like a normal tag if you allow
multiple entries in this tag. You would then open several windows
at start. You could suppress the special "Home" option in "Add
bookmark"; it is now confusing because it seems redundant with
the "home" label. Also the Home option only works when adding a
new bookmark, not when editing an existing one. You can end up
with two different bookmarks with the same name and same url,
one marked with the star and one without.

There are two ways to go to the home page: through the pie menu
Home option and through the bookmark "home" label. I would remove
Home from the pie menu to simplify it.

There are two ways to force a reload: through the pie menu and
at the top right of the address bar. I would also remove it from
the pie menu.

New bookmarks are added at the bottom of the list. Moving them
towards the top can only be done one step at a time which is
quite slow. Drag and drop to move entries would be nice. But this
becomes less of an issue with tags.

When a tag is selected in the bookmark list, the "move up" menu
option does not move the entry up, it only clears the tag.

Thanks again for all the work you've put into Steel!

Ok, so Friday night I got the update for the new operating system.

So I tried to use steel and this is what happens:
Open steel page start to load. Address bar not visible, I can only see
a black bar. As soon as the address bar and the menu on the bottom
dissapear the screen get covered with a dark grey layer. I can barely
see the page. If I touch the little quarter moon on the right bottom
and the address bar shows up I am then able to see the page again. And
then it goes grey again when it disappears. I cannot really test the
rest o features. Please fix. This was the only browser that I used
(except if I had to look at maps. It never quite loaded them right)
the picture was always too big and took to long to load)

Thanks for all the hard work.

Marco, as you can see from the rest of this discussion, there is a
test version of steel for cupcake available from the website, and a
release in the market expected at the end of the week.

Michael,

do you think I should download from the website or wait until the end
of the week? What is going to be easier considering I am pretty new at
this ?

Thanks for the heads up.

Just try the one from the website, no need to do anything, just
download and install.
If it doesn't work you can still wait ;)

Michael
,
got the download from the website, thanks.
one thing i noticed is that it no longer autorotates. I am not sure if
its one of the setting or a bug.
is anyone else having the problem. The screen rotates when I open the
keyboard and close it but no longer does it do it when the phone is
rotated.
Please let me know (no rush) if I need to do something.

Thanks.

p.s. thanks for the hard work.

Thanks for developing steel. Been a fan since the beginning. What
makes steel seem faster than the default browser? Great work. Will be
testing this version out, one thing I've noticed so far is when I
searched backwards the 1st instance is hidden by the find window.
Also, I had to scroll down in order for the word to be selected/
highlighted.

Seems like a really stable build on the download page right now.
Currently using it to post. Haven't had any force closes yet, I
usually get them when switched/opening a new window, but I haven't
used it extensively.

I'm having a little trouble with the onscreen keyboard. When I want
to close it, I hit the back button like in native applications and it
has no effect on navigation. I believe it is acting as a 'back'
button when entering text, and it makes it difficult to enter, for
example, a username and password.

I love the new bookmark tags!

When a final version appears on the Market, will my version downloaded
from your site automatically notify me of an update or will it require
and uninstall?

OK last thing; I know people don't love a ton of options on the pie
menu, but an exit button somewhere would be fantastic.

DK84,

long press the back button to bring up the exit dialog.

You should get notified about the new version, I will increase the
version number for the official version, the test build runs on the
same as the market version

Soft keyboard and back button still have issues.

When I tried to download a file, there was a download progress screen
that showed up at the bottom of the screen. i tried to cancel the
download by touching the "x" in the overlay. but it kept opening the
slide out menu on the bottom where the bookmarks and open window
options are. so i had to kill Steel via task manager since it seemed
to have locked up.

JP,
thanks, I'll look into that, apparently touch events got passed
through.
