I am not 100% sure but I think Steel is creating problems with Donut.
I have a G1 and got the OTA update yesterday. I immediately and
persistently had three problems:

- The updated Google search bar would not work (mostly -- it worked
every once in a while).
- The Browser app force closed whenever I tried to open it.
- Whenever I tried to return to the Home screen (and sometimes even
when I was in other apps), I would get a repeated force close of
android.process.acore. The only solution was to power the phone off
and on again.

After much experimentation with Contact/GMail synching (I do not use
the Calendar), wallpaper, and other things, I started uninstalling
apps to see if I could find the conflict. After about 15-20, I had no
luck and decided to do a Factory Reset and start reinstalling apps.
The critical one seemed to be Steel. (Because it is one of my
favorite apps and I started reinstalling the ones I used most first, I
reinstalled it pretty early.) After I ran it for the first time, the
problem recurred. Uninstalling it made the problem go away.

I was using 0.1.1 (Cupcake version). I have a plain vanilla phone.
No root, alternate home screens, etc.

Thank you.

I got the 1.6 update pushed to my phone yesterday, right when I was
downloading the 1.6 SDK. I did a new build of Steel with the 1.6 SDK
and everything seems to work fine.
It needs a little more work here and there, but I will try to get it
out this week.

Thank you.

Any chance of a quick blog post and/or notice on www.kolbysoft.com on
this topic? I could have saved myself a lot of trouble yesterday if I
had known to uninstall Steel and wait.

Jonathan,
I've updated the blog. And while I had several reports already about
Steel not working with Donut, I didn't know what the issue was. And
since I'm using the next version already on my phone, I couldn't check
the issue directly.

It seems that there was a small issue in one of the layouts of Steel,
something that the 1.5 release didn't care, and which is now
triggering a force close, if I interpret the log correctly.

Either way, new version is on its way, plus there is other, much
bigger news coming soon,

I have a similar problem since I got the 1.6 update. Whenever I try to
oped an youtube link on a webpage the browser crashes. It used to
bring up the option to view or play now it just says The application
Steel has stopped unexpectedly. I'm on the G1

If it makes any difference... I've just installed Steel on Donut and
it seems to work just fine.

Model: HTC Tatto
Firmware: 1.6
Baseband: 13.29.55...
Kernel: 2.6.29...
Build: 1.67...
Software Version: 1.67...

I work for an operator hence I've left out the irrelevant internal
version details above.

Now I just need to work out how to set the home page... can't find
anywhere to enter that!

Thanks for the good work! :)

Assuming posts are checked before release so hope my last one
survived.

Nevertheless...

Calling a bookmark "Home" or "home" in (my) 1.6 does not allow you to
use the Home button... clicking the button just does nothing (well the
button highlights but no other browser activity).

Again, on my handset some of the Steel text boxes require two clicks
to bring up the soft keyboard rather than just one click.

Downloads seem to be working fine for me.

Dave,

the problem seems to appear only when you try and download a file.
As far as setting the homepage is concerned, it is done via a tag
called "home".
Go to the bookmnarks page, long press the desired bookmark, and select
edit. Type "home" in the tags field and save.
You should see the star next to the bookmark, indicating that it's the
homepage.

lol re home, sometimes I don't deserve _any_ support!

Yes, I called, not tagged a bookmark 'home', of course when I followed
the instructions and _tagged_ it 'home' it works as intended.

Now, downloads - yes I understood this. However, when I click on a
file link it opens a dialogue in either a save (with filename) or save
as (without filename) window with cancel and save buttons. Double
click to enter/edit filename, click save and the file is downloaded
to /sdcard/steel/downloads/[filename.ext]. Is this not how it's
expected to behave?

btw: I love! the link long press function!

I found the solution, of a sort. If I install even the newest (0.1.7)
version of Steel, I still get errors, including an immediate reboot at
the end of the installation. However, if I completely wipe and
rebuild the phone (install RC29 and re-upgrade all the way to Donut),
it works fine. It seems as if the older version breaks the phone in a
way that is not otherwise fixable but if you start completely fresh,
it works.
