A new version of Steel (0.1.6) has been released. It should fix the
issues with Android 1.6, but at the same time, should still be
compatible with 1.5.
You are so awesome! I was going nuts using the standard browser!

its a no go, Mike. As soon as the download completed my phone went to the black android boot up screen
After it booted, i still was not able to access the search function. I loaded a web page using steel and as soon as I exited the phone constantly forced closed and I had to power off and back on...
Any ideas?

No, no idea what that would be all about. Do you have an sdcard in the
phone? We've tried it on several phones, and there were no such
issues.
Can you get to the phone's log?

Without having an Android development kit installed, that's next to
impossible,
However, what we can do is the following:
move your bookmarks (inside the steel folder, a file called
bookmarks.txt or something like that), and any downloads you have to
another folder or a pc.
Then try to erase the steel folder on the sdcard.
Start Steel again and see what it does. If it works, exit steel by
long-pressing the back key, and confirm.
Then copy the bookmarks file back into the steel folder and restart
steel. You might have to re-adjust your settings again.

Idk about the other guy, but my version is running great minus 1 minor
flaw. Everytime I open it...which is only via Twidroid or gmail so
far... it gives the force close/wait option. Naturally, I click wait,
and it works perfect after that.
I like the new location of the loading bar and exit switched from bot
to top.
Great job... I been wit Steel practically since it came out!

Uhhh.... forget the force close/wait problem... it was just too many
apps and movin too fast.
BTW the only glaring omission from the Steel browser, is lack of a
history tab or option in the menu. And I love the new Menu although
I'm not quite sure what "Change Colors" does yet.

Ok, so far I don't seem to be experiencing the force close anymore or the
trips to the boot up screen. What I still am having issue with is the search
function. Most specifically, the Google widget.
I tap it and nothing happens, no cursor, no soft keyboard, nada. After
attempting to access the widget, if I go into another application (any
application) then exit it, I get to the last screen I was on with the soft
keyboard up and a "mock" search widget with the entry field, a "ghost"
button to the right of it and the Google microphone for voice search to the
right of that. (My widget is on screen 3)
The voice search seems to work while the entry field does not.
If I tap the screen, it all disappears.
And I kinda like the having the exit on the bottom of the screen.. Any
chance it can become an option on the orientation of that?

Unfortunately, I can confirm most of what has been posted here:
- Involuntary reboot immediately after installation. This happened
twice. I uninstalled and reinstalled.
- Search bar does not work.
- Built-in browser force closes when I try to open it.
In addition, while not the same sorts of bugs, the + and - on the pie
menu did not change the zoom of any page I tried and I could never get
Select on the Page menu to do anything, although maybe I was using it
wrong. Nothing I did after clicking it seemed to select any text.
I have: G1, Android 1.6, SD card. I tried copying the bookmarks file
to another directory and deleting the steel directory. That did not
change anything. I never moved the bookmarks file back. I figured it
would just be a potential complication until I got things working.
I just posted a new version to the market. The issues with select and
the trackball moving away from input field should be sorted.
I have really no idea what is going on with the rebooting of the phone
for some people.
Search bar doesn't work? Which search bar? The search widget works for
me, voice search never worked with Steel.

Thanks a lot for the new version! I really like the bubble
showing the page load progress, it avoids the disturbing
page movement when the address bar disappears.
There is one big regression for me: opening a link in a new
window now requires 5 actions (long press, move finger to
select Link, release finger, look for "Open" link and move
finger there, click on Open). This is too long for the
action that I'm doing most often. The most disturbing is
the need to look for the open link. With the previous
version the open link was right next to the finger,
I could find it without thinking. Now opening a link
in a new window takes more time with Steel than with the
default browser!
I guess why you made this change: to reduce the number of
visible options in the pie chart if the "Zoom on links" is
set. But this option "Zoom on links" is now useless and
indeed you ignore it and always display the zoom options.
If you respect this option as in Steel 0.1.1, you have only
3 choices in the pie chart for normal links (as you have now
in Steel 0.1.6) and only 4 choices for image links.
I see four possible solutions:
(a) Respect the "Zoom on links" option and if it unset behave
exactly as in 0.1.1: only zooming options on long press
outside a link, only the open/copy/share options without
the extra menu indirection on long press on a link. (It
would be silly to have only one "Link" option in the pie
menu.)
(b) Supress the "Zoom on links" option and always display
the zoom options, but allow a long press on the "Link"
to open in a new window without an extra menu.
(c) As (b) but do not even force selecting the Link option:
a long press on a link, kept long pressed without moving
the finger after the pie menu appears, opens the link in
a new window.
(d) Suppress the pie chart completely, separate link actions
and zooming. For long press on a link display only the
link menu. For long press outside a link or long press
on the bubble (even if the bubble is on a link) display
zoom buttons as in the default browser. This would still
fix the most annoying feature of the default browser
(the zoom buttons popping up all the time).
My preference would be (c) because opening a link in a new
window couldn't be simpler.
The above is the only important issue I have with Steel 1.6.
Here are a few other issues.
The zoom is too fast for me. I often end up with a
ridiculously large font because I pressed a fraction of a
second too long. It is very difficult to get the desired
zoom level because you must time your finger press with very
good accuracy, and there is always some lag between the
finger press and the actual zooming (worse if the OS decides
to do garbage collection at that time, which you can't
control in Steel). The zoom speed should be at least divided
by 2, maybe more. The zoom speed of the default browser
looks roughly right to me.
The "select" option in the page menu no longer works, as
someone else already reported. (Actually I managed to
get it to work once but I can't reproduce this.)
When clicking on a link, the current page is refreshed
first: the top of the page is displayed first for a moment,
then it opens the new page. This always happens on
http://www.google.com/reader/m and sometimes on other
pages. It does not happen with the default browser. This
makes opening a new page slower than it should be
because of the extra screen refresh.
When one download finishes, it would be nice to have a Toast
indicating this. Also it would be nice to be able to open
the downloaded file from within the Downloads page, for
example to install an .apk.
The Youtube download option seems to have disappeared, on
both www.youtube.com and m.youtube.com. However you can get
the same effect by creating a bookmark with contents
javascript:(function(){url='http://deturl.com/download- video.js';document.body.appendChild(document.createElement
('script')).src=url;})();
(Bookmarklet available on http://deturl.com. It works only on the
desktop version.)
In Find mode, changing the orientation gives
an incorrect display of the string matches.
When connecting to a site with an untrusted certificate
such as https://wifi.free.fr it would be nice to
offer the choice of accepting the certificate (as the
default browser does) instead of just displaying
a blank screen.
The Image menu for an image without a link contains Open,
Save, Copy, Share, but only Save does something. The other
options should not be shown or should do something.
When a tag is selected in the bookmark list, the "move up"
menu option does not move the entry up, it only clears the
tag.
> Without having an Android development kit installed,
> that's next to impossible,
It's actually very easy. Just ask people to install
the SendLog app from the market, as I do on
http://gailly.net/android/HotspotConnect.html There are two other apps both called "Log Collector"
but I prefer SendLog.
I installed again at about noon CDT today and got the same results.
Are you incrementing the version number in the Android Market? I am
still seeing 0.1.6. Is that what I should be seeing?
I meant the search widget. Voice search always worked for me under
Android 1.5. I had Steel installed. I don't know that it worked "with"
Steel in the sense of opening results in Steel but it worked with
Steel installed on the phone. Now the search widget works only
occasionally at best with Steel installed. I am not sure I tested
voice search while I had Steel installed.
Thanks.

Any chance the apk could be uploaded to http://www.kolbysoft.com/ or
the files section here? I'm using the new market and Steel's not in
there yet (any version) - this is the same for many (read: most)
apps).
Thanks if it's possible!

I found 0.1.7 just now but had the same results. Is this the newly
updated version or is there a 0.1.8 that may fix the Donut problems
for those of us who are having them?
Thank you.

I get several reports about search not working, but it works fine on
my phone. It is hard for me to try and fix a problem that I don't have
before me.
Here is an idea, there is an app called SendLog in the market. Could
you install it, and try to crash the search as you described. Then
send me the log after the crash. Maybe I can make some sense of it.
I assume you have enough memory left on both phone and sdcard?
I will give it a try. I do not know what "enough" is but I have 20 MB
memory free (before installing Steel or SendLog) and 214 MB on the SD
card. I would think that should be enough.
