Lost bookmarks (whole category!)

As I was working on adding some bookmarks, one of my categories (and
all the myriad bookmarks within it) just disappeared right in front of
my eyes! Can you please help me recover these bookmarks and provide
suggestions on how to prevent this from occurring in the future?
Apparently others seem to have recently reported similar occurrences,
so is a fix on the way?
