Weed education days

Hi SBCG members,


Weeds are flourishing throughout our garden and are about to go to
seed. This is a time sensitive issue, because once they go to seed,
those seeds will spread and we will have a serious weed problem next
year.


We have organized an effort to deal with the problem. We set up three
times this week, when some of us will be at the garden to help people
identify weeds and to collaborate on a weed management. Please come by
to learn more about identifying and managing weeds and to help
actually weeding both your plot and the common paths and perimeter.
Hatch has offered to do a short weed tour of the garden and then let
people start identify weeds themselves.


We are thinking of times after work, say 6-8pm, on Wednesday and
Thursday, and again on Saturday, noon to 2pm.


We want to make this an activity that will benefit everyone and the
garden as a whole. This is a great chance to learn more about
identifying weeds as well as their harmful and beneficial properties.
Any other member may join us as "shift" leaders on any of these dates
in future weeks!!


Gabey will be making a local weed identification guide for our
bulletin board, and bringing a digital camera to our meetings to
“shoot” weeds with!!


It has also been suggested that we have more regular “garden
gatherings”, say once a week, for a rich exchange of information,
ideas, and plants, etc. I’m sure there’s a lot we can learn from each
other. And it would be greatly appreciated if any master gardeners
among us were willing to pass on their valuable experience.


The first three dates for weeding knowledge and action are this week!!

Hi all,

I will be in the garden tomorrow morning - say 730 or 8 until 930 and
will weed then. If the picts aren't up on the new board (thanks
Gabey) - please just let me know where to concentrate my efforts.
Unfortunately my work schedule this week runs late, then I'm off
Friday for ~10 days. I'd love to help before I leave - so again,
point me in the right direction and I'll start weeding away.

We are headed out of town, and I was wondering if folks might water
the containers that are in the garden, near the fence and water
source. That would be amazing if anyone gets a minute to give them a
drink!

Hey Dan, Thanks! We have been missing each other in the garden; I'm
there often in the mornings...and was there on Sat. for a spell...We
should make a time to meet in the garden soon to connect!

It would be great if you could water my plot if you think of it. I
was there this morning to do it and am headed over again tonight for
one last watering spree...

I'm out of town through Sunday but some eve. next week or weekend
would be great...I've been watching your beets grow; they are looking
very fine as are your squash/zuke/some viney thing...

        Yes, I'll meet you tomorrow in the garden to help you identify what to pull.  And when in any doubt, we'll leave it in.
        And to anyone else who'd also like to stop by tomorrow morning too, great -- but still also try to come the three dates our weed assistance volunteers will be there !!!  I'm heading out now for shift #1

Hello, I'm Catherine. I don't think we've met in person yet, but I have the garden plot just next to yours, next to the water cabinet.
I will be out of town next week from Tues. Aug. 5 through Saturday Aug. 9. If you are around, could you please water my plot whenever you are there to water yours? If you're not around, don't worry about it, I'll try sending a message to the email list for a volunteer.
