Abstract:
Anyone who has ever needed to move a database from one server to another has experienced the pain of dealing with mismatched SQL Server authentication logins. In this session, I will describe what a contained database is and how this new 2012 feature can ease your pain. I'll look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of this feature and talk about the new SQL Users with Passwords and Windows users. I'll demonstrate how to create a contained database and how to connect to it. Then I will demonstrate the process of making an existing database contained. If time permits, I’ll also talk about the way contained databases handle differences in collation between the contained database and tempdb.
Bio:
Sharon has worked with SQL Server since its first release, more than 20 years. Her major areas of specialization are database design and performance tuning. Sharon has a consulting practice and also teaches and writes courses for Learning Tree International where she is SQl server curriculum manager.. She is the lead author of Professional SQL Server 6.5 Database Administration (Wrox Press) and the author of SQL Server 7 Database Administration, (New Riders). She is an avid supporter of PASS and has presented at numerous PASS conferences. She has also presented at Microsoft TechED and DevConnections. She was named a Microsoft MVP in in 2001 and was an MVP for SQL Server until 2004. In her spare time, she enjoys being bossed around by her three cats.
