I've tried the MS malware removal tool and Verizon anti-spy (CA).

default Search Assistant, Homepages, and any other default settings in the
browser sometimes depending on severity. Generally they redirect searches or
hijack your searches to another search engine which may include automatic
redirecting of your browser to malicious content websites to infect the
machine with more malwares and the changed default homepage may have
installed drive-by malware installations.
So the bottom line is after determining a malware toolbar install - it is
best to perform a full scan immediately to detect other malwares...

apparently. I have not found the MS products to be particularly
robust, I suppose you get what you pay for. I downloaded a product
called Stopzilla after my initial post and it managed to root out 30
programs the others missed and in doing so solved the problem.

A lot of times the same infections are the cause of targeted spams. If they
don't know what you are doing - they have to guess.

I am blunt in recommending security shareware - software for sale. When it
comes to an actual purchase I will only recommend the best in antispyware
protection because it is supposed to be the same when you buy antivirus. You
wouldn't want a second best antivirus program that lets in some stuff and
blocks others, right? Right - viruses and worms are very, very dangerous
mainly to actual computer operating systems and other softwares. The
security is actually secondary there in protection - like a password
stealing virus. In short terms, who cares if they know a password to
somewhere if the infection destroyed files everywhere and corrupted half of
the Windows Operating System and the computer doesn't work anymore - would
be one attitude, and in other words the actual destruction preceeds security
breaches in immediate concerns.
So it is the same in antispyware software. You don't want to pay for
something that is going to allow some to look in and others no to. I believe
the title of the top world test is called VB100 which is the most valued
testing results that antivirus companies post. This is what put the
aggressive hot dog Kapersky over Symantec Norton as number one in the world.
Antispyware is achieving this - namely, Webroot Spysweeper (industry
leader) - 100 percent detection and intrusion blocking and removal. There
are only three actual programs that work as expected - or as you would buy
Norton Antivirus, which has been the most trusted name in security. They are
Webroot Spysweeper and Trend Micro Antispyware which I personally tested as
best as a consumer. Included is CounterSpy. That's it... NO ONE else is in
the same ballpark - or at least yet, and it has been this way for several
years. I personally tested 24 months ago and the top two I rate found four
times as much as CounterSpy. According to world tests, they now rate it
(CounterSpy) as side by side in the very least. They (CounterSpy) must have
come a long way, and I personally don't believe it because of the superior
shields in both Trend and Webroot which CounterSpy does not have to the best
of my knowledge unless they upgraded that.
Shockingly Emsisoft A-Squared (Antimalware) has twice the definitions that
Webroot does as the industry leader in sales and popularity. Webroot is at
over 150,000. A-Squared is at over 300,000. So including their heuristics
which are the same as having shields practically - they are actually the
best kept secret in the security industry like the others used to be before
becoming so well known and used and performance trusted.
The Stopzilla, PC Tools SpyDoctor, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, SuperAntispyware and
more are all runner ups - second best fantastic programs. Basically the
ratings are 95 to 100 percent are best. 85 to 95 percent are second best.
But again, in security you have to be protected period. In antispyware it is
not uncommon to use several programs or utilities.
Even though it is second best, of all the free home versions Microsoft
Windows Defender is the ONLY one that offers real time protection (like paid
shareware) and is why it gets recommended to unprotected machines to
immediately install to block malware communication and further malware
installation.
And so there you are - your own Consumer Test:

Side by side with Windows Defender, that would be remarkable as both
programs are not rated as number one but I would bet most "positives" were
most likely Tracking Cookies as opposed to 30 full blown spyware
installations. For Windows Defender that is too unbelievable - that it did
not find 30 spyware applications. Those kind of results we all know would be
for the "Second Fifty Programs" in tests of antispyware programs - that poor
of a performance. Do you remember the names of the threats ?

free for personal use and mostly on place 1-3 of the best virus and
malware/rootkits scanners.
It is german (which is not bad, though many trojan and virus coders
concentrate on international english programs

applications.... are you sure they weren't just tracking cookies ? That is
not uncommon to find that many - but again Windows Defender would NOT miss
30 Tracking Cookies. Are you sure your results were correct ? It doesn't
sound right....
You may have been looking at up to 30 Files and Registry entries by ONE
spyware installation that Windows Defender did not detect - NOT 30 spyware
applications which would be a minimum of about 60 to 100 files and registry
items found - but much closer to up to 300 entries for 30 installations.
