creating sprites

Firebug tells me to

". . . The following images served from your site should be combined
into as few images as possible using CSS sprites. . . "

However the SpriteMe panel although showing the same "non-sprited
images" - also says no sprite suggestions and I am left wondering how
get SpriteMe to actually do that and spite my images and thereby
keeping the red icon alert off the firebug page and keeping google
happy with my page speed.

Thanks for any help.

It's actually not Firebug telling you that - it's the Page Speed add-
on. Page Speed and SpriteMe are two different tools built by different
teams with different code, so it's not surprising that the code is
different and finds different recommendations. You can't force
SpriteMe to see images that it doesn't recognize. You'll have to build
this sprite manually.
