Hello.
Recently I met a bug: MS Office 2003 read files, generated with S::WE,
and 2007 did not. In fact, MSO2007 read them, but after "restoring",
and with all nice markup (column sizes, fonts and colors) lost.
Solution was simple: do not use workbook method "set_properties".
I consider it a bug in module, but still there's a workaround.

The problem was in my editor. Setting the file encoding to UTF-8 fix
this ussue.

Hi,

It looks like the encoding of the program file isn't in UTF8. What
editor are you using and how do you tell it which encoding the file is
in?

For example, when I copied your example program into emacs it noticed
the Hebrew text and prompted for which encoding to use. I chose UTF-8,

P.S. You don't need the second argument in the add_worksheet() call.
And I adjusted the column width in the example which might not be what
you want.

Hi,

Perl needs to be told in some way that the string it is dealing with
is utf8.

This is generally set when reading the file in (see for example the
unicode_polish_utf8.pl program) or within the program using Encode.pm.

Hi,

Spreadsheet::WriteExcel doesn't have a calculation engine, so it
cannot calculate the values of an Excel formula like this.

As a workaround you could keep track of the data that you are
COUNTIFing in Perl and use the value accordingly.

i often do something like:

$wks->write(6, 1, "=COUNTIF('Tab 7'!A7:A$offset,\"X\")", $formats
{normal_integer});

This counts up how many items in cells A7 through A-whatever in some
other tab have the letter X in them.

is there a way to "get at" or "store" the result of the COUNTIF in a
variable? so i could use it for some logic further down in the code?

That is indeed true.

I haven't looked at it in a while but "external formulas" was one of
those hard to do features.

I've released version 0.19 of OLE::Storage_Lite to CPAN. Upgrading to
this version should solve these Windows 7 issues when using
set_properties().

This also fixes similar problems that other applications such as
Gnumeric have with set_properites() WriteExcel files.

Hi John,

I have installed the new version of OLE::Storage and it now works.

The properties.xls file generated by properties.pl opens fine, as well
as files generated by my application.

It turns out that the problem was caused by an external patch that I
applied to the OLE::Storage_Lite module shortly after I took over
maintainership. In 2004!!.

It only occurs when creating OLE documents (in this case Excel files)
less than 7MB and only on Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit).

Thanks, that indicates that the problem occurs when using
OLE::Storage_Lite for files less than 7MB. In general this only
happens in S::WE when set_properties() is in use. (It may be possible
that the error doesn't occur for files over 4k that use set_properties
() but that probably isn't worth testing).

I have experimented with some of the examples, and have found that it
is using set_properties which causes the problem under Windows 7.

The sheet generated by the example program properties.pl will
demonstrate it for you.

I have just come across this issue myself.

It has nothing to do with 64 bit. It is a Windows 7 issue.

When I open a file generated by Spreadsheet::Writeexcel on Windows 7
in either Excel 2007 or 2003, I get the "Excel found unreadable
content" error. I can open the same file under XP, Vista or OSX

I run the 2.25 version under windows 2008 server x64 using Strawberry
Perl 5.8.x and it runs just fine, producing excel files that open
without issue...Have you tried the XP compatibility mode in Win 7?

Hi,

There aren't any 64-bit Windows issues that I am aware of.

The "Unreadable Content" error is usually an indication that the file
is corrupted in some way. A common cause of this on Windows is FTPing
a file in non binary mode. Check that the file size on the host system
is the same on the target system after it is transferred.

Thanks for the detailed report.

I think that there is probably more than one issue here but the basic
problem is that due to the merged ranges or cell borders the height of
the rows is different from their default and as a result WriteExcel
doesn't calculate the correct image height.

There seems to be some undocumented limit on the hyperlinks in Excel.
I was able to reproduce this using Excel itself.

I doesn't appear to be a limit to the number of hyperlinks but
probably to the amount of apace and hence memory that they take up.
