What is the definition of a sport boat for this group?
What are the size limits?
Is there a list of what boats are considered sport boats?

We're in the process to determine the group. First we need sport boat
owners to sign up , then we can deveop a concensus. What do you sail, &
where are you from.

Not sure that a Bendytoy 27.7 would even remotely be considered a
sportboat - not even sure there are any of those in the US?

SA 525 sqf. Disp. 6116 lb. SA/D 25 up 57 down

Let's not try to get the list to inclusive as it will defy the purpose
of getting to fun racing. Boats like the Bendytoy fits fine with the
rest of the leadbellies.

I think the around 30 foot boats should be included - division breaks
will take care of the speed differencies. Main reason for inclusion:
numbers and similar performance characteristics.

I'm deployed to the gulf now but when I get back (June) I would like to
become an active part of the group. Ultimate 24... Don't see it on
the list.

Not even close. We need to pick a set of numbers that define sportboats
裏I think John Collins had some good thoughts on this in Sailing World a
couple years back 裏and stick with them.
Some feelings might get hurt and we might lose potential membership, but
what's the point of this organization otherwise?
And just having an assym. chute doesn't do it. You can stick one of
those on a Swan 40. In my mind -- and Collins' -- boats like the J/80,
J/105 etc. simply aren't sportboats. J/90 is probably the only J-boat
that could qualify.

I sail the prototype U20 based upon a Hotfoot 20 in San Diego and would
like to sign up. I think a boat that can plane upwind should be a good
candidate!

Hey Jay,

I remember that article - pretty good. As far as I remember his
criteria were SA/D (uphill) higher than 30 and D/L under 100. Am I
right?

Bendytoy is def outside the D/L ratio !! SCRATCHED

This is a link sent in by Heriberto in SAnarchy that has some good
observations, I don't think we considered it closely enuf

http://www.phrfne.org/page/823

speshly the SBR / IRC bit table information, it confirms in favour of
IRC, it appears C1720 is the Pommy 'control' boat.

This is valid too; from phrfNE

IRC also has a separate rule for "sport boats" called the Sport Boat
Rule (SBR). Many of the boats rated by this rule are not what we would
normally consider to be true sport boats. Among these are the J80,
Tripp 26, and Beneteau Platu 25. On purpose, the SBR ratings are to a
different scale than the IRC ratings so they cannot be mixed. As above
you should look at the deltas between the boats and not the magnitudes.
A constant of 565 seems to give a reasonable conversion for one end of
the boat spectrum. This constant has no effect on the deltas. The
following is an SBR to PHRF comparison table using the formula:

PHRF = (600/TCC) - 565

SBR/IRC/PHRF Comparison
Boat SBR TCC PHRF from SBR IRC TCC PHRF from IRC Actual PHRF
see the table on the above link could cut/past successfully

This shows that true sport boats, like the Melges 24, are much more
severely treated compared to the boats like the J80 by the SBR than
under PHRF. This is likely due to common sport boat features such as
large mainsail roach and low displacement to length ratios.
