ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pt. Nayan Ghosh

One of India’s front-ranking Tabla players, virtuoso Pandit Nayan Ghosh is held in high esteem for his innate artistry, rich repertoire, tonal brilliance and suave musicianship. His immense talent and sensitive music set him apart in the contemporary music scene. He is already regarded as an important reference source for today’s younger musicians.

Widely acknowledged as a brilliant soloist and a refined accompanist, he is considered one of the foremost repositories of the priceless works of the Farukhabad, Delhi, Ajrada and Lucknow styles. He received intensive and immaculate training from his late father, the renowned maestro ‘Padmabhushan’ Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, considered an important musical figure of the 20th century. He also received invaluable guidance from the legendary Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa. Nayan’s elder uncle was the legendary flautist Pannalal Ghosh. Pt. Nayan Ghosh grew up listening to such maestros like Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa, Ustad Amir Hussain Khan, Ustad Jahangir Khan, Ustad Habibuddin Khan, Ustad Inam Ali Khan and several others.

Since 1974, Nayan's extensive concerts and lecture tours in the capital cities of Europe, U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Morocco besides at prestigious International Music Festivals, universities, radio and television throughout the world have won him rich accolades.

Primarily known in India as a formidable Tabla soloist, known for his authentic and traditional Tabla Baaj, Nayan has offered eloquent accompaniments to stalwarts like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Late Nikhil Banerjee, Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Ust. Amjad Ali Khan, Ust. Salamat Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Pt Buddhadev Dasgupta, Smt. Sharan Rani, Dr. Rajeev Taranath, Ust. Shamim Ahmed Khan, Ust. Rais Khan, Pt. Ramnarayan, Dr. L, Subramaniam, Smt. Girija Devi, Pt. Jagdish Prasad, Pt. Dinkar Kaikini, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty, Ust. Rashid Khan, Pt. Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Ust. Shahid Parvez, Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee and a galaxy of eminent instrumentalists and vocalists.

Nayan Ghosh is also acclaimed around the world as one of India’s finest Sitar players, which again renders a unique feature to this rare and multi-faceted artiste. In May 1998, Nayan Ghosh received the Achievement Award from the Governor of California, Gray Davis in Los Angeles. Like his late father, who closely interacted with legends like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck, Nayan Ghosh too has experimented with Jazz figures like saxophonist Kidd Jordan and pianist Henry Butler of New Orleans, the renowned Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita and guitarist Kazumi Watanabe. Over the years, he has also taught as a distinguished visiting professor at such bodies like the Kent State University and the Emory University.

He has to his credit besides CD recordings with well known labels worldwide, excellent coverages in leading international dailies like the New York Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Tribune de Geneve, Kansas City Times, the Sydney Morning Herald, Telegraph and the Times of India. Presently, as Director of India’s leading music academy, the SANGIT MAHABHARATI in Juhu, Mumbai, Nayan is imparting advanced training to numerous young aspiring musicians. He is also presently a Distinguished Guest Professor at IIT-Bombay, teaching tabla, sitar, vocal and musicology at the Cell for Human Values. Nayan has played a vital role in the completion of his late father’s magnum-opus THE OXFORD ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF THE MUSIC OF INDIA, which was published worldwide in 2011 after a full 50 years of intensive and extensive research.
