Hello everyone,
 
            Well, the Christmas Season has arrived! With it comes pickpockets, scams, and other related offenses. The best protection against pickpockets is to carry your I.D. and credit cards in your front pocket on an inside jacket pocket, if possible. Avoid keeping all your important documents or cards in a purse or wallet. In a large crowd be aware and hold your purse tight.
 
            If someone is soliciting money over the phone don’t give out your credit card numbers or social security number. If something doesn’t seem right – it isn’t. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!
 
            The Police Department has stepped up patrols in the downtown area as well. Every effort has been made to put foot patrols out in the areas to deter street crime during this season. Eight additional Officers have been assigned to Southern Station for this purpose. A police command center has been set up on Market Street; feel free to stop by at the 800 block of Market. Officers will be handing out safety information and tips for the Holiday Season. Bart Police, SFPD and allied agencies have a pickpocket task force hard at work too during the Holiday Season.
 
            Just a couple of weeks ago the Narcotics Detail conducted an operation in the Southern Police District. 134 suspects dealing various narcotics were arrested. An interesting note is only 36 of them reside in San Francisco!
 
            The Traffic Company has also been out meeting driver’s and issuing citations; 38 last week.
 
            Crime data for the month of October shows a reduction of robbery, assaults, and theft from the same time last year. Your Officers at Southern Station are doing their best to keep it this way; a few examples are listed below: 
         
 
 
Tuesday 11/27/07 Officer Walker was dispatched to the report of a purse snatch in the area of Folsom and 3rd Street. Officer Walker responded and was able to ascertain a detailed description from a very shaken up victim. Officer Walker broadcast the description for other responding SFPD units. Officers Michaud and Michaud were in the area of Maiden Lane and Stockton Street when they were advised by a Good Samaritan who witnessed the purse snatch and followed the suspect to that location that the suspect was nearby. Offices Michaud and Michaud arrested the suspect. Sergeant Warnke and Sergeant Gardner responded and assisted in this investigation.
 
Wednesday 11/28/07 Officers Pedroza and Gordon were dispatched to Guy and Lansing Street regarding a person who was looking into parked cars. The Officers responded to the scene but were unable to locate the suspicious person. They contacted the homeowner who first called the police and the homeowner stated that the person was hiding in the bushes nearby. With a more detailed search the Officers located the person hiding inside the bushes. The suspect was wanted on a theft warrant and booked into County Jail. With the alert homeowner and the hardworking Officers there were no auto break-ins in the area that night.
 
Friday 11/23/07 Officers Tacchini, Wilhelm and Kugler were near the Metreon on patrol when they saw a street robbery in progress. The Officers acted quickly and were able to subdue the robbery suspect before things got out of hand. The Officers also retrieved the stolen property taken in the robbery. A very young victim who was not hurt in this incident was happy to get his property back.
 
Wednesday 11/28/07 Officer Constantine was on bicycle patrol in the area of 970 Mission when he saw a person casing a vehicle. When it became apparent that the suspect was going to break into the car Officer Constantine hurried over and stopped the suspect before he could break the window. When Officer Constantine questioned the suspect about his identity, the veteran Officer knew the suspect was not being truthful. As it turns out the Officer’s hunch was correct the suspect was wanted as a parole violator.
 
Thursday 11/22/07 Numerous Southern Station Patrol Officers were dispatched to the Jack in the Box restaurant on Mission Street regarding a robbery in progress. Officers Oryall and Leung were first on scene and were able to get a description of the suspect who just fled on foot. Officers Cronin and Wilson saw a suspect matching the description nearby on Mission Street. When the officers attempted to stop the suspect the suspect punched the Officer in the face and took off running. The Officers pursued the suspect who ran through the Yerba Buena Gardens. The Officers were able to catch and arrest the suspect who continued to resist and assault the Officers. Thankfully the Officers were not injured, this time, and all of the stolen property was returned to the restaurant.
 
Monday 11/26/07 Officer Martin was foot patrol in the area of 5th and Harrison Street when he saw a person standing in traffic on the freeway off-ramp soliciting from vehicles using a cardboard sign. Officer Martin took action and determined that the person had an arrest warrant for that exact violation. Officer Martin again cited this person and transported him to County Jail to clear-up his existing warrant.
 
Monday 11/26/07 Officers Daza, Simmons, and Sergeant Thoshinsky responded to 12th Street to investigate a stabbing. When the Officers arrived on scene they located a victim who was bleeding very badly from a gash to his neck. The Officers quickly administered first aid and called for paramedics to respond. The officers were able to get a suspect description and broadcast it to other responding units. Officers Cole, Razzak, and Buhagiar spotted a suspect nearby who was attempting to flee the scene. When the Officers stopped the suspect, she confessed to cutting the victim and produced the bloody knife used in the attack. Inspector Cleary responded to the scene and assisted in the investigation and follow-up.
 
Tuesday 11/20/07 Plainclothes Officers Buhagiar and Razzak conducted an operation near UN Plaza. Even though there were only these two Officers available for this operation they were able to conduct a surveillance and witness drug deals taking place. After they observed these drug deals done right in public view they were able to arrest two individuals for narcotic sales and take 18 rocks of heroin off the streets.
 
Wednesday 11/15/07 Officers Maxwell and Perez responded to 11th and Folsom regarding a robbery. The Officers were shocked when they found that the victims in this robbery were a mother and her three small children. The family was waiting at the bus stop on their way to school when the suspect approached and demanded their MUNI fast pass. When the mother attempted to walk away to protect her children the suspect threatened the children and the mother. Thankfully a Good Samaritan intervened and the suspect fled. Officers Maxwell and Perez who were quick to respond to the scene were able to locate and arrest the suspect nearby.
 
Saturday 11/17/07 Officer Maxwell and Sergeant Washington responded to the Denny’s Restaurant located on Mission Street on a robbery that just occurred. Officer Jackson and Sovig were also on scene in time to assist Denny’s employees who were holding down two robbery suspects. After a detailed investigation it turns out that the suspects used a screwdriver to threaten the life of employee who was manning the cash register. The suspects threatened the life of the employee and then took off with the cash from the register. When other Denny’s employees heard the commotion the chase was on. The employees caught up with the suspects about a block away where one of the suspects cut an employee with the screwdriver.   The Officer’s responded quickly and took charge of the chaotic scene. All of the stolen money was recovered and returned to the restaurant. Sergeant Jamierana from the robbery detail also responded and assisted in this investigation.
 
Saturday 11/17/07 Sergeant Espinoza just heard the broadcast of vehicle fleeing the scene of a shooting. He was in the area of Folsom and Dore when he saw a vehicle that matched the description of this fleeing vehicle. Sergeant Espinoza, Officers Lee, and Young performed a traffic stop of this vehicle and detained the driver who had a long history of violence and gun related charges. The Officers searched the vehicle and found a loaded handgun in the front passenger compartment. It turns out that this handgun was reported stolen in a burglary in Vacaville. This investigation is still on-going but it’s safe to say that another handgun was taken off the streets by these brave and hardworking officers.

If you are transporting by car, transport the firearm in the trunk of the car.

The San Francisco Police Department, in partnership with the Controller’s Office, is contracting with Public Safety Strategies Group and the Police Executive Research Forum to conduct three planning studies: 1) Foot Patrol Pilot Program Evaluation and 2) District Station Boundaries Analysis. These two studies are part of the Police Effectiveness Review.
            Community input is an integral component of these studies and will inform the recommendations provided to the City. From September 11th through September 24th, Public Strategies Group (PSSG) attended 35 community meetings across the City to discuss police district station boundaries and foot patrols. Outreach is continuing with the use of online, paper, and telephone survey. The online survey can be found at www.sfpolicereview.org under the What’s New section. CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST POSITION – EMPHASIS ON CHILD, YOUTH AND FAMILY SAFETY
 
SAFE (safety Awareness for everyone) is a non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation that provides crime prevention education and public safety services citywide, such as Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch groups, Personal Safety presentations to all groups, and organizes community policing activities and events. The Crime Prevention Specialist is responsible for the above duties, and coordinates and implements crime prevention programs and projects with a focus on child , youth and family safety. You will be working with diverse communities on leadership development, and strategizing and problem-solving on issues of crime and public safety in neighborhoods citywide. Day Watch Sgt. Christie is the Graffiti Abatement coordinator.  Each month he collects surveys from the various beat officers to report graffiti to DPW and our own Graffiti Unit within the police department.  You can contact Sgt.Christie at  (415) 553-1373.
 
311 Customer Service Center:
What is 311? 311 is a toll free, NON-EMERGENCY  phone number that the public can call to access information about government services. A live customer service representative will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. The service is available to both wired and wireless customers. Wireless customers should call (415) 701-2311. 311 employees will be able to provide translations services in more than 145 languages and dialects and will employ a diverse staff of customer service representatives. Additionally, 311 is set up to accept calls form the hearing impaired by utilizing a TTY System.
 
Cell phone 911:
How does 911 work on cell phones in San Francisco?
If you are on surface streets in San Francisco and dial 911, your call will be answered by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management Services. Once the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management Services determine what emergency services are needed, they will then route your 911 call to the San Francisco Police Department or the San Francisco Fire Department, including ambulance service.
 
If you are on a freeway in San Francisco and dial 911, your call will be answered by either by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management Services or the California Highway Patrol Dispatch Center. Regardless, your 911 call will be routed to the proper emergency agency, the San Francisco Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, or the San Francisco Fire Department, including ambulance service.
