It appears public servers are dead yet again. It would be good if there
was a file to edit that doesn't point to whatismyip.org, but some other
IP-based service, such as
http://iplookup.flashfxp.com

which does exactly the same thing.
I don't suppose such a file exists or anything, does it? That would of
course be too easy.

Sure, that's a good one. And you could also write a script on your own
server that does the same, because the normal php getip function gets
my proxy ip lol

Thanks for the report. I wouldn't have noticed without it because
whatismyip.org is working.

The first versions of SoundRTS already guessed the IP address of the
servers using a PHP function. Unfortunately, in some rare cases, the
returned IP address was wrong, and that's why I had to use a web site
like whatismyip.org instead.

Adding this kind of URL in an editable text file might be the thing to
do, or using automatically a PHP script hosted by the metaserver if
whatismyip.org fails.

This reminds me of another serious potential problem. Since the source
code of SoundRTS is not available, I should make sure that if the
metaserver disappeared, it would still be possible for anybody to
define and package a new client that would use another metaserver. I
would include the metaserver files in the usual package. The current
metaserver requires PHP and SQL.

That being said, if you could make it not use sql, I could run it from my
home machine on Apache. I'm the one running the quote unquote, 'a public
server' at all times, because it's running on a box that's primary purpose
is to be a server. Runs my mail, ftp, http, irc, dc, sound RTs and some
others, so having the command window always showing up in the task bar
doesn't bother me, because I don't actually use that machine.
If the metaserver has to run SQL, I could stick it on the Sound RTs mirror,
which is of course tbrn.net. I'm sure I could persuade my I.T guy to do
it.
This is a community and we should all try to help each other out as and
when necessary. This is my small contribution to this community, where
possible.

I be willing to run it as well, since I have two servers running non stop on
battery back up as well.

Thanks for your offers and for your current help with the public servers.
About the metaserver, SQL brings reliability when several servers
register at the same time. Anyway, there is no reason to move the
metaserver to another host as long as it works. I will just make sure
that you can install a new one if it goes down, or even program
another metaserver (this part of the code is actually very small and
simple).
