Simon Scott is a British sound artist and multi-instrumentalist who is currently based in Cambridge, UK. Below Sea Level is Scott’s third album, released in May 2012, and is his debut release for 12k. The aesthetics of active listening and the subjective distinction of compositional materials and sound timbres are predominant explorations in his work. His music is a fusion of digital signal manipulation, micro-melodies and minimalism combined with environmental sounds and organic acoustic textures. He is inspired by his interests in sound ecology, music technology, digital media, illustration, composition and sonic art.
Since the late 1990’s Scott’s work has been featured in a variety of international films, art exhibitions, dance productions and digital multi-media projects. He has toured worldwide since 1988 (he was the drummer for Slowdive between 1990 and 1994, who worked with Brian Eno on the Souvlaki album), and his track “For Martha” was included on the respected German label Kompakt’s Pop Ambient 2012 compilation series. His music has been previously released on Morr Music, Miasmah, Slaapwel, Sonic Pieces, Secret Furry Hole, Ghostly International and other respected international recording labels.

We are delighted and excited to give exposure to Simon Scott and his latest album “Below Sea Level”, released on the 12k label. His interests in sound ecology, the aestetics of listening and illustration works are ever-present in his art. The Wire Magazine gives us reference: “Scott is particularly adept at layering coolly shimmering guitars and dark churning currents of noise into something vast.”  Stand-out album. Huge recommendation.

BSL

Below Sea Level is the first 12k release from seasoned musician and electronic sound artist Simon Scott. The inspiration behind Below Sea Level, including its music, title, artwork and photography (see accompanying journal) originally derives from Scott’s desire to musically explore the desolate and controversial environment of the Fens in East Anglia, UK. The memories Scott has of visiting this area as a child make this a poignant and highly personal project that explores nostalgic familiarity with a desire to capture the musicality of the landscape. For two years Scott ventured into this former wetland with hydrophones and self-built recording devices to explore the land that is cartographically below mean sea level, trace the devastating history of this environment caused by the drainage of the land, and arrange it into conceptual musical and visual project.

The aforementioned journal is an 80-page color, 13X20cm, hardcover book that includes Scott’s essay entitled An Exploration of the Subterranean Fenland Environment, many pages of hand-written notes and sketches and a section of photography from the area. Each copy of the book will come with a unique ink sketch from Scott as well as a download code for the album and a bonus 30-minute live recording. It is a beautiful and essential look at the process and thoughts behind Scott’s passionate and in-depth work on this subject.
