Dear all,

I'm looking for texts about the history of car audio. I'm particularly interested in trunk sound systems that can reproduce low frequencies (20-60Hz).

Also, I need references of texts discussing car culture in relation to specific music styles (Miami bass, reggaeton, etc.).

Best,

hi leonardo...

if i remember correctly, both julian henriques' 'sonic bodies' as well as brandon labelle's 'acoustic territories' talk about car sound-system culture.

cheers...

michael

Ben Chappell has a book on lowriders and car culture that will likely be of interest:

Hi Leonardo,

Charissa Terranova has a forthcoming book from the UTPress titled Automotive Prosthetic: Technological Mediation and the Car in Conceptual Art. Although the book may only be tangentially related to car audio (I haven't seen a Table of Contents or Index yet), I know she's done some research in Jack Burnham's concept of "system esthetics' and the phenomenology of listening in the car - both of which apply to your topic. She's very approachable, very near you (at UT-Dallas), and could probably point you toward some interesting sources.

Here is her contact information via UT-Dallas: http://www.utdallas.edu/ah/people/faculty_detail.php?faculty_id=1161

Best,
Michael

Perhaps the obvious reference, but just in case, Michael Bull's work would seem to fit somewhere in here.

Specifically:

Bull, Michael. "Automobility and the power of sound." Theory, Culture & Society 21.4-5 (2004): 243-259.
Bull, Michael. "Soundscapes of the Car." M. Bull L. Back (Eds.); The Auditory Culture Reader (2003): 357-374.

Hi all:

I'm collecting these for our bibliography, so keep these coming. I'm including some of the text about the books (some from the publishers) so links are welcome.

Happy holiday weekend from your tech czar,

Meryl

A reference on the discussion of hip hop:

Adrienne Brown's 2012 "Drive Slow: Rehearing Hip Hop Automotivity" the Journal  of Popular Music Studies might be useful.

All best, Meryl
