Hi all-

I'm working on a dissertation chapter about designing the sonic space of automobiles, and aside from the work of Michael Bull and Brandon LaBelle, I'm not finding much on this topic. If anyone knows of research that deals with sound/listening, cars, and design (or research that seems related), I'd really appreciate it if you would share the citations.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Steph:

Check out Karin Bijsterveld's "Acoustic Cocooning: How the Car became a Place to Unwind," The Senses and Society, Volume 5, Number 2, July 2010 , pp. 189-211(23)

Jody Berland at York University in Toronto wrote an article regarding
"Third Space" that you might interest you. I can't remember the name
of the article at the moment but will try and source it for you.
Actually, I think it may have been a book chapter. Will check my
files...

Hi Steph.

J.D. Connor gave a paper entitled "Listening to Carchitecture" at The Sound of Architecture symposium at Yale University earlier this month.

He argued the importance of considering car company advertising campaigns when examining the ideologies governing acoustic design for the automobile.  I don't know if he has published related work, but you can find him at Yale:

The essay by Berland is called "Locating Listening" and it can be
found in her collection of essays entitled North of Empire. Good luck!
