Larry, I just bought a GH1. Contact me off-list if you have any questions. FYI, don't forget to change the subject line when you change topics.

Hi Group,

I have a great little hd camcorder and a pro still camera I am selling. Is it appropriate to put the information in an email to the group or not. If not, where can I list the details?

Also, is anyone in the group shooting with the new Panasonic GH1 dslr video camera?

Thanks!

Larry

¡Felicitaciones René!
Did you buy the USA version or the European version of the GH1?

I got a great deal on a U.S. NTSC store demo model from B&H. They had taken excellent care of it, not a single fingerprint or scratch on it!! They also threw in a SD card (maybe by accident since it was sitting inside the camera).

$1,199, with a new camera warranty. So far it's a beautiful thing. I also purchased a Nikon to micro four thirds lens adapter from Fotodiox (through Amazon.com) that permits me to use Nikon lenses. I'm currently using a 50 mm f1.8 Nikon "normal" lens on it (on this camera it's the equivalent of a 100 mm lens).

On a slightly sour note, Panasonic's firmware (as of version 1.1) somehow prevents the use of third party batteries (I experienced it first hand), so if you need extras then you HAVE to buy Panasonic.

Congrats again René. Everything I've read and seen about this particular camera is that the best mode to shoot (regardless of the desired end result) is in 720p59.94. If that's what you wanted anyway, great. If you wanted slo-mo, then use that footage as slo-mo on a 29.976p timeline. If you wanted 23.976p with normal motion, extract the 23.976 frames from the original 59.94p. There are more advantages of doing it that way than may be immediately apparent. You are probably aware of those methods and advantages, but if not, I can spell them out for you or anyone else.

I've been shooting in both 720p 59.94 and 1080i (24p sensor output over 59.94i stream). After shooting in the latter format I've used JES Deinterlacer to remove pulldown and convert the footage to 23.976 p. When shooting 720p and ingesting via Log and Transfer in FCP I've dropped the footage into a 23.98p Prores timeline. That seems to work well too. I've also done some reading about Neoscene and its interpolation capability from the original 4:2:0 colorspace to 4:2:2. I'm not sure it's worth the $120 bucks just yet.

The GH1's recording 23.976p over 59.94i has at least four disadvantages to my knowledge:

  • Waste of bandwidth. The "real" frames get compressed more for no good reason, since they share bandwidth with the "filler" frames.
  • 4:2:0 combined with interlacing exaggerates artifacts, kind of like combining baking soda with vinegar.
  • You have to extract later using another tool.
  • The cadence is not as accurate.

I don't know if you have noticed all of them or not.
At least if you shoot 720p59.94, some of those disadvantages go away, and the same footage can be used different ways.

The artifacting is more obvious with faster moving subjects or camera moves, less obvious with subtle moves, less movement in your frame, etc. The spatial resolution of 1080 is nice, but the temporal resolution of shooting in 720p 59.94 does indeed give you a cleaner image, cleaner individual frames, and many options for post, not to mention beautiful slow motion when conformed to 23.976p in Cinema Tools (which is instantaneous, no render time). Sometimes, however, you're splitting hairs.

I believe Marion said it is ok to post this to you all by changing the subject line.

So...

I am selling a Canon HF100 hd camcorder. It's a great little camera and shoots on SDHC cards. Works really nicely with Final Cut Pro. Comes with extra bigger battery, UV filter, etc.

I also have a beautiful Canon pro digital (D60) still camera I am selling. Comes with two canon lenses.

Both are in Pristine, like-new condition.

If anyone is interested please send me an email and I will give all the details.

Thanks,

Larry

Ummmm... all I said was for you to start a new thread.

Approvals of posts comes from Marlene Lopez, not me. She's managing
the list now. I realize our names are similar and apologize for any
confusion.

Good luck!
