New Delhi: The headquarters of National Green Tribunal (NGT) is likely
to be located in the national capital and not in Bhopal as announced
earlier by Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh.

The move comes following detailed discussion between officials of the
Law and Environment Ministries after the former felt that New Delhi
would be an ideal site for the tribunal for the convenience of public
seeking redressal of environmental related problems.

Sources in the Law Ministry said the recommendation for setting up the
NGT headquarters in New Delhi is backed by Chief Justice of Supreme
Court S H Kapadia.

"Kapadia too had favoured setting up the office of the first tribunal
meant to fast track cases pertaining to environment in Delhi," the
sources said.

Ramesh had earlier announced that the first tribunal that would be a
network of dedicated courts for environmental issues would be set up
in Bhopal as it would be "a very small tribute to the people who
suffered there (because of the gas leak disaster)."

However, following the Law Ministry's suggestion, the Environment
Ministry is now considering setting up the NGT in the capital.

The tribunal came into existence with the relevant law passed in the
last session of Parliament aiming to expedite the green cases, and is
expected to become operational by this year-end.

It will be headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Lokeshwar
Singh Panta and hear civil cases on environmental complaints.

Those dissatisfied with the judgement of the Tribunal can appeal in
the Supreme Court, reports PTI.
