members of a family - a man and his two young sons - committed suicide
in Sarsa village of Anand district on Monday. They were joined in the
act by another family member, who, however, survived the suicide bid.

Raju Chavda and his two sons - Sambhu, 25, and Dharmesh, 20 - died in
Haveli pole area of Sarsa village after hanging themselves from the
roof of their house. Chavda's sister Prafula, who had also attempted
suicide along with the three, escaped with minor injuries on her
neck.

The family took the extreme step under stress allegedly caused by
harassment from Sambhu's in-laws. The suicide note that the police
recovered from the house said Sambhu was married to Bhavna Sakh, a
native of Dhari in Amreli district in Saurashtra, for many years.
However, Bhavna failed to adjust herself in the joint family and
following some disputes, she left her in-laws' house.

The suicide note claimed that Bhavna's brother Bala had sought Rs 10
lakh from Sambhu on Sunday evening when the latter sought divorce from
his wife. The two brothers worked as tailors in Vasad and the amount
demanded was too big for them.

The suicide note also said that Chavda had submitted an application at
Vasad police station on Sunday night seeking police intervention in
the matter claiming that Sambhu's in-laws had threatened to finish the
family if they failed to give them Rs 10 lakh.

Prafula, who was staying with her brother, has told police that all
four members of the family had decided to end their lives, as they had
no means to pay the money demanded by Sambhu's in-laws. While the four
of them decided to hang them at around 10 am on Monday, Prafula
developed cold feet and started screaming.

However, by the time the neighbours reached their house, three others
had already died. Prafula has been shifted to Karamsad medical
hospital for treatment. Khambolaj police has registered a case of
accidental death and is further investigating the case.
