Yes, as the Hosters are the ones who have the data they are the ones
who would need to control access to that data. Therefore they also
need to be able to authenticate viewers identities.
Having a data standard should stop users being locked in.

Good question. Originally I had the format as the first layer, as I
viewed it as a kind of foundation that brought the other two parts
together. But you could change the word layers for pillars or parts or
something else that doesn't connote superiority of a certain part and

DO you attach any meaning to the ordering here. I suspect the 1-2-3 is
chronological, in that first we had social Web sites, then we had
FOAF, XFN, ... and now we wonder how on earth to visualise all that
data :)

Well yes. that's the movement that Brad Fitzpatrick and David Recordon
kicked off (or started to evangelize) about a year ago. It's still a good
