Hi all,

This evening I received an email from a family foundation in California
confirming that they have made a grant of US$25,000 to support Social
Actions. The grant was designed to help us build out the search
interface and open API as well as to implement an earned income program
by mid-September.

In requesting the support, I made it very clear that we have no
intention of falling into a grant-seeking habit. This is a one time
infusion to help us get the operation off the ground. I will post
details about the funder on Social Actions later this week.

Quoting from the letter: "We hope this contribution will help Social
Actions to leverage the work of existing social
action platforms, enabling greater citizen participation in
micro-philanthropy and ultimately broader social change."

Spring 2008 has been quite a whirlwind experience for me, from the New
York Tech Meetup on March 4 straight through to this news. Now it's
time to hunker down and build something brilliant.

A big thank you to everyone participating (and lurking) on the Google
Group. It's been a huge boost to have a group sounding board for the
project. Also, I want to thank Christine for joining me on the trips to
Stockholm and San Jose, and for being an incredibly supportive collaborator.

All the best,
Peter

is the name of the foundation a secret?  I'm anxious to know who it is...

Congrats Peter, Christine, and everyone else!  And I'm curious about the identity of the foundation, as well...  :-)

Hi all,

In some ways, we have Bill Somerville of Philanthropic Ventures
Foundation to thank for the support. His book "Grassroots Philanthropy:
Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker" was circulating at the Council on
Foundations Conference in early May.

I had reviewed the book on my blog several weeks earlier:
http://blog.socialactions.com/profiles/blog/show?id=2062983%3ABlogPost%3A327

I spotted someone reading Grassroots Philanthropy at the very end of the
conference, and started up a conversation. The conversation led to a
discussion about micro-philanthropy, Social Actions, and this person's
family foundation.

We met again when I was out in the Bay Area for NetSquared. One thing
led to another. And here we are with the much needed infusion of
resources.

I'll be posting a budget for how we can put these resources to use in
the next three months.

The group's name is The Peery Foundation.

All the best,
Peter

Dear Peter,

So, nu? Have you figured out whether you're a nonprofit? I assume
that the answer is yes, since you're eligible to accept grants. Or
have worked out an affiliation with a fiscal sponsor?

Hi Deborah,

Good question. In the last week, I brought our fiscal sponsorship
status up-to-date with Fractured Atlas:
http://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/fiscal/?do=browse_projects&category=Multimedia&letter=S#761

During the summer months, I'll be looking for a longterm fiscal
sponsorship home for Social Actions.

All the best,
Peter

Thanks Fre! It's pretty amazing how a project can go from $0 to $45,000
within a few weeks. Of course, the story actually started 12 months
ago, when you took an interest in what I was doing -- and inspired me to
go for it.

Big hug!
