I'm going to head over to DSL/Broadband reports anyway, but I figured I'd
get more authorative/informative experience here, if there's any users.

Right now I'm paying DSL Extreme (who has been really good with no down-
time and good back-side speeds) $60/mo for 3000/384 DSL and T-Mobile HS
$40/mo (I don't like contracts) for their service. From what I understand,
I can get ATT DSL (and it appears I've pre-qualed in their system) at
6000/X for $35 w/no contract that also gives me an ATT WiFi (i.e., the
same Starbucks I normally inhabit when not using my Sprint 3G).

I can't see any downside, unless y'all have any here, like blocking ports
or content or some *real* objection (if they don't give enough to PETA
or some such I couldn't really care less ...)

Thanks,

-Kenny

I use ATT/SBC dsl now and have used it in the past. I am quite happy
with it. Good performance and decent price.

That is correct. I got incredibly good speeds (almost 10mbps) when I
was about 2 blocks from the central office.
Currently I get 768/384.

I have been attempting to hack it and force a line relearn but as of yet
haven't figured out how to do it.

Haha. No blocking of content or ports. Well they might block inbound
windows ports. Which is fine with me. Less stuff for my Cisco 1841
router to reject. :)

Do you have a static IP address with DSL Extreme? Last I heard,
single static IPs weren't even offered by ATT DSL; 5 was the minimum,
and the cost was high. With DSL Extreme, you can get them singly at
modest cost.

Yeah, I'm seeing that. Not only that, I think they're using PPPoE at ATT.

I have a static Dynamic-DNS name I've had for a while that I can use
via my router (which already does the updating anyway) and since most
of my incoming nowadays is just to get to my SlingBox I think I might
be OK. A few years ago (before getting my office space in the OC) it
would have been a deal-breaker.

We were early adopters of Pacific Bell, then SBC and now AT&T ADSL. I
have a static IP and 1.5 Mb/s down with 384Kb/s and am quite pleased
with it. They offered to increase my data rate for a few extra
bucks/month, but I don't need it. Cheers, Chuck, from Ventura.

I had a few problems when I first signed up with AT&T DSL but since resolution there has been no problem.  Can't say the same for the Charter Cable service we had previously.  After we dropped the cable modem we ended up dropping all of their services.  Now Charter's going door-to-door in our neighborhood (@ 9PM no less) begging for money.

If you do have any problems with their service, I recommend going straight to the AT&T-staffed support forum on DSL reports.  Their phone reps told me in no uncertain terms that I could only get 768k service even when the modem showed symbol-budget for 3 Mbps.  I sent the device stats in to the DSLreports forum and had 3M service within a week.

The free Wi-Fi service at Sbucks, Coffee Bean and the Burbank airport is definitely the 'key differentiator' for me.

I've never paid for CATV.  There was usually more than enough to watch over-the-air & with the advent of DTV, there still is.  I bought one of the converters, hooked it up to my rooftop antenna & picked up more than 40 channels, about a third of which were Spanish.

Thanks for the tip on DSL reports.  I'll go there looking for info on the modem symbol-budget.

I don't use $bucks or Coffee Bean, but I was in BUR waiting for a flight to SFO last Thursday.  Comes in handy.

Cheers, Chuck

I also just installed my DTV converter. I'm very happy with the quality and the big selection of channels.

About a year ago I installed a FTA (Free To Air) receiver which allows reception of un-encrypted satellite stations which includes NASA TV.

I'm not a big TV watcher, but the combo of the DTV, FTA and DVD player, I'm able to watch the few shows that I like without monthly fees.

Turns out it's a moot point; my POTS is from Verizon, and AT&T can't get
(or don't already have) equipment in the CO.

But the ATT WiFi service is $20/mo, no contract, vs. $40/mo (n/c) for
T-Mo, so I might end up cancelling T-Mo (after having been with them
for some 70 mos now).

I have a DMT1050 FTA receiver and an old DirecPC dish which I want to try.  Just a matter of finding the time.  After I got ADSL, I used the dish to watch KU-band analog TV until NBC went digital.  I never liked the concept of paying for TV when I can get it for free.

With a bigger dish, 4 polarization LNB and rotor, you greatly expand what you can see with FTA.

Unfortunately I'm inside a pretty deep canyon with no DTV reception.

That's why Avenue Cable in Ventura got started.
