City vote opens women's restroom doors to men
But people have chance to speak before 'gender identity' move becomes law

The city council of Tampa, Fla., voted unanimously last week to include
"gender identity and expression" as a protected class under the city's human
rights ordinance, leading some to fear the council has opened the city's
public bathroom doors to sexual predators masquerading as protected
transsexuals.
A statement from the American Family Association explained, "Tampa Police
arrested Robert Johnson in February 2008 for hanging out in the locker
room/restroom area at Lifestyle Fitness and watching women in an undressed
state. The City of Tampa's 'gender identity' ordinance could provide a legal
defense to future cases like this if the accused claims that his gender is
female."
The council's decision, which won't be codified as law until a final vote is
taken Thursday night, defines gender identity and expression as
"gender-related identity, appearance, expression or behavior of an
individual, regardless of the individual's assigned sex at birth."
The city's current ordinance forbids discrimination on race, color,
religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, handicap, familial
status or marital status mostly in areas of labor and employment.
But the section that makes it illegal to "segregate any person at a place of
public accommodation, or to segregate any person in regards to . facilities"
leads some to worry about the consequences of forbidding discrimination
"regardless of the individual's sex at birth."
"This ordinance will give lawful protection to cross-dressing males to
patronize women's restrooms," the Florida Family Association said in a
statement. "And men dressed as women or women who perceive themselves as men
can also use men's restrooms."
"The gender identity ordinance also provides legal protection for
transgenders to teach school children one day as a man and another day as a
woman," AFA President Tim Wildmon wrote in an e-mail. "Unfortunately, the
ordinance does not attempt to qualify who really is a transgender and who is
not. That is left up to the individual to determine what his 'gender
identity' is that day."
WND reported on a similar plan adopted by fiat in Montgomery County, Md.,
where opponents feared the law would open up women's locker rooms to men who
say they are women.
The issue also has come up in Colorado, where Democrat Gov. Bill Ritter
signed into law a plan that effectively strikes gender-specific restrooms
across the state.
And city officials in Kalamazoo, Mich., only weeks after adopting a
"perceived gender" bias plan have abandoned it in the face of massive public
opposition.

Hopefully not before they admit that fundamentalists like yourself are
mentally ill. Let's see...on the one hand, a person who prefers to live
their lives as the opposite gender...on the other hand, a person who clings
to the belief that the world is 6000 years old and that it was created by
God just, who also likes to send us all to hell.

More dishonest scaremongering from the religious right.
Meanwhile, supporters of J's point of view are showing themselves to be
*far* more of a threat to women than trans people:
The CVS Pharmacy manager who allegedly admitted Friday to filming women
in his store's bathroom was an active participant in the 2008 charter
amendment to "keep men out of women's restrooms."
Jonathan Matheny, 27, was charged with one count of video voyeurism
after a customer told police she had discovered a cell phone equipped
with a camera under a pile of tissues in the CVS bathroom at 125 S.W.
34th St.
Police are looking for other victims.
The petition drive in the summer of 2008 was aimed at a city ordinance
that provided rights, including equal access to public accommodation,
for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.
Matheny signed the petition, according to records with the Alachua
County Supervisor of Elections Office, and opponents of the charter
amendment say they received reports that Matheny allowed the petitions
to be distributed and signed at his store. Those behind the drive said
the amendment was essential to prevent men from using the
public-accommodation portion of the law to enter women's restrooms and
film, rape or otherwise prey on the opposite sex.
"It's a bit hypocritical when that group was allegedly putting the
petition on the ballot to protect women in bathrooms and then the
manager of the store who was allowing the petition gathering was in fact
preying on women in bathrooms," said Terry Fleming, spokesman for
Equality in Gainesville's Businesses, the political action committee
created to oppose the charter amendment. The amendment was defeated by
voters.
The group behind the petition drive, Citizens for Good Public Policy,
could not be reached for comment.
Police have seized a laptop and a desktop computer from Matheny's home
off Northwest 68th Avenue, Lt. Will Halvosa said.
Officers are trying to see if Matheny uploaded pictures of women taken
in the store bathroom and posted them online or if he visited Web sites
that feature voyeuristic images. Police came across the sites during an
investigation of a similar case earlier this year in which a man, seen
on a Gainesville store's surveillance video, entered a restroom behind a
woman, who said he was holding up a cell phone to take pictures.
"He did it only to females for his own personal gratification," Halvosa
said about what Matheny told officers. But police need to verify that no
pictures or videos were taken anywhere else or posted by Matheny.
Police said Matheny has no prior criminal history. But Halvosa said, "He
claims he's been doing this for months."
The Police Department reported Sunday that Matheny said he had filmed
about 50 women during the past six months. Police have since received
phone calls from other women concerned they might have been photographed
in the store restroom.
The 28-year-old Gainesville woman who found the phone initially reported
the matter to store management, police said. That was Matheny. "The
victim confronted him about it. He admitted he placed it there," Halvosa
said. The woman then took her complaint to police.
Anyone with information about this case or who thinks they might be a
victim can contact police at 334-2470.

Society, like water, needs to move and change to remain fresh. To keep
it from doing so is to allow it to become stagnant and malodorous. The
religious right would have us all living in a swamp to assuage their own
fears.

I walked in on a tranny in the men's room once, and survived the
experience. And in Europe it seems to be perfectly acceptable for
female janitors to be working in the men's room while men are
urinating, though I don't know whether male janitors are allowed in
the ladies' room.

Of course you would; "Birds Of A Feather".
In Japan both men and women piss on the street. Perhaps we should go
that way and keep everyone safe from predation <SNIGGER>

Why not? Urine is generally sterile, and thus a lot safer than (say)
spit.

For years trannies have been using the women's restrooms in gay bars
and dance venues without much excitement. And in the USA heterosexual
perverts who want to film or photograph females in restrooms have been
doing so without resorting to dress up as trannies.
You know that is an interesting statement. I have been to Japan
several times and I have yet to see this happen. Perhaps you dreamt
this gobbet of information.
Don't ever go to Europe, IBen. Most of the restrooms there are
unisex, and always have been.
